Your skills are so impressive. I wouldn't even begin a project like that. But then , I am 73 haha! When I was your age, I did do a lot of home changes, wallpaper, painting furniture... adding trims. But nothing like opening a ceiling!!!!!! That's way above my paygrade. You're every husband's dream. !!!! A woman who tackles her own Honey Do list! You go girl!!!!!

Absolutely fabulous … I didn’t know you could get those type of tiles in styrofoam. I know larger-sizes of crown moulding comes in styrofoam … once you have it up and painted, no one will ever be able to tell it’s not plaster! Another suggestion … if you don’t want to do the whole ceiling in tin and/or styrofoam tile AND you have a centre light, you can get a circle or square to put up above/around the light (usually round works best but I’ve seen both), trimmed with cornice moulding (if tin) or crown moulding (if styrofoam) to frame it. It looks really nice and is way less expensive. I would have suggested the living room for that type of look given you’ve done so much down there … but if memory serves me correct, you have pot lights in that room. That’s the thing with circa homes … some don’t have ceiling lights. The 1870 circa home I had installed them after the fact … but the wiring wasn’t grounded as it is now a days (not knob ‘n tube but two-strand), so I wasn’t able to exchange for a fan or nicer chandelier, as there was no ground wire to reciprocate the light, without having to call in an electrician. If you ever do go the route of tin tiles try your bathroom first … and then if you have the $, the kitchen would be your next best option. And lastly … and it would be a statement let me tell you … the foyer! But you’d have to weigh it out as to how many rooms you would do around the house … too much of a good thing spoils it. There’s a place in Kitchener, Ontario (‘Peter’ owns it) and he has pictures on the website, of what he did with their place … worth having a look … it gives you some good ideas what you can do! The only downside (besides the obvious expense) with tin ceilings is you have to put up slats and that just adds to the expense, even if the wood isn’t top grade! I find lumber is really expensive … COVID prices … and I highly doubt things will ever go back down, to where they should be! I’d stick with the styrofoam tiles for upstairs, if you’re doing any more rooms but downstairs (and only for the sake of resale) I’d go with the tin. But again, if and when you can afford it. I can hardly wait for the finishing of their room. Glad you didn’t have to take the entire ceiling down. When I had to put up drywall up over the plaster (the insulation guy fell through the roof ~ he hurt his pride more than anything), they used really LONG screws … and it worked!
