This is a great video. A lot of repair videos like this are turning into online recipes, with 70% of the content being useless and irrelevant to pad the run time. This video is 100% content, no filler. I really liked the extra tips and details. I have an 81 Suzuki so while the bikes are different, your methods will really help me out.

Great video! 👍 always love seeing people find an easier way to fix problems and sharing them with everyone. So you think this would work on 92 nighthawk cb750?
@BuildSomethingAuto2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m not really sure I’ve never worked on one. If you pull the oil pan you may be able to see in there enough to know if its possible. Make sure you try bump starting it and driving it until it gets hot first, sometimes thats enough to unstick the starter clutch
@ADAMREZ2 жыл бұрын
I'm having the same issue, except mine actually makes even more of a harsher noise. How do you know if it's the actual starter and not the starter clutch?
@BuildSomethingAuto2 жыл бұрын
If the engine isn't turning but the starters still spinning it's the starter clutch. If the starters not spinning at all its the starter, battery, or wiring. Make sure you check your battery as well - most likely issue. Sometimes the starter clutch gets sticky and if you can bump start it then take it for a long ride to heat it up it can unstick them. Best of luck!

Has anyone done this on a later ‘83-85 model? CB650SC?
@drakeb6168 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this video. I just picked up an 82 cb650 sc as well that has starter clutch problems. I thankfully already seemed to have resolved my electrical issues. I was wondering how you got the oil pickup tube off though.
@BuildSomethingAuto Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I actually cant remember pulling it off, but it was a while ago. Usually they either have a single bolt holding them on, or sometimes just the oring and all you have to do is pull. Id recommend getting a repair manual they help a lot (even if this particular job can be done easier than the manual says)
@drakeb6168 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildSomethingAuto yeah, I’m certainly trying to hunt a physical one down. All I seem to find is the pdf version and I just get too distracted with tech. One of the many reasons I like these older bikes.

@@BuildSomethingAutowhen you pulled out that gear and shaft, did you also take off the oil pump gear on the other side?

My Honda died tonight. Not exactly the same issue, the starter spins but the clutch/chain doesn't engage at all. I'm really hoping that I can cheese the fix a little bit like you did. I really don't want to take the engine out...
@BuildSomethingAuto2 жыл бұрын
Best of luck. If you dont have it id highly recommend that impact screwdriver and a good torx bit (linked in description). I woulda stripped those bolts to hell without that

@@BuildSomethingAuto I've actually had one of those sitting in a cart for a few weeks, aimed at another project. Definitely gonna pick it up. Here's hoping an 85 nighthawk 750S has a similar starter clutch :)

Anu advices for me? I have Honda vf1000f2 and i changed everything inside starter clutch. Springs etc. Still it doesnt movie engine? If i turn starter clutch by hand i see it doesnt turn so it should spin the engine. But when starting with starter it only spins starter clutch.
@BuildSomethingAuto3 ай бұрын
If your starter isn't spinning fast enough then the clutch won't engage (I probably should have talked about this in the video). I'd make sure you have a good battery, good cables/connections, and a good starter. You could try hooking jumper cables up to it to see if it spins the starter faster and if that helps it catch better. Good luck.

Did you ever find a solution for the starter clutch not starting engine

I fixed the starter clutch in this video, but still had carb issues and had problems finding parts. 2 years later its finally running, new video on it in 2 weeks or so.

Im not sure ive never worked on one. Id recommend getting a repair manual, theyre invaluable. Forums are also a useful resource if you can find one for your bike.

Is my 1983 650 knight shaft driven the same?????
@BuildSomethingAuto3 ай бұрын
I believe so, but I'm not positive. I'd try and find an exploded parts diagram, or a service manual to verify.
