On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with Anthony Daniels, the man behind one of the most iconic characters in film history - C-3PO. Anthony (as C-3PO) is the only person to appear in all nine Star Wars films spanning multiple decades and you’ll hear about his time involved in the biggest movie franchise on Earth. In-studio, Neil is joined by comic co-host Chuck Nice and robot ethicist Kate Darling, PhD, to explore C-3PO’s cultural impact and the rise of robotics in our society.
Kate investigates “human-robot interaction from a social, legal, and ethical perspective” so she is just the person we want for this conversation. We start with a simple question - what makes C-3PO so likeable? Find out why C-3PO’s appeal stems directly from his humanity. Anthony tells us why he wasn’t really a fan of science fiction before he took the part of C-3PO. You’ll learn about the development of C-3PO and why his subtle asymmetrical design brings his “humanity” to the forefront.
We explore how robots have evolved since the beginning of robotics. We breakdown the differences between androids and robots. Find out more about the “uncanny valley.” We ponder the concept of the “soul.” Kate enlightens us to what our interactions with robots tell us about our personalities. Can you create strong bonds with a robot? Should our laws protect robots?
We investigate how film’s portrayal of artificial intelligence has created unnecessary fear of robotic advancements. We also explore the flaws still found in today’s cutting edge technology. Lastly, we ponder how robots will be introduced into more shared spaces like grocery stores, cafes, etc. All that, plus, Kate tells us what the biggest dilemma will be as robotics continue to advance.

I really, really enjoyed this video as a white dude who used to program(now retired) I found the sink bias particularly interesting & have to admit I probably would have been guilty of not thinking of testing for other ethnic groups, I agree the solution is to hire more diverse ethnic groups, but, in the short term, this potential bias should be taught in computer courses so that students become aware of this potential problem & they can at least ask the question in the design phase & hopefully avoid future mistakes...

Excellent topic and interview! The discussion reminded me of an anime called "Ergo Proxy", which seems to have a similar theme to Westworld (can't say that I had heard about Westworld before this video, and had to look up the plot summary). The only complaint I have is to let your guest have a minute to think when you ask those difficult questions (or prep them ahead of time). I shall look forward to hearing from Mrs. Darling again!

I wanted to share with you, not sure if you will see/read this, but here goes. First, I love Anthony Daniels, as well as all of the original Star Wars cast, so I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, thankyou for sharing. Second, during your discussion, there was something that really struck a chord with me, when it was mentioned about the Boston Dynamics robot, Spot being abused. I do have feelings for machinery. I used to believe cars have souls. But I have worked on so many, and having worked in manufacturing I can see how shapeless pieces of metal become a construct, and now I know there is not a soul in a machine. But, I still look at these as having lots of human time and skill invested in their construction. Whenever I look at the willfull destruction of something, like an I phone being set on fire or a car being smashed, I look upon it as a waste of that time and resources, and an insult to the people that worked on it. I watch You Tube videos of people that take old toys, some that I played with, and they put a lot of love and care into restoring them, sometimes better than new, and that brings tears of nostalgia to my eyes. You also brought up another point as to the ethics of that action, kicking Spot, and how it could be a precursor to advise/violence in the home. So I bring an expansion of this to the table. How does that compare to playing a video game and shooting characters on the screen? The problem with video games, is that kids play them, and that desensitizes them to violence. Would the abuse of a robot bring a physical aspect to that desensitization? There were so many places for this subject to go and an hour just wasn't enough time. BTW Niel, I'm a big fan, I love your work, and I look up whenever I can.

To answer Neil's earlier question of "Does C3PO ever imply he is actually a robot?" Yes. He does. Star Wars episode 5. When Luke and Owen go shopping at the Jawa market, Owen asks C3PO "You. I suppose you're programmed for etiquette and protocol?" and C3PO responds "Protocol? Why. It's my primary function sir." and they go back and forth for a bit about his usefulness. It is implied during that dialogue that C3PO is a droid and he asserts his usefulness as a programmed droid with multiple languages under his belt, etc. So yes. He does imply that he is a robot. There are other moments as well of course. If you include episode 1 where you see his body without the plating. You can see all the wires and such sticking out of his body. He also greets Padme and Anakin with "Hello. I am C3PO. Human cyborg..." you get the point.

Dr. Darling is a wonderful guest. I look forward to her returning. One topic I would have liked to have seen discussed is an idea proposed in quite a bit of science fiction: the enslavement of sentient AI. Star Trek addressed it directly in a court regarding Lt. Commander Data, Isaac Asimov did it in I, Robot, and in Star Wars, androids and other robots are sentient, feel pain, and are property. This obviously is not technology we have yet, but in terms of AI, it could be something we have to address in the future.

Here are my 2cents on the uncanny valley: - IMO it's a vestigial reflex from the time our ancestors were being hunted, as some predators are able to blend almost perfectly in to the environment or in some way shape or form they can mimic their pray's mate. So being able to pickup on those subtle variations between the real deal and a possible predator gives you an advantage, thus the uncanny valley was born!
