Another starter, this time on a Jeep Laredo 3.7L engine. How to remove/install without removing the front drive shaft.
Welcome to Jamieson's Repair Shop!
My current retirement project is restoring a rusted out 1965 Thunderbird convertible from the inside out.
I'm taking it apart, repairing everything that needs repairing and putting it all back together.
I'm doing body work, paint removal, rust removal, metal fabrication, welding, forming, patching, and that's just the beginning!
Down the line there will be interior and engine work as well.
Come on into the shop and take a look!

I watched several Jeep starter change-out videos before I changed the one in my 2007 Grand Cherokee. Jamieson's was the best, thanks for saving me a lot of time and effort. Like that electrical tape on the universal trick! Thanks...Albert

Well I’ll be dipped!! I’ve been fighting with those universal sockets for years and have had to come up with a certain technique just to get it to work for maybe a half a turn a time. And all this time I never thought of stiffen it up with electrical tape! Thanks for the tip Alvin!

When I bought my new starter I was told about that wire the clips on the starter getting rust. I bet that's what was the problem
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 4 ай бұрын
Corrosion is definitely a problem with these starters. According to the guy that rebuilt this one, these starters lose the ground to the engine, and then start grounding anywhere it can, which starts degrading the internal components., so your guy is not wrong, and has likely seen many of these fail.

Troubleshooting a no crank no start on the same jeep right now. Hoping I don't have to do this out in the field, but I may. Thanks for the clear video. I was wondering if the wires were accessible with the starter already mounted to the car.
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 6 ай бұрын
The wires are very difficult to reach with the starter mounted in place, I found it easier to disconnect/reconnect with the starter off.
@cardude1957
@cardude1957 6 ай бұрын
@@J_R_Shop just finished the job. Agreed, wires are difficult to get to with the starter unmounted, and near impossible with it bolted up. Unfortunately, still have the no crank condition. The starter relay clicks, but no crank. And if I jump pin 30 to pin 87 where the relay sits, I still have no crank. I have 12v on the lug at the starter, but I didn't measure the trigger wire yet. I guess that's my next task.

How easy or difficult is it to remove skid plate... How many bolts?
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 4 ай бұрын
The skid plate under the engine has 4 bolts, I believe 13mm...one set, front or back, I can't remember, are key hole slotted, so you only need to loosen them, and remove the other two. It's made of plastic, so not heavy to remove, just a little awkward.

Where would you safely place your jack stands?
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 11 ай бұрын
At minimum, I use the pinch welds where you would use the jack, as if you are going to change a tire, as long as there are no major rusting on the car. If you can get them under the rear dif, and the front control arm mount, that would be safe.

@@J_R_Shop i was in a rush to see if you could show the tools needed i changed it out all you have to do is take off the wires then mount bolts and go straight backwards as it sits about a foot then keep the solenoid at top as you take it out its done now so you`ll need 15mm mount bolts 13 for one wire and just pull the small wire it slips on and off. done job now those 3.7 engines are plagued with problems these jeeps need a cummins diesel lmao kidding but you do a great job in your video i just was in a rush but its done now so thats why i was in a rush.
