When removing a spud from a steam radiator, it can happen that the bushing in radiator gets damaged. The faster you try to get the brass spud out, the easier it is to damage the thread in the cast iron bushing.
Luckily the bushings can be replaced. Just make sure you get the right size, and use the largest pipe wrench you have or can afford.
The larger the screws you try to remove the larger the tool you need to use. Muscle will be your friend in this case.
Search Google for "Matco-Norca Black Radiator Bushing" to find them (just an example, you may find other brands too).

Excellent series of videos on radiators.Thank you very much.Couldn't you have used epoxy or JB Weld to repair the threads of the spud?

John Wilson The new bushing was cheap, and is going to last longer. Depending on how deep the cut is in the thread, you could use methods to repair it. But keep in mind that steam is hot and powerful. Eventually it starts leaking if the repair isn't done right.

What did you use for an extension on the 36" wrench? Usually I use some old pipe I have laying around but this wrench end is fat.

Thanks for the instruction. I just had to cut a spud out and noticed that I just so softly cut into the bushing threads. It's a very very mild cut that only makes for a light straight line across the threads. I already dry fit the new spud to make sure it went in tight. I think the new threads of the spud are filling the void. In your experience, does even a very light cut into the bushing threads always mean that the radiator will leak?

Selma Ave very light cut shouldn't matter.

Thanks for your help. I don't think it should hurt either. Just in case, is there a place to get replacement bushings or do you have to salvage from old radiators?

I'm sure you are right.I just have a fear that I won't be able to get the larger spud out or that I damage/crack the radiator in the process

I don't think you would damage the radiator. I removed two bushings from my 82 year old radiators. Yes they were in there for 82 years, and they came loose relatively easy. You just need a large enough pipe wrench with a very long handle. You may need a second heavy person standing on the radiator, but it most likely comes loose easy.

WD-40 works wonders. Use it.

Ezekiel Major I was trying to avoid oil, because I was painting the radiator later. And paint doesn’t stick to oily surfaces. But in general you are right, WD40does the trick, but you have to give it Time to soak in.

Never, ever introduce oil into a steam device. You'll have a devil of a time getting the oil out of the boiler and even a little oil will create foaming inside the boiler.
