In this video Jafffa Adventures purchases Starlink RV Satellite internet service. Starlink RV is a mobile satellite internet service with full coverage throughout the country. In this video we unbox the system, set it up, speed test it, and install it in my Toyota Landcruiser 200 series 4WD.
Having had it now for a month or so I am very happy with the purchase. It connects quickly, performs well, and allows me to have an internet service while completely off grid.
Is Starlink RV for you, check this video out to help make that determination.

Another excellent and comprehensive review. 👏 Friends who just started their lap of Australia also bought the Starlink system. And I have to admit, I was impressed with the quality & feel of the unit, and the speeds they were getting, faster than my NBN at home. Though like you, this was while on the East coast of Australia (Central Coast). If Starlink's claim coverage is true, this will be a distrupter to the satellite phone market. A definite alternative to Sat-phones. Other than size or form factor, the Starlink system has total advantage over sat-phones. But I'm comflicted with Starlink. On one hand, I like what it has done, it has made it easy connecting to the internet in remote areas. On the other, I am not a fan of them polluting Earth's low orbit space with 1000s of tiny satellites. But there is no denying the advnatages Starlink brings.

I agree, we are certainly sitting on a potential disrupter to the satellite phone, but I don’t think it is quite there yet. What I mean by that is in an emergency situation, my satellite phone is my go to option. Turn it on, hit three buttons and your connected to emergency services. It takes a lot longer to set up Starlink, and if your emergency is your car burnt down in the middle of nowhere from spinifex seeds around your exhaust, Starlink goes up with the car. My satellite phone is in my bug out bag, which I grab first off when I exit the vehicle in an emergency. Re the space pollution, I wonder if Musk had to agree to ditch and burn the satellites into the atmosphere should they reach the end of their service life. I don’t know anything about the subject, but it seems a sensible option to allow the use of space should any one body govern it🧐. Thanks for watching mate👍😎
@HammerRocks
@HammerRocks Жыл бұрын
@@JafffaAdventures I agree. For emergencies, the sat-phone is definitely still the best device to use - particularly if you lose the vehicle. But more than likely it (sat-phone) will be relegated more to the "grab bag", along with the PLB and other emergency items, and less for day-to-day use as comms. For that the Starlink system is so much better. Fingers crossed with economies of scale, the monthly charge will get cheaper.

It seems the Starlink is taking off lately. More and more people I know that love to venture out in remote areas have started moving into Starlink. Ditching their satellite phones, and instead using Wi-Fi calling. And it's very nice of you to hand out merch. Good onya. 👍

Thank you mate, giving away free merchandise is the least I can do for good people that follow my channel. You had better make sure you head over to the West via us in S.A. or Speedweek in the Gawler Rangers next month which (unfortunately will probably be before you go) as I I'd love a tee, a stubby holder, or better still just to meet you guys! Hi Terry, another information vid. The Starlink unit price is very reasonable, but the monthly fees aren't cheap, but if you need guaranteed internet, Starlink is definitely the way to go. The cost may drop with more units sold. For the camper/ caravaner, 12 volt would have been a better option, saving the use of an inverter and small voltage use . The base of the unit certainly is very bulky ,frabricating a folding base made from aluminium certainly would save space and weight. The tubing connected to head would have been good if it was manufactured with a hinge joint to allow the tube to fold parallel to the head... p.s. will be looking out for you both in W.A. June/ September

As always Terry another great video. One quick question, do you think that Starlink negate the need for a satellite phone, as you have both? If you had neither would you get both or would you go for the more versatile Satlink, but somewhat more cumbersome? Take care 👍
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words Andrew, I sincerely appreciate it. In my opinion Starlink will not and cannot take the place of a Sat phone and/or EPIRB for remote travel. Starlink is tethered to your vehicle, and powered from your vehicle. There are two very real scenarios where you could find yourself in big big trouble if you relied on Starlink for an emergency. One, a vehicle fire say on a remote track like the CRS. Your car burns to the ground, your left standing with the shirt on your back and your only means of comms is a melted pile of goo. Two, you’re travelling along a remote beach below the high tide line. You get bogged, the tide comes in and swamps your vehicle. Your left standing with the shirt on your back and your only means of powering your emergency comms device is under a metre of water. For our style of travel and in those two scenarios, the Sat phone is our first go to device in an emergency. Should that not work (flat battery, the emergency is in an area where you cannot get clear line of sight of the satellite etc.), I would active the EPIRB. For overlanders that travel in a group or never leave the bitumen, Starlink might suit just fine on its own. I have an entire video dedicated to this very subject that will be released on March 8th. Cheers👍😎

@@JafffaAdventures Thanks Terry, that backs up and consolidates the realities of the various situations. I look forward to your video on the subject, which I will pass to the other members of the club, many of whom think even carrying a satphone is over-kill. I treat your advice with a great deal of respect, because it just makes good common sense and cuts straight to the point without all the BS. Thanks again sir. 👍 avagreatday.
