I understand that the Larger x Tool laser is not in everyones budget. Please note that all of these holders can be made with a cheap laser, or by hand, or bought from sellers like www.aglimpseinside.org. He is both a talented content creator and someone who makes amazing French cleat and tool holder accessories. Or you can adapt the original idea.

The nice thing about French cleats is that you can still hang a section of peg board but it's easy to shift the peg board location if you decide that your organization needs modified.

@@ianbelletti6241 screw pegboards, honestly theyre a PITA. Great for a dozen items, thats it. With falling pegs and being inadequate in every way, I'm giing cleats forever.

@@DOCWHOK9 I was talking about combining methods. If you have some things that are better off hung on pegboard the cleats would allow you to hang the pegboard and keep it much more adjustable with everything else you intend to hang. Yes, pegboard does have it's downfalls but you may find a condition where it's beneficial to you. Using the French cleats takes away the major downside of the normal method of hanging pegboard which happens to be the typical fixed placement forcing you to have to arrange around the peg board.

I just have to ask, why not cut the french cleat as part of the side panels ? Instead of screwing a separate cleat onto the outside of the panel making it wider, and thereby wasting wall space.

@@tonysicily2687 I know what you meant but still posted the joke. Besides, people do fail to realize that the peg board hangers are often big enough to hang multiples of tools. The only difference between French cleats and peg board is how much you can extend the load off the wall and how much load it can handle per hanger.

Good stuff. An old uncle of mine in his workshop used to screw the lids of jam jars under the shelf with 2 screws, then he could put screws nails etc in jars easily see what was where, unscrewed them as he needed them and make good use of the space under the shelf. Use this method myself 50 years on.

I think you may have made a small mistake when building your wall. My French cleat wall is done in the old style, but has zero wobble. The only time I had wobble was when I accidentally mixed up the boards I was utilizing on the backer wall with the boards I was using on my boxes for. My first go around, and it ended up not being a perfect match between the two angles. This taught me how important it is to keep you angles the exact same throughout to keep everything rock solid like this system was intended to be used. If you have a perfect 45 degree angle, you should have a solid joint no matter which side you use. But if you are off by half a degree or more, you must make sure to keep the boards that were cut at let's say 45.5 degrees all on the wall, and the boards at 44.5 degrees on the hanging boxes. Then everything will match up perfect as long as every cut was done at the same cut angle. This angle could actually be anything as long as everything is consistent throughout. But keeping it at a perfect 45 is easier to remember down the road as a 44.5 degree angle can be hard to recreate exactly. I think your problem with wobble is because you got different angles mixed up. Two 44.5 degree boards will never hold tight and will always wobble. Take your time when cutting them, plan accordingly, and your French cleat system should be rock solid without having to go through the hassle of the extra cut out pieces. You'll end up with a much stronger joint than those fasteners will give you as there is zero play, and no where for the wood to bend or give.

Not my first view of your channel, but I’ve finally subscribed. Why? Your common sense, straightforward approach, as well as your humble presentation style. I like how you didn’t make a fuss about dimensions, math or mandatory use of a table saw (things that many / most other french cleat wall “experts” do). Very reassuring, especially for beginners. This is gorgeous. I don't imagine I'm going to upgrade my tool storage space from a bunch of cheap steel shelves in my lifetime, but hey, if one of my grandkids gets into woodworking, I'd like to see them build something like this. I don't actually have any grandkids yet. Life is a work in progress.

It is wierd but when I planned the workshop build in my head I considered windows on every wall and it was only a full wall French cleat system that stopped me. I am glad I stopped. Ive already covered up half the windows I have. Wall storage space is a premium.

We used the same idea as your assigning each tool to a specific location. We also made it so the most frequently used tools where front and center and the less used tools further away from your work location. We also streamlined other tasks to increase productivity. Preventative maintenance and scheduled replacement of parts that could take longer to complete a task and/or lead to subpar results is another aspect we focused on. It all worked and made jobs easier…. Why I can’t seem to keep up with those same ideas in my garage I have no clue! lol!

I like your use of the French cleat brackets. They are more efficient than the free standing cabinet & storage shelves I keep down cellar with my power tools. Your new shop building has plenty of room with everything up on the walls. Nice job!

I have to say if space was not an issue like some of the commercial size shops I see, I would not have such an intricate system but for me, although this is a great step up from the shed, I have to be so careful not to overfill the floor and just not be able to work.

I actually built a french cleat wall in my work trailer. Absolutely love it. Far more compact than shelves, everything has a specific home (so workers mess up myntrailer less 😂), and modular. I can switch it up as needed.

@startmaking if you had left each cleat with both top and bottom edges at a 45 degree angle, you could have then stacked a cleat on top of a cleat on your wall. Also another tip, for the daily common tools, make the holder flat on the bottom so you can take it off the wall and carry it to your job site, and it can sit flat on a work surface.

