I bought this 2001 Saturn SC2 for $700 and the ad said it had bad clutch. I showed up expected the car to be destroyed but it was far better than I expected. The DOHC 4 cylinder runs great, the body is in excellent shape, and basically just needs a clutch to drive again. I've got the clutch ordered so it's time to tear the transmission out and get ready to replace it... once I got the old clutch out the failure was far different than you'd expect. It wasn't worn out, it literally broke and parts flew everywhere stranding the car.

The non-self adjusting clutch was from 91 - 98, 99 - 02 had the self adjusting clutch. It is possible to run the non-self adjusting clutch in a 99 - 02 car but you need the entire assembly (flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, TOB, and hydraulics). You cannot however mix and match parts from both the self adjusting and non-self adjusting clutch assemblies.

When I did alot of parts swapping, replacing and rebuilding on my 10th anniversary SL2 and my sc2, sixth sphere forums was extremely helpful. Someone made a comment about the correct fluid in the gearbox and thats absolutely right. The speedo issue seems like a disconnected plug and should fix rev limiter issue. The window switch is common issue. I think the contacts just need to be cleaned up as I had to do that for mine and the foglight switch as well. You can replace if you can find a spare one. I had a few spares from junkyard always on hand. Speaking from experience, those plastic panels should buff out nicely if you want to polish and coat them.

The plastic retainer strap on the end of the hydraulic cylinder rod helps locate the rod into the release lever. So just leave it on there like you did. When you push the clutch pedal in, you will feel it break and the rod pops into place in the release lever. You may want to pull the vehicle speed sensor out of the transaxle case and just do a quick inspection on the differential pin. There is a small roll pin that sometimes breaks allowing the pin to start "walking" out and if it moves far enough will crack the case or worse you may hear a loud bang and fluid leaks out. Some people have drilled the hole where the roll pin is located to a bigger size and installed a "rolled" roll pin. Supposed to be a stronger repair. Also, these are great little cars even with their quirks. I used to own an SL2 and worked on these for over ten years. Just keep an eye on the engine oil just to see if it burns any. Easier to check than to replace an engine.

Saturn's do have a two step rev limit. If you free rev it in neutral, I drops out around 4500. It goes to red line under load. That will likely fix itself when you figure out why your speedo isn't working. Cruise too would need the VSS signal, so that's likely to come around too. If it doesn't, check the clutch switch at the pedal since you replaced the clutch master cyl.

Pretty much what I was going to say, it's limited to 4500 because the computer doesn't know the car is even moving. Hence no speedo & no cruise. I have an SL1, manual trans, the rev limit is right around 6K when the car is moving.

It's rev limiting because it doesn't see the vehicle speed above 25mph. These also have a shift indicator when the vehicle speed sensor is working correctly. Your check engine light is related to it as well but i'm sure the lack of O2 sensor is another reason.

Lol yikes yes if the fluid spec is for ATF you gotta use ATF, especially for a manual trans because the synchro action is so critical to the fluid type. Not to mention if the trans is using bearings made for ATF and you use MTF you can roast the bearings (MTF is too thick). Just like that Foxbody in the background. Spec for manual trans is ATF! :) keep up the good content!

The band on the slave cylinder is supposed to break. It is to keep the pushrod from falling out, align it to hit the pivot on the fork perfectly and make it that easy to do the bayonet mount twist. Reinstalling one that has the band already broken can take a few tries until you master it as that pushrod is all floppy, it has to be depressed about 2" BEFORE you can engage the bayonet mount...this all while keeping it from slipping out of the detent in the release fork.

I'm doing this job on an sw1 here in a few days. When pulling that slave out to do the clutch, can I ziptie the pushrod back into the slave as far as possible and "rebreak" it by reinstalling?

@@ThatOddLife We never had any luck with any method except looping a string or ziptie over the push rod while getting it seated in the "cup" of the release arm, pulling out the whatever it was before pushing in and turning. The first time doing it is frustrating but take your time and you will get it.

@@michaelkrenzer3296 sweet! That was what I was wondering. So I can zip tie that pushrod back in, clip it when it clicks into place, and pull it back out? I hope I'm understanding

@@ThatOddLife As I said, you CANNOT ziptie it back in place...there is no place for the ziptie to attach. You can loop (think a "U" shape just to keep in flopping down) a string or ziptie around the pushrod just to hold it horizontal as you position the pushrod into recess you cannot see inside the bell housing. Before you push and turn the slave cylinder into the bayonet mount, you pull the string or ziptie out.

Nice! I wish the clutch disc had tabs to retain the damper springs. I think I would have turned the old flywheel to lighten it up, make a little freer revving engine. Nice job anyway.
