We've tested Steam Deck against PlayStation 4 - and we came away impressed. However, the RDNA 2 GPU within the Deck contains features that last-gen consoles do not. So to what extent is Steam Deck next-gen ready? How does it compare against Xbox Series X in titles like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition and the super-taxing Microsoft Flight Simulator? What about Unreal Engine 5's staggering Lumen and Nanite technologies? It's all in here - along with Windows 11 vs Steam OS benchmarks.

This device has demonstrated to me that Valve is on to something here. I think we have all grown up playing our handheld devices and wished for a more robust, full featured PC or console-like experience. The tech just hadn't sufficiently advanced to the point that this level of execution could be achieved. The PlayStation Portable and Vita were flashes in the pan of this kind of thing but we're quickly abandoned. Hopefully, with the staggering number of preorders and with Valve rethinking its priorities because the most expensive version of the SteamDeck was the most pre-ordered which was not what they expected, with those things as indicators, I hope this thing ends up in many, many hands and gets some legs and attention to keep developing this beyond its initial stages.

@@rilufuzz Everyone says "wait for the 2nd or third version before buying." The problem is that if there weren't enough people pre-ordering and buying the first version, Valve would never devote the time or money in a second iteration. I felt that even if the first version wasn't exactly what everyone wanted, it was important that I purchase it so that Valve could see how important the idea is to me. Thankfully, it seems a lot of people agreed with me and sales numbers and media coverage on this thing have been amazing.

This is my layman's understanding: The RADV driver's raytracing implementation is still missing some raytracing extensions and support is still being worked on. Support for KHR_ray_query is coming in the next release of mesa 22.1 - for now it is experimental and can be enabled with the "RADV_PERFTEST=rt" environment variable. This extension is needed for many games with RT. I am not sure if the version used in Steam Deck's SteamOS has this extension available yet. There are also improvements to performance being worked on in conjunction with this - such as: the "LBVH!" patch set. It showed a market improvement to RT performance in games not already optimized for their BVH construction/traversal (i.e. games with tons of objects bouncing rays around that are not ordered into convenient arrangements to avoid deep construction or traversal of the bounding volumes.)

A lot of the efficiency of proton comes from the fact that all the calls to the directx rendering pipeline are translated to vulkan. Proton + vulkan ends up being quicker than directx even on Linux desktop machines. I think directx may just be a good bit slower than vulkan.
@JaimeIsJaime
@JaimeIsJaime 2 жыл бұрын
directx really needs to improve. It is very likely the reason why PS5 performs so well in comparison to series X even outperforming it in a lot of titles. I don't think series X has hardware bottlenecks like some people claim, but directx 12 might actually be one and microsoft should really take care of this.
@sergeysiminyuk
@sergeysiminyuk 2 жыл бұрын
This isn't the case consistently. There are cases where proton is significantly slower, less stable, etc. A translation layer will always be worse than native, but sometimes linux with less bloat will run a few better even with proton. Valve needs to up their driver game, the Deck can be faster still with better drivers for sure.

Valve has been working on that for quite a while now. The main blocker was that the raytracing extension for Vulkan only got finalized very recently. Now drivers and DXVK (the component of proton that translates directx to Vulkan) have to implement it. It’s really only a matter of time though.

@@flograuper9294 RT and DLSS has worked on Linux via Vulkan for NVidia cards for a while. Around about November time last year it was added to Proton for NVidia H/W. I think major issue with AMD is that the OSS drivers are lagging on RT. I think it's running now, just very slowly or variably. If you want RT on Linux with an AMD card at the moment you have to use the AMD proprietary drivers which lose out on all the other advantages that the OSS drivers have had added to them via Valves efforts for the Deck.

