This is what happens when you put Neil in the same room as someone smarter than him. He normally surrounds himself with people who know less than him about a topic so he can promote himself as the all-knowing scientist. With someone who knows more he will do his best to not let their brilliance shine through.

that's where Tyson (a charismatic actor who plays a scientist on tv/radio) comes in. He's appealing because he makes regular folk think they understand shit. I watched his fake ass "debate" "simulation theory" for 2 hours for the Issac Asimov memorial without once pointing out that the Planck legnth is the resolution limit of the simulation that we live in. A P-legnth is a pixel. Yep. elon musk is an actor too. In all his simulation bs he's never said anything noteworthy. Just that the odds support it.

William Faulkner, I just need to say if you do not enjoy the math concepts behind the physics, you like pondering and psuedo-science and not the actual physics. There is no such thing a cryptic math, all math is driven by principles and rules, which is why it is universal (which is why economics is not that different than astrophysics). It is not fair or correct to simply say the math formulas is cryptic because you have not learned the concepts, such as integral calculus, trigonometry, etc. That is akin to saying Chinese is cryptic, when in reality it is understood by those who take the time to learn it.

Physics a a very mathematically minded subject, perhaps it's hard for the average person to understand what Matt is saying because he's describing mathematical concepts into words. In addition to what you said, you cannot be sure if he was dumbfounded as you would suggest because he didn't even have an opportunity to fully finish what he was trying to get across. All of what he says is both understandable and physically sound to me.

Hey Matt O'Dowd, next time you meet Neill deGrasse, I ask you to do 3 things: 1) Kindly ask him to let you the time to cover a topic. If you really try to teach, interruptions do not help. 2) Explain that our geometric causality would not allow us to see all the past or the future of our universe if we entered into a black hole. You did it very well during your lessons on PBS Spacetime. 3) point out that the size of a creature also depends on the gravity of the planet in which it develops, from the nutritional value of the food, etc. In planets with foods with low nutritional values and low gravity there may be animals higher than our highest building. Matt and Neil are two great science communicators. This potpourri would have been perfect if only Neil deGrasse had allowed Matt to take his space. However, it always makes me feel good to listen them.

I too am an overly-polite, soft-spoken guy, so I have been training myself to do the following: While speaking, and someone starts to interrupt, I will raise my voice only slightly but otherwise not change my tone or cadence. I will interrupt myself to say, "I am going to continue speaking as if I were not being interrupted." I will then do exactly that. I will carry on saying what I intended to (raising voice some more - without shouting or showing any indication of annoyance - if the interruptions from the other person did not cease). And here is the very important part: Do not acknowledge the interruption in any further way. Most people will try to apologize for interrupting - ironically interrupting you again to make the apology. Ignore it. Do not allow the other person any chance to make the incident about themselves. That will only encourage more interruptions in the future, because the apology somehow made it okay. Don't let bullies bully you. Hit back hard, immediately, as soon as they try and don't allow any further rudeness. Stop it forever.

I'm one of those guys who hates when comments are made before a video is finished - especially if it's to argue a point that the commenter failed to wait long enough for an answer to be discussed But "Crocodiles are the worst bird" is the hardest I've genuinely laughed in as long as I can remember

Predominantly I took great interest in this video. There was a wonderful chemistry between the three participants and the things they talked about were things I pay attention to. Mr. Tyson along with Brian Greene are at this time my two favorite physicists to listen to. They almost never bore me with anything they cover.

It would seem like Tyson has a "routine" where he uses the same types of examples and short summary's of different topics. That are presented in a way that is easy to digest for anyone, after you have watch him on youtube for a couple of hours he loops back and repeats himself. A way of selling himself as a celebrity, with small packages of chewing gum science. Never diving into the grit of things.

Wow such much narcissistic behavior in this video it could be educational material for psychology students. Forgetting the name of Matt's show, interrupting him over and over and touching him constantly. Neil a smart guy but quite unpleasant. Matt handled it well.

I love hearing each of these gentlemen speak. I believe each of these gentlemen respect each other’s intelligence. But gosh I wish there could be more deference when it comes to allowing a peer, to finish their thought before interrupting. Not pointing fingers, hell nobody cares what I think anyway. But sometimes you gotta put aside your need to present new information, in favor of allowing for the fair progression of a conversation. When you have that impulse to add information, wether additive, debate or otherwise, just log it and come back to it when your peer has finished their own thought. We love when all of you banter together. We revel in hearing ALL of you talk, not JUST the smartest man in the room.
