Why are we here? Who are we? What is the meaning of life? On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice answer fan-submitted Cosmic Queries on a range of topics that stem from the deepest thoughts, ideas, and feelings we share about our place in the universe.
Segment timecodes at bottom of description!
What boggles your mind? The expansion of the universe? The study of black holes? Neil explains why he’s boggled by research being done in the field of neuroscience. We ponder if the human brain will ever fully figure out the human mind. We also ponder if the universe has complexities that the human mind will never comprehend. You’ll learn about the minute differences between human and chimpanzee DNA and what that could mean for humans in comparison to something that could have higher intelligence than us.
We debate how long humanity will last. We investigate the consequences of humans creating an intelligence greater than our own. You’ll hear why Neil has confidence humanity will last given the collective nature of our intelligence. We ask, “If the universe is under no obligation to make sense to us, why study it in the first place?” Neil tells us why our five senses limit us from fully grasping certain elements and constructs of the universe - and how science picks up the slack.
We talk about the aging process and the idea of living forever. Then, we dive into the big question: what is the meaning of life? Neil shares his thoughts on how he finds meaning in his own life. You’ll learn why, whenever you look out into the universe, you’re looking at the past.
Discover more about the vacuum of space. We also discuss what should be the priority, or priorities, in space exploration. Lastly, you’ll learn about higher dimensions and if they’re bleeding into our own universe. All that, plus, find out more about the shape of space itself.
This episode originally aired as a podcast on September 27, 2019.

@@Kelly-yt5ko Well things are going to exist whether we're here to witness them or not, so if you look big-picture, it's all a bit arrogant. But on the pure sense of a cat wouldn't be called a 'cat' or defined by its physical characteristics in the way we do, anywhere else in the universe - we do make the basic concept of a cat. I'm terrible at explaining things, but I hope that made at least a rice-grain of sense lol. Good morning, by the way.

@@psychachu Things (Universe) will appear as they appear only if the form you seem to appear exists as it does. They are interconnected, your body is like an instrument wich creates this apparent Universe(experience) and vice versa. All there is, is an apparent experience happening, there is really no such things called 'real seperate things' or 'beings'. Seperation is just an assumption, a mis-understanding of the nature of Universe. And Universe is not in space or time, Universe (=all that can exist/ be precieved) equals ('your') mind. (Everytime I mention Universe it could be replaced with the word god)

I love how many times Chuck Nice's jokes are so intuned with the conversation, if you were to ever try and use them on a friend by saying, "My problems must have no gravity, cuz when I let them go, they just stay there." You'd have to most likely have to explain the scientifical fact of the term 'let it go'.

@@leomdk939 what if there is no answer to that question.. as frustrating as that would be... Lol So we are in our own physical body as an individual but are we part of a collective consciousness? perhaps we are all the same at the core, "consciousness" or "awareness" and the physical body is just a temporary host to facilitate the experience.. Or maybe it's nothing of the sort 😂
@leomdk939
@leomdk939 4 жыл бұрын
@@flimflama9333 I think there is no way for us to get to the answer, unfortunately. All that 'collective consciousness/temporary host' stuff could be true, and yet it does nothing to answer the question of "why is my current perspective from this body right now until it dies?" (and does it imply a different body after I die? If you believe in a 'collective consciousness' then it's not too far of a leap to get to reincarnation) ... I ask the question knowing full well there is probably no way for us to find the answer. It IS very frustrating - and a bit scary -- to discover that one of the greatest mysteries in the universe is the concept of 'yourself'. Having said all that -- I think about when we were 3 years old, we were not aware enough to know that we should ask where babies come from, physically. We just accepted that they appear one day. That was a complete story to us back then. When we were 7, we did not know we should ask what consciousness is - we just accepted that it is a thing that happens. When we were 11, we did not know enough to question 'the location of self'. You just accepted that you were you and that was enough information. As we matured, we gradually 'woke up' to the next question we should be asking. With all that in mind -- I wonder about which questions concerning our existence are we still too unaware to even know we should be asking? I know NDT talks about this question in a more general sense -- but for me this question is even more eye opening in this particular context of 'self'. Maybe in a later evolutionary stage in the future, the human mind will have the capacity to ask this question of 'local self' in a better way -- hopefully one that can reveal the answer. Until then, yes -- it's frustrating that all we can come up with basically amounts to ... ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My favorite time alive so far being alive for the past 22 years besides my experiences with family, which I'm fortunate to have, is being in a classroom that provokes me to use my knowledge to the very point that it is no longer of use, and from that point, all I can do is become an open journal and absorb whatever new information that I have yet to acquire. Saddest moment was when I graduated college with a ridiculous amount of debt and realized going to school for more degrees isn't going to remove it so now I'm on the continuous job hunt that will allow me to go back to school while working.

I think Dr NdG.Tyson and Chuck Nice are the best pairing for these discussions hands down. Chuck is a great guy with a fun and different perspective that just makes Dr Tyson really pop with information. Also highly entertaining while be clearly educational 🤟🤟

28:50 Currently reading the book. First one I've ever read by Neil that I didn't read non-stop from start to end. Not sure if that is negative, as in "not as good a the others" or positive, as in "I need to take a break and think about it". Maybe it's both in different places.

@@atlormerjo8830 Basically what the quote means, there are things we know for sure, and we _know_ that we know them. For example, we know that if you drop a ball, it falls to the ground because of gravity. Next, there are known unknowns. Basically, these are things that we don't know about, but we understand the fact that we don't know about them. For example, we know that dark matter exists and it has mass (and therefore has gravity), but we have no idea what dark matter actually is. It's an unknown, but we know that we don't know anything about it. For known unknowns, we ask questions, and eventually, figure out the answers. Finally there are unknown unknowns. These are basically just things that we haven't even discovered yet, so we don't even know how to ask questions about them. For example, if you were to go back a couple hundred years, dark matter would have been an unknown unknown. We weren't able to measure/estimate the mass of galaxies yet, so we hadn't discovered that there had to be some other invisible substance that gave galaxies their missing mass. We wouldn't have ever had to imagine dark matter back then, despite the fact that it certainly existed back then, just as it does now. So back, then, it was an unknown unknown, because we didn't know it existed at all.

Say one day, you actually discover a way to see an element or form of matter or "non matter" that cannot be seen or received by any of our senses, but was discovered by a device or instrument. The device's way to see it is so obscure from our senses that we cant understand or comprehend anything about it what it shows us. How would you even prove this finding actually exists and can be an addition to what we know. Would it even be worth finding if it cant be researched in our current state of being?

The universe and all there is, seems to behave in a cycle, matter in all sorts, even energy has a beginning and an end, it's born and it dies. I'm wondering, everything has his own frequency, i always felt that why do we like music so much, i think because it resonates with the frequency of our body and the harmony of the interaction between those frequencies makes us interact with it.
