STARTING The ABANDONED Airplane TUG I BOUGHT For $500

I bought a Pettibone Mercury airport tug or tractor for $500. It was part of the deal with my cheap 7.3L PowerStroke and had been sitting outside for years. I was more excited about this than the diesel, I've always wanted to drive airport equipment around and getting it running first is a fun challenge,

Seeing that old airport tug reminds me of my high school days. Our school had an old tug which we used to drag/maintain the cinders on the running track. A bunch of us would sneak out after school, hot-wire that tug and take it ripping around the track. It ran pretty good except for one thing...it had no brakes! I was coming down the straightaway, had it floored, and couldn't stop, nearly took the tug through the fence around the football field.

Step 2: Add the Sniper fuel injection kit. Then bring in the guy who tuned the R8 and go for peak power in the 6000 RPM range. Then get the wing off of Hoovie's new R8 (he doesn't want it) to increase the tugs down force at speed.

When I was sick,I was down for over a week and and a half. I'm impressed you are up and moving. Get some rest though. You don't want to wear yourself out and be exhausted to the point you get sicker. Congrats on the tug. That will make a useful car puller or engine puller. Got a bolt stuck in an engine? Breaker bar hooked up to the tug via a tow strap. It's coming out. Someone overtightened the lugnuts on a tire? Guess what is coming to fix that.

I hope you'll end up keeping the tug around! Put a livery on it in the same style as the one on the mower (I'm thinking "WatchJRTow"). With an updated ignition system and electronic injection it should be quite reliable, and it would help with moving projects around the shop. Why carry a battery to a charger when you can pull a whole car to it? :D The tug, floor cleaner and forklift should have a reserved parking space somewhere in the shop with lines on the floor.

I changed this garbage disposal today for a millionaire from Dubai. He was one of the lucky ones too get rich off oil. Instead of buying versace and Gucci . He saves all his money and saves everything he can from this planet . He’s big on go green . Taught me a lot because we both have slums in our countries but we both still wanted better for this world instead of letting it’s problem consume us . I am only telling you this . Because you are the rare and maybe only person I know who brings these pieces of history together. The fact that you bring old cars back to life when some considered them ready for a land fill. All in all. All I’m trying to say is that I know your just having fun but you really are doing something nice for the world . Imagine the man who invented that . Years upon years later . Some one took his craft and put heart into . I know I’d fill important . I’d be in shock that a piece of me is still very useful. God bless you and I hope you the best I been watching your videos for years now . Still rooting for this channel to be a very big channel

I tinker with old tractors from the 40s and 50s. Restore them and such. I don't usually even check the ignition stuff when we get a tractor. Just replace it all before even trying to start it. We recently got a 1954 Ford that we don't plan to restore. We're just going to use it for small jobs around home. I think I'm going to go with electronic ignition and fuel injection since I'm not worried about it be original. The plan was to restore it but some pretty expensive issues come up making it hard to keep it era correct. So now, it's just going to be a cheap little tractor.

We had one of these with a slant 6 and a manual transmission at a boat yard I worked at. If you would finesse the throttle just right, you could bounce the front end up and down like it was on hydraulics. We were young and dumb and it was a blast to do. Damn thing would also pull some heavy boats around....

Agree with the electronic ignition. We kept the points, but made them switch transistors that did the heavy current switching to the coil. September 1964 Radio Electronics magazine has the absolute simplest transistor ignition plans. Built and installed on several vehicles - from a 63 slant-6 to a 74 Civic. All still going strong. JR's hall effect ignition is far easier these days.

I see a new cap, rotor, points, plugs, condenser and possibly a coil in the tug's future. Either a carb cleaning or rebuild too. I'd love to see some boost added to that - why? Two things: Unless you had the meter set up for measuring current you could not blow a fuse. The fuse only blows when you exceed the current of the selected amps setting. Voltage ranges on that meter have an impedance of 10 mega ohms. Second: If you ever kept a vehicle long enough you would know that electronic pickups do fail. They are manmade and do not last forever! Back in the 70's and 80's I replaced many of them.

It’s the rust on the top of the rotor! That’s not going give you enough juice ! It has to make a good connection to the cap. New points condenser and cap might run you like $20 bucks at Napa. They have them in stock. I know it’s not o’reillys you have to go to Napa for these old school parts
