I love this bit of diplomacy from Thor, simultaneously stating that the Asgard’s friendship with Earth would continue regardless of who was running the Stargate Program, while also stating the displeasure of the Asgard High Council should General Hammond and SG1 be removed from the picture. In short, big brother popped in and made it very clear which younger sibling they liked hanging out with.

I love the big dick energy Thor brought to the discussion. The fact that he mentions the high council of the Asgard, shows how much pull Thor has himself. He was still a Colonel, and the Russian ship was not even finished yet fully. And the actor did not know he "died" till the next season opener script came out. He was asked at a convention between seasons if his ship blew up. He said how could it have been his ship when the last time we see him, we see Daniel Jackson a main character next to him on his bridge. Well the first few scenes of the next season had Jackson jumping into a ring transporter off the ship before it blew.

@@JoshSweetvale What do you mean? Most countries I can think of have the military answer to the world leader of that country, regardless of whether or not that leader holds a formal military rank. I'm pretty sure Winston Churchill and FDR made most of the major military decisions for their respective countries during WW2. Thor's title is formally "Supreme Commander of the Asgard Fleet". That sounds more like a military rank than a political title. And the Asgard governing body is a High Council. I would expect their top political leader to be titled something like "Supreme Chancellor" or similar. Thor's position in the Asgard political system is vague. We know he's well respected, quite high up the chain of command, and often speaks on behalf of his people, but that doesn't mean he's their leader. Some of this is admittedly inferred from the scene where O'Neill addresses the partially assembled High Council (sans Thor) and someone else seems to be sitting in the big central seat. And I couldn't help but notice that the Asgard in the biggest chair was wearing an object on his chest like a pendant. The stand-out nature of the pendant and the biggest chair in the middle usually signals "this is the guy in charge".

No need for such detail. I'm pretty much sure, everyone in the room realized that. An advanced alien just calls himself Thor after the ancient Norse god of thunder?. Ronny Cox may be type cast as the villain or antagonist most of the time. But he just plays the part so damned well. His on-screen personas are always the type of guy you love to hate. He's shown some range in that narrow role too. In Beverly Hills Cop, he had a procedural stick up his ass. In Robocop, he played corrupt Executive. In Stargate, he played a greasy corrupt politician. In Star Trek, he played a technocrat captain to antagonize the crew.

@@bahti472 It was Edward Jellico, and I didn't say he was the villain. I said he was an antagonistic technocrat. A military officer brought in for his experience in dealing with the Cardassians. You're right that he did avert a possible war, secured Picard's rescue, and verbally bitch slapped the Cardassian commander. You're also right that Riker's ego was the true villain of the episode. But, to be fair, at least one of Jellico's orders was unreasonable. Demanding Engineering work around the clock to complete some modifications was tough, but reasonable given the circumstances. @@DarkLordDiablos Thor responds to general Hammond thanking him for coming and also quotes O'Neill's suggestion about senator Kinsey, both indicate each version, I guess it's the later but on the order of the former. Thor being Thor just knows, how things are, so he responded to Hammond's thanks as he did.

I must give appreciation to Ronny Cox. Obstinate bureaucrat or sinister bad guy, or hard nosed boss he is intense and you can always see from his point of view he is doing what must be done to make sure the ends are met. Regardless of the cost or means.
@danieldickson8591
@danieldickson8591 Жыл бұрын
The ends to be met always included his own benefit, though. As an example, Kinsey was concerned for American security (with Earth's as a whole coming second), but at the same time he always angled for his own personal advancement.

Cox is a truly great actor. When he plays villains, they're always very human rather than caricatures. You can understand Kinsey's motivations, they're just not born from 'this is the bad guy. He does bad things because'. I particularly liked him as Captain Jellico in the Next Generation because while he's much more authoritarian than Picard; he's not actually a tyrant as some paint him. He's just a tough commander with high standards who shakes up a crew that's enjoyed an excess of informality for a long time. He's also very good at what he does.

The scene is best described with: When month or years of work and hidden missions been negotiated within seconds and you cant do anything about it. The way Thor and Hammond talks to each other is so cool. And Thors statement from the High Asgard Council, that says: we are friends - if he is in command - if not we are friends too, but... ah you will figure it out. you will make the right descision. But we will not lead you in this. Thor is just here to install our weapons and shields at your ship(s). One of the very best scenes in SG1

Although this was a bottle episode, (mostly taking place in one room with only a few extras with very little special effects and reusing footage where possible, usually done to save the money for other episodes) I like it a lot. It was nice to have a form of "looking back" episode that also had a very big importance within the storyline.
