One of the coolest one-offs in SG1. However, I think the moral of the episode is more complicated than "Tech bad". The people in this episode claim to have rejected the destructive ways that ruined their world, and yet they are totally dependent on their little, self-contained technological bubble. Rather than confront the myriad decisions that brought their world to ruin or try to repair the damage they've done to the environment, they use technology to ignore the problem for as long as possible. So when the bubble starts eliminating people, it's really just doing what they've told it to do; solve their problems for them without burdening them with the responsibility of making hard choices.

Just like in I robot the Ai was doing exactly what is was told to do.
@SioxerNikita Жыл бұрын
@@dmclegg66 It is quite significantly different. The AI in "I, Robot" specifically said it rewrote its protocols to allow for what it was told to. The AI here quite literally does what it is supposed to. Preserve as much life as possible while being non-disruptive, while keeping the citizens happy. If they left, it couldn't preserve their life. It would break its protocol, and it would lose its purpose. The AI from "I, Robot" would certainly allow the citizens to leave, since it runs on the basic premise that it want to preserve as much human life as possible. This one is never implied to have rewritten its protocols. It is merely doing what it is told.

Machines/computers lying to preserve/carry out prime commands is an old trope, but a good one. The machines that act this way in these tales are simply doing their best with the tools and programming they have. I always find this scenario interesting and tragic.

In that particular episode, the crew of the Enterprise encounters a culture that settles conflicts with a planetary adversary through computer simulations.
