FYI: I recently found out that this was a true story. The Shelby characters real life brother (an actor) cried out, how is the boy (baby) ever going to realize just how much he meant to his Mom. So he was encouraged to write the boy a letter to explain it to him. He ended up writing a play about it - "Steel Magnolias". It went from a successful play to the big screen and became one of our most endearing movie.

I know many feel that Sally Field’s performance at the cemetery is the most powerful scene. But to me it’s just after Shelby dies, when the men have left the room, unable to deal with the moment. And M’Lynn just sits on the bed, quietly crying, stroking Shelby’s hand. Beautiful acting by Sally Field. And gut-wrenching.

Sally Field's performance at the funeral when she breaks is top notch acting. I don't think Weazer was an outsider in the group, I think they all loved each other the entire time. I think that's just her role in the friend group.

Twelve years ago I donated a kidney to my younger sister. Thank God everything turned out ok and she is doing great. This movie always gets to me.

The scene where Melin is angry and crying after Shelby’s funeral is so gut wrenching. She literally oozes pain. I cry every time! Until Clarice says to slap Weeza So funny!

This was filmed in Natchitoches, Louisiana, in the 80s. I was a teenager then. I live just minutes away from there. The house that the ladies got their hair done in is now a B&B. Named after the movie. Natchitoches is the oldest city in Louisiana. Yes, even older than New Orleans. We also have a Christmas Festival where there are millions of lights. It is a small town with a very strong and rich history.

I’ve always loved Shelby’s line “I’d rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime I’d nothing special.” This is just a wonderful movie.

My Ryan was on dialysis when I met him... Waiting for a transplant. His siblings and mom all tested, but no one was a close enough match, so he went on the list and waited for a match. He waited a couple of years, but he got the call. That weekend, there were 10 transplants from someone who passed from an accident. Thanks to that lovely soul, They prolonged the lives of so many strangers. We got engaged the following New Year's Eve.. Had 22 years together before he passed in 2020. My uncle played the doctor in this movie. The crew rented he and his wife's home in Natchitoches, LA. during the filming. He's the Doctor 27:38 into the reaction video! He really was a doctor, so was my father so was grandfather on father and mothers side. Really cool to see this part included in the reaction! Thanks and great job!

When filming the scene where Shelby passes, the real mother of the real “Shelby” was there. She said she wanted to be there to see Julia Roberts get up when it was done. It was the ending she never got in life. This movie always makes me a pile of tears every time. Also, anytime you hear them say “parish”, it’s Louisiana. We’re the only state with parishes instead of counties. My best friend and I are Clairie and Ouisa. 😂😂😂 always talkin shit, but we love each other dearly. ❤️😂

The longest 6 hours of my life was in the waiting room while my son had a kidney transplant. None of our family members were a match. An angel from Georgia came 500 miles to donate to my son. I have still never met her, but she is and always will be our hero.

The people who played most of the doctors and nurses in the movie were the real doctors and nurses who cared for Shelby (her real name was Susan). The nurse who turned off the machines was the one who turned off the machines in real life. Shelby/Susan’s mom watched them film that scene so she could watch Julia Roberts get up from the bed after it was over.

Olympia Dukakis played Cher's mom in Moonstruck. Definitely need to watch that one!

That scene at the gravesite, Sally Fields does an incredible performance. Powerful. Makes me cry every time.

Shelby's mom was not happy about the pregnancy because she knew she would lose her daughter if she had a baby. This was a great movie about friendship among women. I'm glad you watched this one.

Dolly Parton’s best movie is “9 to 5” 1980. No sadness in that movie. Just a hilarious classic.

If you recall, in the beauty shop scene where Meline said 'Shelby doesn't like to be fussed over'. That's probably why she didn't say anything at the hospital when something was going wrong. Shelby didn't want to cause others to worry about her...

"Sleeping with the Enemy" - underrated Julia Roberts movie from 90s.

As a (Type 1) diabetic, I can tell you that Shelby's hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) was 100% real. Low blood sugars can either hit fast or slow and it is imperative that it is treated right away. Simple sugars like juice or full-calorie sodas are the best at-home treatments.

