Steam in Romania & Ukraine October 1997

In the late 1990's both Romania and the Ukraine had more or less finished using steam locomotives on their trains, but neither were members of the EU (Ukraine still isn't) and their railways were keen to earn "hard currency" by chartering steam trains to British and other western railway enthusiasts. Enthusiast Holidays, the leading UK railway enthusiast tour operator, took full advantage of this and this video, running for around 1 hour 20 minutes, documents the tour we ran in October 1997 - all sadly now unrepeatable.

Very touching. Local folks, horses and steam. Felt like a time ship brought me back to a harder, dirtier but much warmer world. Thank you for that.

Very glad you liked it. Of course, in 1997 S-VHS was about the best you could get - not up to the HD or indeed 4K standards of today. But like most Eastern European countries, Romania has moved on so virtually none of these scenes could be repeated now.

Many thanks for sharing this rare and beautiful footage. Now, all the romanian standard gauge steamers are out of use and with little chances to be made functional again.

Very glad you liked it. Of course, the quality is not up to today's HD or even 4K standards - but virtually none of the scenes in this video could be repeated today.

@@7822welshsteam No - although the two forestry railways in the north of Romania - Moldovita and Viseu de Sus - are still going, they are pretty much tourist railways now. An in the Ukraine, as far as we know, only that at Haiveron - also a heritage railway now- is likely to survive, whilst the two in the filmdo not, as far as we are aware.

Nice video, unfortunetly steam locomotives are going extinct in Europe, even in my country, neighbour Hungary, we only have like 4 operational standard gauge locomotives left. I know, that they are not used for service but only 4? I am sure people would be happier if every country had some steamers left running for special ocasions.

Steam Heaven I love it you must love steam to understand it it’s magical of days gone bye ..As a kid I use to watch steam trains in the 1960 and never got over them nice Video T Y cheers stay safe ❤️❤️🚂🚂🚂🚂😃😃😃👍👍🚂😃🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺
