Being the gourmand I am, I had to think about that for a while; but I think I'd have to say "tree mushrooms"; the kind that are jelly-like when cooked. Aesthetically? Probably this species I don't know the name of, but they grow usually on rotting logs or roots, can grow pretty large, and turn a bright orange as they mature. Not your stereotypical stem-and-rounded-cap mushroom, but flat and broad, I think.

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

Something about experiencing reality in a way that humans aren't able to by default is fascinating. My first time I got the typical 'We are all one/connected' realization, or in my case, i thought of all life on earth and earth itself as a living creature or Gaia.

When I was tripping on a high dose (to me), I felt like I was dying, I started elevating and seeing my body in the ground and I ascended to the sky thinking I was dead. When I was up there I saw some other souls like mine in the sky and watching humanity from the sky, I saw humans and earth just like a scientist sees bacteria growing, reproducing and dying in their petri plaque. It was craaazy and that caused me an immense existencial crisis that was solved later in the trip. It was the craziest and deepest experience in my life but it was some powerful that I’m not doing it again in many many years

@@DouglasRyan-ux9cj your pain is physical his is psychological that's 2 different things. you should go to physio therapy, strengthen your backmuscles and not take hallucinogenic drugs. if you got ptsd or depression it can help if overwatched by a speciallist

Now start wild foraging. It's like a scavenger hunt for adults. And you can eat some highly prized edibles. Morels, chanterelles, trumpets, oysters, porchini and so many, many more!!! Get out to your local park and take a look after a good rain storm.

And is it a different experience from acid? Quite right, I've never taken a hallucinogen; but I used to hang with people who did (acid), and I asked them to try to describe the sensations, visual effects, sound alterations, etc.. A pale substitute for the actual experience, but I didn't like the idea that some people get unexpected flashbacks. Didn't want to take that risk. But none of my friends ever said that doing LSD affected their overall outlook on life. That's why I'm asking if psilocybin is a different experience than acid. Still, you have to admit that taking any mood-altering or hallucinogenic substance doesn't change the world, it changes your brain, and it does that by altering your brain's electrochemical activity. But then, thinking it through, I suppose it can be argued that if one BELIEVES that one's relationship with the world has changed, then maybe in fact it has. But my question still stands; is psilocybin different? Thanks.

12:30 I can partially answer your question about why mushrooms are "so hard to grow on purpose". The short answer is, they're not. What's difficult is growing a pure strain of mushroom. I used to work on a mushroom farm that had 3 barns going at all times...2 stories tall. You'd have 1 barn sterilizing, 1 barn growing, and 1 barn harvesting. Then you'd switch. Anyhow, the thing about the mushrooms is, if you're growing them for human consumption, it requires a lot of regulation, a lot of testing of the manure (herbivores with no bad bacteria) , proper sterilization techniques (steam at a very high temperature for days) and sterile millet or other delivery method for the spores. Since the spores are airborne, they need to be affixed to something that can be sown, so you use something like sterile millet (bird seed). The long and short of it is, growing mushrooms is easy, but growing edible mushrooms takes science.

The true crown jewel of the magic mushroom kingdom is Panaeolus Cyanescens, most potent mushroom currently known to man and also the most incredibly life changing experience. Far more visual, colorful, joyful, spiritual, and profound, and far less body discomfort. You won't find many people that sell them, really rhe only way is to grow them yourself or pick them wild if you live in a part of the world where they grow naturally. Although cultivated mushrooms seem to be consistently more potent than wild picked, and picking mushrooms can be very dangerous if you aren't experienced and know how to spot potentially dangerous look-alikes.

The World Science Festival did a fascinating video about intelligence without brains a few years back. It would be great to know if Bryn had any updates on this topic that didn't make the cut for this episode!

I am very lucky to live near the mushroom capitol of the world: Kennett Square PA. You will find mushroom dishes in all the local restaurants and they are cheap to buy in all the local grocery stores. There is a mushroom festival every year where they line the streets with booths and food trucks and you can sample all the different dishes.

Fascinating episode Guys Bryn was a delight to listen to!I i watched a great video here on youtube about how mushrooms ruled the planet at one time millions/billions of years ago and i gained the utmost respect for these genius plants!! the writers on star trek discovery really went wild with the mycelium network idea through the galaxy as a new form of travel which was very interesting concept, also one of my all time favorite video games has glowing mushrooms in the post apocalyptic wastelands of DC and Boston Fallout you can pick the glowing mushrooms and make a stew with them for a slight increase in Radiation resistance!

