The “Quiet Sickness” signs originate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. It has to do with brown lung disease. Often factory workers would contract brown lung due to no air circulation in the factories. Apparently it gives you a drowning sensation when you lie down, so they’d often sleep out on the porch in recliners. The signs were a way to make sure that noise level was low for them to get some rest.

I liked that, sort of a "hobo heaven" being resourceful, making something out of what's at hand, shade of the bridge, cool water on a hot day and just chill enjoying the visuals of mud swallows and turtles while people drive above blissfully unaware.. Yep, beautiful lettuce.