That is a really good point Tony. The flat bottom is one that I am kicking myself about now. It would be great with a frame of a base to stand it on. But , I am planning a cleat on my bench so it could be ok.

@@startmaking1 Any chance you could just mention the sizes and dimensions? Are they on your website somewhere? No point reinventing the wheel! I think it's a 60mm gap between cleats, and 50mm on the long face of the cleat itself, and you're using 18mm backboard.

@@startmaking1 possibly the same learning curve, but I think start up costs can be less for the cnc. I purchased a secondhand Oozenest 1075 for £200 (including approx £200 of bits/accessories). I started with a small Sainsmart 3020, which is surprisingly capable, but restricted by its size.

Hey, here is one for you - IKEA do a paper dispenser for children. I discovered I can mount a whole range of tapes… I bet you could design a French Cleat version. I love mine…so useful and allows me to access tape length etc really easily. Thanks for this vid. Love the video, Mark. Put a French cleat system in this year, but need to get cracking on more holders, so your video has given me the inspiration to do so. I'll probably stick with the traditional cleats, though. I'm happ with them. Thinking 3D is a great point. One holder I would recommend is a saw holder which holds your saws by friction and dowels. Works a treat.

Love the idea of the hanging boxes. Only one I saw that I can't personally get behind is the chisel box. The way it is set up, you have no way of knowing where a specific chisel size or profile is without hunting through each one until you find the one you're after. Plus, it looks like they end up sitting on the cutting edge. Other than that, I really like the ideas here.

Wonderful vid again. Thank you for your time and passion. I know of a wise older man that combined french cleat and peg board. Yup! He took his time and used 1x3 pine boarders, and struts every 16in, but holy crap is his tool board full but clean looking and organized. OMG it's..... it's just awe inspiring. I wish I could get a pic but he's on the other coast. One of his incredible idea too was he put scrap peg board piece on a couple 45° cleats, enlarged the holes and they hold his router bits and other stuff like the same. And yes he already understood bout the depth space you are talking about. He also deconstructed all his f clamps.... He could make any size f clamp up to 48inch brilliant man

A couple of notes: 1) I like the way you store your squares, putting them sideways maximizes the number of things next to each other and is much more practical than putting them flat on the wall 2) The same principle can be used for your saws. A simple board with a few cross cuts can be used to store both your japanese saws and your western saws sideways, again, maximizing the number of them/making space for something else. 3) For handplanes and random other stuff that is more blocky - if you have enough depth space from the wall, consider building a simple open floorstanding shelving unit. The most space for planes is gained by putting them side by side on a flat surface, very much like the rows and rows of molding planes you see in old woodworking shops. Plus they are much more easier to grab and return that way. Any space not used for planes on the shelves can be then used for any other blocky thing you need to keep close - sharpening gear, power tools, bit boxes, the list is endless.

I have not seen a better, more instructive and entertaining review of FC use, just brilliant, and so very easy… 👏🏻 Great tips on cutting the FCs themselves and the various holders, not to mention the use of a back board, which I had not previously considered. I'm a french cleat guy too. I am just now putting them up on the wall! I kind of wish I would have watched this before. I would have put all of them on a backer board. That way when/if I move I can just grab them and go. It takes a lot of time and money to fill an entire garage with cleats!!! Now, I could just take what I have put up so far down...... hmmm, I'll have to consider that.

It's not that big of a problem in all honesty. Both ways work. But it is surprising how quickly a ply sheet disappears when cutting cleats lol.

@@startmaking1That ain't no lie! I did decide to put them on backer board. I really like the idea to be able to move them, or take them down to get inside the wall if needed (I have had to do that in the past when I added 220 for a machine). Mostly if you move.... you can take them with you and within an hour have them on the wall making organization of a new space nearly automatic!!! (I had to move out of a 30x40 barn into a 2 car garage and may do it again!) I also really like your advise of thinking in 3d.... That will be very helpful! So thanks and again, Best french cleat video I have seen. Oh, what kind of wood do you use for cutting with your laser cutter?

At the moment the laser is just using 1/4 inch ply. I didnt find cutting the 1/2 inch worked well. Loads of charring,. So if I need to make anything thicker I just cut twice from 1/4 inch and glue. Oh and thank you again. You are right about moving it easily and In think it will make your life a load easier. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Brilliant Mark Nice work as always mate i will be steeling some of those ideas love them all but especially the file and chisel holder im glad u got rid of those horrible and bad use of space magnet strips and your bin idea is the hero iv still got a plastic bag hanging on the side of my work bench on a hook so ill be looking fwrd of building your shop bin idea great work your a legend mate .