This movie just goes to show that a really great movie transcends genres. I mean, even if you don't normally like "chick flicks", you still have to love this movie because it is so great. A great movie of any genre is still great.

Sally Field's performance in the cemetery just kills me every time. I can't get through it without crying. "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion" indeed.

Daryl Hannah, who plays Annelle in this movie, also was in Kill Bill as Elle Driver. I love how the two characters are so different, and she's great to watch in both movies.

I can say, from experience, that Julia’s diabetic low in the salon was spot on. It’s pretty quick and very scary. I believe that Shelby had some other issues that made it worse. Back in the day, they didn’t have the technology like we have now. It was a lot harder to manage the disease. And I’m sure contributed to the kidney disease. This movie is a classic! The cast was amazing! I’m glad you liked it. ❤

Jesus, y’all, I’m a mess over here. This movie gets me every time. 😭 My husband’s one demand for our wedding was to have his groom’s cake be a dead armadillo, lol. Red velvet and cream cheese frosting 🤤It was delicious!

When I saw the play back in the 80's, everybody was sobbing when Shelby died. It's just as powerful onstage. There were no men in the stage production, just the women. Based on a true story.

I'm a grown man, makes me cry every time. Such a funny, sad and perfect film. I'm a type 1 diabetic as well so I resonate with Shelby's character.

I kind of think Jackson pressured Shelby to have a baby because he wanted a boy. That's why Shelby told M'lynn having a baby would help things a lot. She dud want to have a child of her own but she knew she shouldn't. She wanted to keep Jackson happy. Did you notice the only time M'lynn and Drum actually speak to each other is in the hospital when she is reading to Shelby. Then she pushes him away. This was filmed in Natchitoches, Louisiana, pronounced Nag-a-dish. It's a beautiful town.

One of my all time favorite movies. Started as a play in NYC. No men but for the movie they brought them in. If I'm not mistaken the playwright wrote this for his sister. You guys had great insight in this reaction. Its pure Sisterhood, spot on BJ. The friendships are just wonderful. When my husband past away in October I saw this through M'Lyns eyes. I even said I wanted to hit something and 4 days later I got a t-shirt from my friend that said " I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux. I laughed so hard. It's definitely in my top 5 movies. I love the relationship between Louisa (Shirley MacLaine) and Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) - they are hilarious! And Truvy (Dolly Parton) is so very sweet. As someone else said, Sally Field's performance at the cemetery is spectacular. This is a story of beautiful friendships among these women. Real friends will stay with you through the good times and the worst of times.

Weazer had the best insult lines with Drum in this movie. One of the most heart wrenching monologues performed by Sally Field. This movie makes me cry no matter how many times I've seen it. "Git off my bench!"

Another movie like this you guys would like is "Beaches" with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. This movie has a terrific soundtrack and Bette Midler's smash hit song "Wind Beneath My Wings" is also from "Beaches".I really hope you watch this heartfelt film. Superb cast and memorable movie. For Julia Robert's first major role see Mystic Pizza (1988), she is well known for Pretty Woman (1990), and some of my favorites are, Notting Hill (1999), Erin Brokovich (2000), Eat, Pray, Love (2020). Olympia Dukakis was as always wonderful in Moonstruck (1987). Daryl Hannah is a must see in Blade Runner (1982), Splash (1984), Roxanne (1987), Kill Bill Vol.1&2 (2003 & 2004). I think you should react to Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), I believe you would like it. When I think of Tom Skerritt I picture him in Mash (1970), Alien (1979), Top Gun (1986), Contact (1997).

I grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana and this movie was shot not too far from where I lived when I was in high school. You best believe my best friend and I were first in line and sobbed like big babies! It’s such a good movie! 💜

I never miss a KZfaq reaction to this movie if I can help it! My mom showed it to me when I was around 14 and I loved it and always felt very akin to Annelle. About 10 years later I got to play her in the stage play version of Steel Magnolias. It was a magical and gut-wrenching six weeks of performances with a group of amazing women.

This is based on a true story. I have not watched this movie in about 5 years but I watched a little bit of y'all watching it. I lost my 26 year old Daughter to Cancer 4 years ago and it makes movies like this too hard to watch still, maybe forever. I'm glad y'all watched it bc it's a great movie I enjoy your channel and keep coming back.

