Fair warning to potential buyers... I got this chair with the headrest and paid $1400 for it (custom fabric) only to realize that the minimal padding in the seat, while okay for a few hours, was not sufficient once I started working from home and spent all day and much of the evening in it. I found the instructions online for disassembling the seat, took it apart, added an inch of high-density seat foam from the craft store, and now it is super comfortable. Why such a high-end chair has so little padding is baffling.

I wasn't even fortunate enough to make it a few hours. Within 15 minutes of sitting (ordered online, local dealers were only willing to make appointments with commercial account holders), I had intense tailbone/sit bone pain, as though I was perched on a metal bleacher. I'm not a small guy by any stretch, but am still a good 150 lbs under the weight limit for this seat, and am absolutely dumbfounded how anyone on the heavier end of the spectrum could find any comfort in this chair whatsoever. You can easily feel the seat pan through the foam (which was also THINNER around the butt than it was the thigh and knee areas), and what's worse, is that I started to feel a side-to-side rock somewhere in the mechanism itself, not the seat pan, after only 4 full work days. For a chair lauded as one of the most comfortable and well built out there, this was totally unacceptable. For a four-figure chair, I was unwilling to start modifying things within my return window, and had to send it back. It's a shame, as the back and lumbar support were miles ahead of my previous low tier chairs. Unfortunately, I am going to have to take similar gambles on either the Herman Miller or Haworth offerings for round 3 of finding the right WFH chair, and likely at an even higher price point.

@@alexvswrld I had no luck with both the Herman Miller Embody nor the Haworth Fern. I am now auditioning the BTOD Akir. So far I prefer it over the others, but am working through an issue with them regarding the cushion/seat pan which was delivered warped/has a twist to it. It's not perfect, but I've managed to spend a few hours in it consecutively while still getting it dialed in without the searing pain the other seats caused me, and that's despite the defect.

Mine was crooked and had a minimum seat height of 19" (They state 16"). Rather than admit a production error and replace it, they resorted to basically calling me an idiot by saying I can't use a tape measure, took the chair back and refunded my money. HORRIBLE customer support. They simply don't care. I'd rather sit on a kitchen chair than have to deal with them ever again. Great chair if you're lucky enough to get a good one, nightmare experience if you ever have to deal with their representatives. Don't support this behavior, just buy something else.

please do a video on steelcase chairs with fabric vs leather and how it changes the comfort/feel of the chair. thank you. also, i just got a brand new Gesture and wanted to make some points. it's not nearly as firm as people say but its not as comfortable as i had hoped. the seat cushion does not bottom out for me at over 200lbs but it is firm which is incredibly important for lower back pain as soft seats cause me a ton of pain. i find the back great as it moves in and out that not many reviews mention. most mention that it flexes a bit but the movement that out and in is incredible. its always pushing back on your posture. i feel it will correct the slight humpback that i have over time. when i recline and stretch i can literally feel my spine stretch and its really nice. im tempted to try out other chairs but i highly doubt it will be as beneficial as this one is for me personally so i may just keep it and get others second hand if curiosity gets the best of me.

I just got a leather Gesture to replace my POS Staples Hyken and tbh, this thing is killing my lower back. I saw the video that you guys put out about heavy padded seats actually damaging your back, but I'm a sloucher and lean in all directions and fold my legs up, and I'm not sure I made the right choice. It was between this and an Amia. Thinking I should have gone with the Amia.

I bought the leap then returned it and bought the gesture. I'm finding the lumbar in the gesture really digs into your lower back. The seat feels a little thin. I'm not 100% happy with the Gesture but have bought a lumber pillow and additional memory foam seat to try make this chair better.

