First time comic co-host Iliza Shlesinger reaches into our Galactic Grab Bag to ask host Neil deGrasse Tyson questions from our fans about everything from black holes and the speed of light to Neil’s favorite type of music. You’ll learn whether space “smells” and why it’s impossible to remain completely still, even at absolute zero. Neil explains what antimatter is, how we can use lasers to power lightsail spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in 15 years, and what the most dangerous aspect of faster-than-light travel would be. Find out what pulsars, quasars, magnetars, neutron stars, white dwarfs, and black holes have in common - and what Neil would write on our Sun’s tombstone. Explore whether SETI is asking for trouble, or if the real danger comes from old episodes of The Honeymooners. You’ll also hear about nuclear weapons testing, bouncing on the moon, peeing on Pluto, Neil’s porn name, intelligent dinosaurs, and how the honeymoon got its name.

I was the ship's IT Manager at the time and can tell you that Iliza and her crew were nothing but class and wonderful guests. I loved her comedy before the show, but after meeting her and working with her crew for the shows, I realized just how wonderful she was. Thank you Ms. Shlesinger, we loved having you aboard. Hopefully when the ship an open again, you can join the HORNET again for a COVID-19 relief show?????

Autorotation!
@chloekaftan
@chloekaftan 4 жыл бұрын
sure, they glide sideways.. which equals to death anyway. if you're talking about autorotation and the freewheeling clutch, in theory the pilot can save the helicopter upon engine failure and they are trained to do this, but that said almost no pilot has actually attempted to do this maneuver in a real life or death scenario, and of those who managed to respond quickly enough to start the maneuver before the helicopter spins out of control, only some of them survive the near suicidal maneuver. often times a pilot that has never experienced such a scenario outside of training will panic and completely forget their training, which is why most helicopter crashes happen. compare that to plane crashes, which by default have the ability to glide, reassess their situation, contact the Air Traffic Control for guidance and direction, find suitable soft/splash landing sites, dump excess fuel, carefully adjust heading and angle of descent, brace the passengers, etc. there are significantly better chances of survival in a plane, just because the pilots have the chance to think things through instead of panic and forget their training. granted a very experienced and seasoned veteran pilot can land a failing helicopter without a second thought, but there are very very few of these pilots compared to pilots who have never had to do such a suicidal maneuver in real life. disclaimer: autorotation only works for a few seconds once the freewheeling clutch disengages, if the pilot doesn't start the nosedive maneuver to increase kinetic energy in the rotor blades, the helicopter will start to spin out of control due to newtons 3rd law of motion: friction. which is why its absolutely crucial that the pilot start the maneuver immediately.

Hey Neil. Huge fan here! I'm a former helicopter co-pilot for the Norwegian Departement of health and first responder for 3 years. When the wings of a heli stops, you can glide to safety, given the right circumstances you can even slow to a gentle halt before touching down. I've only ever been in one heli while the engine went out once. But the adrenaline and attention to detail in the moment of emergency gave us the kind of slowmo feeling and we made a somewhat soft landing, without incidents. From about 800m above ground. All pilots here in Norway are given a safety course with handling of a dormant heli as a must-pass for getting your pilots licence. Just a little realitycheck from a long time Norwegian fan.

In the event of an engine failure, a helicopter pilot can use autorotation: Using forward and downward momentum to generate an upward flow of air through the rotor blades to rotate them, and in doing so generate lift and slow descent to a safe speed, like the 'helicopter seed' pods of Maple trees.

The weird thing is, Neil has said that before and a pilot corrected him in a SmarterEveryDay video and even Neil appeared in that video conceding he was wrong about it when he tweeted that a plane can glide to landing, and a helicopter wouldn't, yet its still gliding on wings either way of a fixed wing or rotating blades.

lol this! I was surprised Neil didn't know this. Although, depends on how high they get and angle of attack, if they'll have time to recover for autorotation to land.

Please bring her on. Although I'm not the biggest fan of her stand ups, she is doing a near perfect job at being co host. She is quick, no time wasted, so more content to go through. She's pretty funny at the right intervals. She teases Neil's geeky-ness/ nerdy-ness and brings out a good side of him. Also Neil acts differently with women, his natural charm comes out when speaking (nothing better or worse, just different), so it's got more soul to it when he speaks about our universe (might be far fetched, I dunno). She brings a bit of spice. Also she actually reads the names! And interprets questions with a good roleplay. **Chuck, if you're reading this.. please baby don't be hurt, it's not you, it's me

I love your work and always look forward to viewing each new video. It would be very helpful if you would "timestamp" each topic. I see this technique is becoming very popular in many KZfaq tutorials.