I've enjoyed Psilocybin in my youth. One of my favourite rides, was back in the late 70s early 80s in the winter during a heavy snowfall with those really big snowflakes, just walked around town for hours watching it snow 😊 I've heard the rumors, but I've never hallucinated. Saw tracers on cars taillights that's the extent of it. I found the high to be similar to taking acid, but without the hangover (gut rot) when coming down. The common side effect i had, was sore jaw muscles from laughing so much. 😊😎

Set n setting. Next chance you get, get good headphones with bass, good long playlist, blankets and a dark room. Take a very large dose and this will be a trip that will transcend the boundaries. :)

Was the acid tabs much better back then? I was born in 88 so I missed the good days for that. Seems like I have had to eat 4-6+ tabs just to get a proper effect. Opinion seems they are often diluted down so much more these days. More worth my time to just harvest and extract my own LSA for conversion. If I go back to that. Morons putting fent into everything these days.

some of the research I've seen covered regarding psychedelic's for treatment of mental conditions suggests that there can be a "reset" effect to either the overall effected neurological system (like shaking the etch-a-sketch) OR that it resets (or otherwise alters) the sensitivity of the receptors.

Great guest, With some instruction on picking various indigenous herbs, and tidal sea plants, edible and medicinal mushrooms and wild mollusks , I can identify a few things, and you pass on information, to those who politely ask. Its an adventure and workout picking wild products, best done in groups, and taking the rare opportunity of field courses offered. You can easily get lost, and it happens. In the pacific northwest Chantrelles, pines are among the most prized at the same time usually in early fall they flourish there all manner of boletes, lobster mushrooms as well. Lately I have cooked with amanita mushrooms, in small amounts with no effect just a tasty mushroom. One is always experimenting in moderation with wild products. What is deemed safe to consume one year, can be stringent, taste like crap and toxic the next year. Good picking years for mushrooms come in cycles, it seems. Particular high end mushrooms cannot be cultivated. Perhaps in some far off future. No local is going to share that information, or disclose their special patches and secrets

Fun fact : In France we use dogs to hunt truffles but we also look at truffle flies ! (from wikipedia, faster than translation haha) : Its larvae develop in truffles, a behavior exploited in the search for truffles. The eggs are deposited in the soil above the fruiting bodies, and the emerging larvae dig for the truffles.

19:21 here, there was a discussion about defense mechanisms that I think deserves more arguments. First, the type : There are more active or passive mechanisms of defense characteristics in the nature. Second, the predators you have: Fungus has evolved from very long time and have tried to protect themselves from large spectrum of species. Human is a tiny part. So if the effect is hallucinatory to us, it may be paralytic for something smaller, like a squirrel. Third, the the timeline: Getting high on mushrooms sitting on a couch is very secure, but think at others Human era. If you are high but a sabre tooth tiger try to get into your cave, you may want to rethink your survival chance eating this. Fourth, the group versus individual: defense mechanisms from plant in fungus are group oriented rather than individuals. For a predator, getting sick(at any level) for eating a couple individual of a group, will be enough if it learn where is pain come from, to not eat that again. Therefore the group is safe. So there a lot of spectrum to think of and get outside our little modern human egocentric live to evaluate the effectiveness of a defense mechanisms :)

I grew up gathering mushrooms of all kinds, my favorites are the shaggymanes/maines, inkycaps. They will pop up through pavement, in round rock under overpasses, the drive thru at jack n the box. I have a big patch in the small lawn at a olive garden where the dishwashers tell me they arnt the mushrooms I want haha. The stems are amazing sautéed in butter.

I did lsd in mild doses as well as mushroom occasionally (they made me throw up and I got tired of my whole trip being me sitting on the bathroom floor throwing up and watching the towels breathing) but the many experiences I had were always extremely pleasant I'm glad its helping people to have these events help them so much!

I didn't believe the hype and then I took about an eighth first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Changed my life in such a positive way. My ego got out of the way and I found answers to questions I didn't even know I had. Such an enlightening and emotional journey. I was hesitant as I hav/had severe anxiety but once I just let go and let the 🍄 do their thing it was such a warm experience. Highly recommend! Not to be abused
