Very impressive! The motor's condition is excellent. The technology is also very good, especially for its time. And those guys really make it look easy - so they must really know their stuff!

Those are compression releases. Diesel engines have very high cylinder pressure and thus take a lot of "oomph" to roll the engine over when starting. Opening those valves up top bleeds off some of this pressure so the engine is easier to start. Notice the gentleman's hand pop up from air pressure at 1:57 when he opens a valve to see to check compression. I can easily how Johann from Das Boot would fall in love with a piece of equipment like this.

checking the burn in each cilinder. If one cilinder isn't giving as much power it will sound differently from the others the pressure reached inside will not be as high.

Fascinating. Did I get this right - used a wind up spring to start?

John Horvath - No John. He was likely pumping a pre-lube pump. This one has a generator that could be wired for electric start. I have an old Enterprise diesel about that size, it has individual air start valves in each cylinder. The snifter valves on top are opened and the engine rolled over a minimum of two revolutions to insure no cooling water has leaked into the cylinder or a rod could be bent on starting. Humorously, the museum engine is being religiously checked and tested to death. I hope they are loading it when they run it and using low ash oil to avoid carbon buildup behind the rings. It's nice to see a good trained crew operating it. Cheers!

Haffschlappe Was ist der Zusammenhang zwischen U-Boot-Motor and Marmelade? Wird die Marmelade als Brennstoff oder Schmieröl benutzt?
@Schlipperschlopper7 жыл бұрын