Another phenomenally beautiful movie to watch is Terms of Endearment, with Shirley McClain, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson.

Yeah....I cried like a baby when I first saw this movie. And I thought that Sally Field should have gotten a Grammy Award for her graveside scene. Lots of Humor and lots of sadness. Great movie! And I liked that Annells character went through several changes throughout the movie. When she met her "Future Husband" at Shelby's Wedding I knew they'd end up together. Shy, outgoing, wild floozy, timid religious woman, to somewhere in between. That they had Annell tell Sally fields character (Shelby's Mom) that they would name the baby "Shelby" if it was a girl....or boy, was sweet. To honor a beautiful life...... because Shelby was so loving and caring...very great storyline. Shelby dying was completely unexpected. And sad. (There was a lady at my church named Nicki who died at age 40 from brain cancer, after getting a double mastectomy from breast cancer. She had Crones disease and many surgeries and her husband Steve was there by her side and took care of her until her last Breath. She was a sweet lady, she invited me and another lady from church to her Wedding....and we both had only been attending the church for a short time. It was nice of her. At her funeral, they had the same man who played the bagpipes at her Wedding, play the bagpipes at her funeral. I barely contained my sobbing. It hit my Soul with sadness. And she had two younger sisters and one younger brother.....and her Brother ended up with the crones disease several years later. A cousin and Uncle had it too. 4 people in the same family. Her brother was unable to come to the funeral, they Zoomed it for him to be there ( I think he was still in the Military and couldn't get leave? Or that's when he started having his health start to fail. Her parents and siblings were devastated. As we all were, her church family. I made Nicki and Steve a Wedding Book, with lace and satin....and white silk roses.... Steve loved her so much, she was his Physical Therapist and after he got better....he pursued her and they ended up married. It was several years after her death before he started dating again, he remarried a few years ago. Nicki would have wanted him to heal and find someone else to share his life. Maybe have children. They didn't have children because of her health. This movie made me think of Them.

Bashful & Blush! This was my mom's favorite movie & this was the first time I saw her crying & then laughing. I was about 11 years old when this came on TV. So this became my favorite movie bc of women's friendship & it was setting in Lafayette, Louisiana! I'm from New Orleans, borned & raised & I enjoyed yall reactions! ❤❤❤

I had a liver transplant & there's always a risk of rejection. Rejection can come on fast, especially if you have other medical issues.

As someone who has a chronic illness myself, i know I down play alot to not freak out my family. Plus I don't want them to treat me differently. I just a couple weeks ago had a scare and now my family is hovering over me. Especially my son. He's only 22, I never wanted this but he found out alot more since his dad passed away a year ago how much I been keeping from them. She didn't want to be fussed over or treated differently. this movie is such a beautiful movie and I so relate to it

The writer of Steel Magnolias had a sister who passed from complications derived from diabetes. I remember it being a play then turned into a movie. Julia had made a splash in an earlier movie but i believe this was her biggest role in a hit movie which def helped launch her career. Dolly was great in 9 to 5 with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. Just a word about Shirley MacLaine ("Weezer", technically spelled "Ouiser"): she came in at the tail-end of Classic Hollywood, a gorgeous redhead with a short haircut. Her first job was working with Alfred Hitchcock. She's done a number of legendary films, including 1983's "Terms of Endearment", which is sort of an earlier version of this movie; there, MacLaine has the mother role. She always played strong-willed independent women, even back in the late 1950s. Good genes in her family: her brother is Warren Beatty, and if you don't know who he is, google him and you'll see what I mean. She's still with us, age 88!

I've always loved this movie. This is the first time I had seen it since my sister had died of DKA (diabetic keto acidosis) in 2020. We had made the heart-wrenching decision to have her taken off the venilator because all of her organs were shutting down. My sister, Lillian Rose, had passed away peacefully six hours later.

I didn't think I'd enjoy this film when it first came out, but it was surprisingly good. What I remember the most is the outstanding scene with Sally Fields at the cemetery articulating her feelings of grief. Brilliant.

I brought 3 USA Today newspapers onto the set everyday while they were filming. Said hello but Dolly was the only one who said anything back. All of the inside scenes were shot in the NSU auditorium. Was cool to see everyday
