Scott, Pete and Susan have travelled north to the Little Salmon River to catch steelhead drifting soft beads. Scott shares some great tips on how to catch these elusive fish when the water clarity and visibility are low.

It’s very possible. I work up that way doing hvac some, but I make a couple trips there each spring to get my steelhead fix and “if” we get a salmon run I’ll be on the Little River plenty. Been fishing there since I was a kid. Love all that country!

I know steel head and rainbow are the same fish but that was a true rainbow she caught not a steel head. Steelhead are found in lakes
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes, Steelhead are basically trout that go to the ocean. But they don’t live in lakes. The only way they get into lakes is if fish and game transplants them. And in those waters they typically just say any trout over 20” is a steelhead so there’s no mixup in regulations

Hey is there a way to track the pod online? I’ve tried reading the fish and game reports but it’s kinda hard for me to understand

No… It varies every year. It’s water temp, what the cfs flows are and luck! The earlier you get them, the better they are to eat as well. Once it hits mid April, it’s tough to get a decent one for table fare.

@SilhouetteOutdoors

It makes sense, because steelhead have evolved from rainbow trout. Really the only difference is they travel to the ocean and return to the stream they hatched as adults. And the Little Salmon steelies run smaller than most runs. The average fish is about 25 inches long. A 36 incher is a giant in the Little.
@bssaassin1900
@bssaassin1900 2 жыл бұрын
Steelhead are anadromous rainbow trout. Any rainbow trout has the potential to be a steelhead but there is some genetic predisposition and environmental factors that determine whether a trout will make the run or stay put.

You inspired me and my lovie to get out and give it a try it yesterday. No fish but good to see her casting and great weather. Do you think there are still good numbers of fish in the system? Also do fish make it up to upper reaches of the little or the closer to Riggins the better? We are in mccall at the cabin. Awesome content! Thank you for taking the time to make it.

Right on! The season goes til the end of the month and the fish will be in the upper end of the river close to those falls I showed in the intro. I've been told some do make it up the falls as there is a small fish ladder on the opposite side, but not many. Look for them stacked up in those holes below the falls now.

Hi bud New scriber here, what's your opinion on the Sept 1st steelhead season down on the little salmon river this year?? Will it happen?? Appreciate your thoughts, great channel helping & guidance fellow Idaho & other fisherman!! Thank you.
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I have never fished for steelhead anywhere other than Hells Canyon in the fall, that's hunting season for me. But I've heard the fall season is great!! Way less fishermen. The main salmon and hells canyon are suppose to be really good then, never heard of anyone catching them in the Little River during the fall. I would be really surprised to find out that there are any in there by Sept 1st, the water is likely too warm. October is a great month to get after them when the water cools down. But that could be just a well kept secret... Good luck!

@SilhouetteOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Dave Hafner sorry, we don’t have a guides license. And likely chinook fishing will be over by then. As of now fish and game aren’t planning a season on the South Fork at all. And I’ll be surprised if the Little Salmon is open past June 21st.. But I could be wrong. Our salmon runs have been dismal the past two seasons, it’s really a bummer. The salmon returns over Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River are at 61K right now, the 5 year average is 123K and that’s WAY below the ten year. There are other cool fish to get after though! Giant perch in Cascade, sturgeon on the snake river, tons of mountain lakes with cutthroats in the mountains surrounding McCall. Your best bet for a king on the 4th is on the ocean my friend.

Thought I would give an update on salmon fishing here. The Little Salmon has been fairly good, not sure the season will go into July. But they just approved a season starting June 26th on the main Salmon up by Stanley. It's a cool place to fish and the best backdrop of anywhere in the state to fish. Still no word on a South Fork season.... We have our fingers crossed still..

Awesome video! How much weight did you have on this rig??
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, just saw this message. It varies depending on the water flows, hence the reason I use pencil weights in surgical tubing. You can cut it to any weight you choose. I would guess about an ounce that day. The trick is to get the rig to just barely bounce across the bottom without getting snagged up, right on the bottom is where the fish will be.

Hey man i live in boise and fish riggins a big but don’t know if any other steelhead spots besides the clearwater and hell’s canyon. How do i find this spot? And would they be up there this time of year? Thank you and God bless
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
No, you wont find many fish in the Little this early in the year. It's all in the timing and following the pod of fish as they migrate up the river to spawn, starting in early March. My best advice is start in town and slowly hole hop up the river as the season gets later to find the pod of fish. Once you figure out the timing, it's lights out!

@SilhouetteOutdoors

Guys will start doing well on the Little River end of March all the way until May 1st. If you want to keep some to eat, I highly recommend going end of March. They get pretty mushy and white meat the closer it gets to May. Good luck!

what's the point in fishing .. to catch a fish and then release it into the water .. ???🤔
@SilhouetteOutdoors
@SilhouetteOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
It’s more about the experience, the challenge and the fight for us, to just take what we need to eat, it’s a tradition to go north and catch steelhead each spring, and to know we release some to spawn that will bring a return for years to come. It’s a re-newable resource, but if you take too many, they might be gone forever. There are also regulations that once you keep your limit for the day, you have to stop fishing for them. So if you catch and release, you can continue fishing. We honesty just love our steelhead fishing!

If we didn’t have that small rock pool to land them in. I would have busted out the net. It was easier to do a grip ‘n grin and then a quick release without one..
