Great video, I’ve switched to using steel for all of my live quarry shooting and I am loving it. After pattern testing my gun with some of the different ranges I found two in particular to work best for me and my gun (for pheasants and ducks = hull high pheasant extreme steel and for my pigeon and partridge shooting the eley eco 32g 5’s) I have not looked at lead since. Anyone wondering about how steel will work, start pattern testing, it’s helped me become more confident when using steel shot.

Enjoyed how Nick got more and more "easy" with being filmed as this series of videos progressed. He has a lot of info. to give but eventually pared it down to chunks that a viewer could absorb rather than telling everything he knows. Also became more and more himself which is apparently a good humoured and good natured bloke.

You can load up to 3/4 oz of steel in a 28 bore with TPS wad , but 5/8 oz is more useable as you can keep the speed up to 1400 ft/sec . Tss 18 is deadly in the smaller bores but obviously very expensive

28 bore steel loads in the US are made by Federal, Hevi-Steel (now Federal) and Winchester, so it shouldn't be too hard to do. All are the same payload weight, but offered in these pellet sizes: 17.7 gram 4 = 3.25 mm 6 = 2.79 mm 7 = 2.54 mm 7.5 = 2.413 mm 1300-1350 fps

DO you get, and have you tested Winchester Blind Side? I have used this on ducks and found it excellent and in my humble opinion, better than standard lead. In Canada we are required to use steel on all waterfowl. I have switched all my hunting cartridges to steel, even upland and pheasant. Right now, the sporting, skeet, and trap clubs only allow lead. So that is my only lead shot. And for those sports steel would be less economical at this time.

I don't get why steel cartridges cost about the same or more than normal lead ones, when the material cost for steel shot is significantly lower than that of lead. I've been tempted to consider homeloading steel cartridges for shooting clays, because I go through a load, but unsure of any potential savings. Another great video Jon, but a video on homeloading would love to see that.

The cost of lead vs steel are not of a concern, it might be a couple of penny’s in difference per shell. But the other components coste the same or more.. (I suspect the shot cup is a little more expensive with steel shots as well, but I am not sure) The facilities that prior used to make lead shot shells has to be adjusted or updated to steel shot. Plus the facilities used to make tons after tons of lead shot/pellets will not earn its money anymore. The production and earnings per shell are what costs the money. Try doing the math and see how little difference in price there are in 32 grams of steel vs lead. Kind regards Niklas.

Putting all balastic arguments aside regarding steel vs lead for a moment, has anyone thought about the effect on the meat of said bird? Steel rusts and how long before steel pellets inside a bird does so? I for one would not want to digest rusted shot.
@nickhorten97

In general terms, to rust, soft iron needs air as well as moisture. A pellet lodged in a bird would have one but not the other so any rusting would take much longer than usual.

Steel "works". There is no doubt that the wound/loss rate of game is a lot higher because of it. I would bet that for every bird, duck, or goose we bring home, there is another one dead somewhere that we didn't even know we hit that died hours later. At some point it becomes an ethical question. Sure we could shoot bismuth/tungsten shot (when you can even find it), but that is $5 every time you pull the trigger.

@@nickhorten97 a dove, pheasant, or grouse is a lot different then waterfowl. Waterfowl have tougher feathers and a nice layer of fat. Example: I have shot a few geese past 40 yards with #6 hevi-shot that is 12g/cc which is almost the same weight as lead. When I cleaned them, all my pellets went all the way into the vitals. AND in each of the geese had what looked like #2 and BB steel pellets stuck in their fat from being shot at before. Saying the materials are almost identical is a denial of physics.

I used steel over the last year and stopped as soon as I heard that chambers could be damaged if the cartridge was too short, 2 3/4" in a 3" chamber. The new advice was to use steel cartridges that are the same size as your chambers to avoid damage. Anyone heard or know differently?

Ballistically, steel is inferior in delivering energy. In my experience waterfowling, it can throw you off as the velocity of steel shot requires less leading. Also, IMO it tends to wound FAR more birds than lead. The amount of ducks that I had to finish off when compared to lead is staggering. I understand the environmental arguments when concerning waterfowl, but ethically I really despise using it.

It seems inappropriate to denigrate the Spanish gun barrel steel if it passed superior proof and is thus suitable for a service pressure of 15,258 psi. That service pressure exceeds SAAMI proof pressure for 12 ga shotguns. Am I wrong about this? I think Mr. Horten once mentioned that the Danes routinely shoot standard through Damascus barrels apparently without problems. I might not be inclined to do that but I'm not Danish.

It will be a sad day when steel is all that you can use thousands of fine English shot guns will be put in the scrap bin And yes I have tried steel it wounds a lot of birds and a lot of it kicks like a mule. @@davidholmes7649 there is steel in 28, not sure about uk availability but it'll get there. Bismuth will also drop on price some as demand goes up, and that's fantastic for older guns. There's also hand loading, which is rather easy and solves many problems. Was out hunting geese the other day with steel. Worked just fine. I've also used a mix of steel and tungsten on waterfowl, which worked better than fine. Finally, if you really want to shoot an older gun and want to use steel you can have the barrel lined. Make that 12 a 20 that can handle anything you want to throw at it. I'm getting a set of tubes for an old greener made in 1904, she'll keep hunting long after I am gone.