Sharing for anyone who's about to buy this chair. They are by far the most comfortable and ergonomic chairs I've ever used, I bought two of them for the office. The problem is they are riddled with sound issues (creaking, groaning, cracking) that develop 2-3 months after use, other times just after a few weeks. In 18 months I've had two replacements through Steelcase, a seat replacement, a cylinder replacement because it was dragging on the floor, casters changed because they were making cracking sounds. It's quite baffling that a chair that costs $1,500 AU makes these sounds. A lot of people online experience similar things. The conflict is that the chair is so beautifully designed and comfortable. Just something to keep in mind. Had I known I would experience all these acoustic issues I probably would have opted for something else. It's gotten to the point now where I don't have the energy to keep going through warranty, I had to buy my own silicone lubricant and grease to try and tackle sounds that are too loud to cope with.

i have the steelcase gesture, and i find everything you said were correct (in my opinion). However, i feel like at 7:22 what you say is wrong (partially) : if you adjust the seat depth the minimum you can (it might differ with your body shape, weight, height etc) and the back stop to maximum, you are in a very RIGID and UPRIGHT position, which i find not so much comfortable but perfect for good posture, for ergonomics. I work all day long in my chair, i code, i produce music on this chair, i watch movies etc... I need a chair that gives a good upright posture, and the steelcaste gesture does perfectly well. However, you always need a little bit of backward tilt. to be perfectly upright damages your body.

The lumbar is too aggressive and with no decrease it's a deal breaker. I'm learning that it's a very personal thing. I saw a review saying the x chairs lumbar support is too aggressive but tried it and it's way less aggressive than the gesture and for me the chair is way more comfortable. I do like it overall, however I feel like my butt hurts after sitting in it (before that I had a really really rock hard gaming chair so I'm actually wondering why my butt hurts now with a chair that's definitely not as hard). Also I actually feel like the curve in the back is not 100% in the right spot for me. It would need to be a bit higher. The Headrest is a weird thing for me. I don't hate it, but I also don't love it. Compared to my "gaming Chair head pillow" it's really stiff. And also sometimes adjusts itself while I rest my head at it (which is a no go for a chair that expensive IMO).

@@rageftw Hi :) extra lumbar thing does something, but it's not aggressive. I once sat on one Gesture without (for 1 hour) and on one Gesture with (2 weeks). In my experience while reclining the difference is barely noticable. But while sitting upright, you definitely get much more support with the additional lumbar support. You normally should feel it, moving it up and down. I think I set mine in an incorrectly height. Well, I've decided to buy a Gesture without it. Just because I didn't need to figure out where it belongs + I think it holds the flexible back a little bit... back + I felt it was a plastic on my back. This was not the best feeling. Without the additional lumbar support the chair feels more like a "forget about it" chair. This is nice. And all the steelcase promo material is also without this extension. Sadly in Germany it's not as easy to get a Gesture like in America. We don't have it on Amazon. I will buy it on a office chair website. They offer much cheaper variants if you don't use the configurator. So I choose between two nice configurations. I whish I could Cogent Connect tbh. They only offer pre-builds WITH the additional lumbar support, but because they are nice, they said they will remove it for me, if I make a order note :)

I solved the issue with the Gesture going back when you set the rigidity to max. IE so it is harder to push / sway back whilst in the max upright position. As the Gesture wasn't alone in this, I had to do this on the Embody when testing it as well. However the Embody was worse as when you move the tension rigidity to the max it then is supporting your mid back and has no lumbar support, very odd and poor way of doing it I find. So the Gesture easily wins. I think the only problem I'm finding some reviews say they have a problems with their seat, this seems to actually vary funny enough as people have it at work, with zero problems, then at home they say there is a problem with the seat which makes me think there is a quality control issue with different people getting different variations in the same model chair. Others say it may be when you order the headrest the back and seat changes (for some unknown reason but I cannot confirm this it is just what people are suggesting might be the thing) So not sure if it is different with this or just a QC issue.

🚨*Attention*🚨 ⚡For Everyone's Awareness and for @Steelcase ⚡ Guys, the most important feature in the ergonomic chair is *Forward Tilt* (At least 5 to 7 degrees both *Seat and Back Support Forward Tilt*) If a chair doesn't have a *forward tilt mechanism*, then after sometime you feel all other ergonomics are waste, Forward tilt is very important if you are working on table/desk using your Laptop/System, Writing or Drawing.

Don’t listen to that comment. Forward seat tilt is probably the most overrated ergonomic chair adjustment out there. It is super niche and useless for most people. -RB
