Steam Launches Arlette and Mosquito speeding about on Lake Windermere

A bit of video of us on Arlette and together with Mosquito playing about on Lake Windermere during an informal rally in May 2012.
Arlette is a 31ft long recreation of a Victorian small steam launch, fitted with an 1870's design Thornycroft 9hp single cylinder steam engine and loco type boiler.
Mosquito is a 46ft long recreation of a Edwardian fast launch, with compound engine and yarrow type boiler.

Whoever designed those hulls really, *REALLY* knew his job. Compare the speed they're moving at with how little wake they leave behind them!

Impressive speed , 20 knots?? I wouldn't sit anywhere near the boiler, she must be stretching he rivets T this speed. Love it.

The camera makes it sound much worse than it is (I need a better one), unless you are sitting by the engine you can't hear mechanical noise, only the sound of water on the hull and the exhaust up the funnel (which is quiet when slow but louder if running fast). Arlette's engine still knocks slightly, as we slowly remove over 100 years of wear. If in good order these boats have no noise from the engine. It's even possible to move off without the passengers realising that they are underway.

There's some great bow wave action!! What was that plume of steamcloud toward the end; funnel blower?

I think it's the whistle, however it's behind the funnel which blocks the sound from reaching the camera. You can slightly hear the whistle over the engine strokes

It's hard to tell.. How loud are these boats really? All you can hear is the engine, and it sounds brutally loud.

They are not as loud as they sound in the video, which will auto-gain. However while near silent from 10ft away, from inside the boat when you are flat out it gets louder if usually still a level you can hold easy conversation.

So much fresh water so much verdant greenery. I live in the American south west where true green is in very short supply and we are, at this time in out tenth year of severe drought. A normal year gives us about 3 inches of the wet. Please help, we are running out of water.
