It guess it took around 8 months, from December 1976 to July 1977, for the creation of Aja. An accomplishment that kinda stands out given the rapid pace of recording, for many classic albums, often completed in one or two days, a week, or on average a month. Fagen and Becker's commitment to crafting a masterpiece is evident in the meticulous testing and selection of every element, including production methods, equipment, and especially the players. They actively sought the right musicians for each song, spending hours testing and selecting until they found the perfect fit. Aja involved nearly 40 musicians in its recording, an extensive process described as "excessive" by many. Despite the extended timeline, I guess the final result paid off the hours and hours of work.

In the musical side pop culture between 1970 and 1980; when there were crossovers from almost every genre’….Steely Dan made one of the biggest and best defined statements for their “niche”. In that decade radio spewed out country rock, bubble gum, hard rock, progressive, TV show themes, folk, “ socially conscious” tunes…..semi-classical/orchestral tracks; all flavors. Steely Dan didn’t change the world or even change the game. But for 99% of the music of their active period - the “shelf life”…… the timelessness of their music stands up better now than all the Top Ten of that era. A sincere, non-delitante love of jazz and a perfectionist approach to recording quality combined to make their works totally listenable even today….45 years after “Aja”….

Cornelius Bumpus -- the man playing that sweet sax solo -- died just 6 months after this performance. He had a heart attack on a flight from New York to Los Angeles, where he was scheduled to perform. The plane made an emergency landing in Iowa, with an ambulance waiting for it on the runway, but Bumpus died a few minutes after landing. Just 58 years old. Gone far too soon but forever memorialized in his music. RIP.

The comments on here tell me that this clip has just recently been (re) posted to youtube. I had the address for a slightly longer version of this exact performance (on the old one there is a few more seconds of Donald Fagen talking, after the song ends, he says "one album after this we did an album called Gaucho"). I was very disappointed when the old clip disappeared YEARS AGO. -- I LOVE this sax solo by Cornelius Bumpus. I think he is the greatest sax player ever and I think this is his best solo. So glad to have this clip back again to listen to Cornelius whenever I really need a lift. And of course, RIP Cornelius Bumpus. We all miss you!! R.I.P. Walter Becker, Ricky Lawson too!