This is really interesting bud. Ive been making five cabinets for my hobby room, the back of which have a rabbit so an overlap between backboard and sides which I'll be cutting a French cleet with to take lots of stress into the sides which have most support I think. Basically your design but cut from the back of the sides with the addition of a lateral 45 piece. I like your cleat ideas bro, thanks for sharing!

You could probably stack 4-5 layers of plywood and batch cut them on a bandsaw if you have one

I cut french cleats from HDPE cutting boards and use them as drawer slides The drawers never jam, slide easily, and actually keep the carcass sides from bowing. It's necessary to use flathead screws, and space the screws closer than usual. About 1mm clearance between the drawer cleat and the carcass wall is needed. I think that hardwood could be used as well if they're well waxed.

Hi, Mark. Always love your creative talent. From your past reactions, to a few of my comments, you seem to think I am man with a great and organized shop. OMG! is That far from the truth! My "work area" is a cluttered mess of tools and home storage, in my small (SMALL) home basement. Well anyway, I was looking around, the other day, and saw I have several bench top machines on commercial, wheeled, metal stands, with either straight ( || ) or slanted ( /\ ) legs. I suddenly realized how much square feet, of floor they take as well as cubic feet, above the floor. So, now, I need to build some rolling cabinets, to put those tools on. While thinking about that, I realized, I don't have to do the whole project at once. I can build the basic boxes, with wheels, put the tools on them and come back later, to make the drawers and trim (if any). Then, I will have the rolly convenience, which I Really need, along with drawers for tools (later), which I also need. Well, OK, I need to clean up my house, too. Just felt the need, to share that, don't know why. 😁✌🖖

It's strange when inspiration takes us. I am still torturing myself about what kind of work bench I want. large all in one or a more mobile set of benches. It wont be right either way as there are so many advantages or disadvantages to each. One thing I have to make sure of though is that I today after each project/build because if it gets to far along and there is too much mess I wont tackle it and everything will grind to a halt. I suppose making videos is also a different use of a workshop to most people so my priorities are slightly different. Good luck with the tidying.

Thank you - I thought my work shop design was clever when I put it together 30 years ago. I added pegboard. I helped a bit but mot that much. I really like your use of French cleats and I know how tough they are. I built a full room width closet and hung every thing on the cleats. I only two and I should have had put in more. for flexibility. My workshop needs an update and If I moved everything from inside the table onto the wall, then moving it around would be easier. I need that garbage bag holder too. I would cut those cleats with my track saw (got it used and it was a demo used by a factory rep). Thanks again for a brilliant video. I can give all my pegboard stuff to my neighbour. I got them really inexpensively at an auction.

Track saw is a great idea for cutting cleat. Way better than the circular saw. It is a really fun and effective way to store stuff. But I have to say, I am making a work bench and there are some storage areas. Not everything needs to be on a cleat. It's whatever works best for you.

Ah ... I get you. Interesting. I considered this, but as I have a cellar to play with, I opted for adjustable wall-mounted metal shelving mounted in front of damp proof course plastic from a roll. The adjustable wall-mounted metal shelving isn't hugely cheap, but it's flexible, doesn't rot and lets me recycle material that is cheap or free into shelves or units attached to the metalwork. It doesn't tidy up after you, though.

Very useful video, thank you. One thing I do with my Makita batteries is to put a label on each one with a unique number and the date of purchase. This helps me to even up the usage of the batteries and also let's me know if a battery is likely getting to the end of its useful life. It means that I don't end up thrashing the life out of an older battery by putting it on the circular saw and breaking down a sheet of plywood.

I'm planning a closet room in my small duplex. You've got me rethinking my whole world. My largest obstacle is committing to design. A wall of cleats will allow me to be as wacky as I wish and add as needed. Questions, please. I will be going into masonry walls. All but a small section btw bath and kitchen which has a tiny bit of sheetrock so there is no 16" on center studs to go into. 1. How thick should backing board be?2. How far should I space the tapcons (masonry screws) on backer board? How many rows of screws? 3. How long of screws would you recommend? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. This will get me going with less anxiety about how many drawers, shelves, hanging rods, etc. I can do as I need. Cheers!

Hi. Apologies that it has taken a while to reply. I have been trying to figure out the best way to answer. I have to say that I am no expert in the construction side of this and have never mounted a cleat wall onto a masonry wall. I dont want to give you my best guess but instead would recommend that you join the French cleat FB group as they have a very active community that answers questions exactly like this and have far more expertise than I can offer. regards Mark

30 years ago when I moved into my current shop. I ran a french cleat around the whole shop, painted, like a chair rail, but much higher. I made storage units on panels that hold all my chisels, and marking out saws, you name it. Worked great and a lot less wasted space than multi cleat walls.
