Gerry Rafferty wrote this song to describe what it’s like to be brought into the big business of music. The inspiration for the song comes from one time the band attended a signing party at a London restaurant; he described the scene as being like the Last Supper, with everyone worshiping the words of wisdom from the record label’s chief executive, and he was just sitting there, stuck in the middle with his band-mate. By the way, Gerry Rafferty produced the Proclaimers who you played the other day.

I'd skipped school on my first day at a new school and wound up at this deli ordering a sub for lunch. As I played a pinball machine waiting for my sub this song came on and this beautiful girl 15-16 years old same as me began to dance right in the middle of the room. Gerry Rafferty on lead vocals. He got big in the late 70s with the song Baker Street. Very talented fellow. My other favorite song of his is Home and Dry.

I always think of Michael Madsen dancing around to this song with a straight razor, right before he cuts a cop’s ear off in the movie Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino’s first movie.

This was great on the dance floor too, when you're dancing with a potential partner and calling everyone around you clowns and jokers!

Gerry Rafferty wrote this song and performed it with Stealers Wheel. He also wrote Baker Street with that unforgettable saxophone solo. Unfortunately he committed suicide in January 2014. Listen to Moonlight and Gold.

This is one of those songs where you could ask, "Is this guy on drugs?" To me, the guy in this song took too much of something. Although "clowns to the left...jokers to the right" could be poetic, I think that he's hallucinating clowns and jokers in the room. He's trying to make sense of what's going on...If you've ever been there, you'll know what I'm talking about. :-)

Yeah, I don't get a drug vibe from this, more of a drinking song or general crazy world/life song. I've taken lots of psychedelics of various kinds back in the day, but never hallucinated clowns and jokers. What the hell were you taking? Sounds like some heavy shit, man. 🤔🙃

In his obituary of Rafferty for the January 5, 2011 issue of the Daily Telegraph, Martin Chilton said of this song that it was "Written as a parody of Bob Dylan's paranoia, it ridiculed a music industry cocktail party, with the lyrics: Clowns to the left of me jokers to the right here I am, stuck in the middle with you To Rafferty's utter disbelief his parody, composed as little more than a joke but with a catchy pop arrangement, struck gold, selling more than a million copies.