The perf differences per game on Deck may be due to implementation differences in Proton. As DX9-11 games utilize DXVK, and DX12 uses VKD3D, which isn't as mature as DXVK. When it comes to the Unreal Engine 5, I really hope you've built and packaged the projects on Windows, and didn't run them in the Editor. As there will be a huge difference in performance. If you're interested, you could also compile the engine on Linux (or use a pre-built binary) and package a native Vulkan version of these projects. I can confirm that both the Valley and City samples work flawlessly on Linux. I could offer some help in that regard if you want or send you packaged projects to run on the Deck. Could be a nice comparison between OSes, RHIs etc. If you want to do it right.

The PS5 has no display and you can get a Steam Deck for 400$, not 600$. A cheap SD and speeds seem really good from tests. Not to mention PS5 has paid online, much closed ecosystem, it’s not a PC where you can put Windows, games cost more, games don’t carry over to your PC free of charge and so on, but again, you are not comparing products in the same category. Pretty good for a 1st generation device ..... I can't wait to see what the 2nd generation looks like in a couple of years where we should see gains in both performance and efficiency (battery life) ..... Actually I want to get one for a non-gaming scenario, to replace my aging Toughpad in my boat that I use in conjunction with my depthfinder as a chart plotter/map maker for fishing. The nice thing is it's portability meaning I can hold it in my hand as I use the trolling motor on the front of the boat mirroring my depth finder screen to zero in on fish and structure ...... However I really need Windows to do that although simple mirroring of the finder can be done on Linux but some of my mapmaking software is Windows only

Lets be honest. The Deck should officially be classed as a 9th generation handheld and the Switch as a last gen. Doesn't matter if it's technically a "PC." So was the commodore 64. It's specialized enough to count as a console, has a custom chip, and a competitive price.

Finally someone made a video about this. I was asking under reviews for weeks why nobody was testing the full hardware capabilities. Technically you also can enable the RT features in SteamOS using special flags so that RADV allows you to use them but they are not really optimized yet. However there are driver updates coming already for Mesa so that we will see a significant uplift. I'm actually hyped again seeing this video to finally get my device for development. I definitely want to try out what's possible on the Deck. My assumption is that RT shadows are no issue at all since you can even use RT extensions with Mesa on GPUs which don't even have hardware acceleration for it and I had no problems using them for AO on a RX 5700 in 1440p. So I would say that's something to look forward to (Shadow of the Tomb Raider for example shouldn't be an issue with RT shadows once RADV is optimized). The fact that GI is already no huge issue in Metro Exodus on Windows makes me really optimistic. I would really like to see RT reflections in a big game running smooth. You will probably need some upscaling for this but given that FSR 1.0 is available at the press of a button and FSR 2.0 should get available as source code from AMD with a Vulkan example code to implement it... I guess that will happen eventually.

@PixelShade
@PixelShade 2 жыл бұрын
I think they have done everything they can with the currently available tech. It's not really that more money equals better performance. Rather "how much performance can you fit into a handheld form factor of 5-15W". This will always be less powerful in comparison to a 200W+ consoles or 300W+ PCs. Yet the Steam Deck actually comes really close in terms of games and playability. In Cyberpunk (which is one of the hardest games to run) I have consistent 30fps experience with great settings, running at 8W... (mostly medium/high) This results in 3h20minutes of playtime. at 15W I can get even better quality but in return I only get 1h40minutes of battery life. In the end, there is a physical boundaries of how much performance you can stuff into a handheld device and still retain decent battery life. what the Steam Deck is currently doing is pretty much a miracle.
@NL0Gwenster
@NL0Gwenster 2 жыл бұрын
More performance isn't a problem. I'm sure the APU could do more if it wasn't capped to 15 watts for example. But your battery life would be like 1 hour. As it's already 2 hours if you use it at max performance. As is the current steam deck ( I've got one since 2 days) is extremely large, and Valve said they stuffed as much battery as they possibly could. So really we need better battery tech for more power enhancements in our hardware

Not sure why under Windows RTSS can't give you a consistent framepacing with Vsync enabled. Setting the limiter to async, front edge or back edge sync should be able to cap the framerate at whatever you set it to as consistent as gamescope or better as any game could and eventual use of the scanline sync would help if you do get tearing. Only works of course if the performance could exceed the set limit at all times.
