Disconnecting the battery worked a treat. I only needed to take negative off. You’re a lifesaver.

Happened to me today - in a car park. Googled videos for a solution and yours came up. Went to Kmart to get a socket set and did exactly as you did (I only removed the cable for about 30 Sec though) and it worked straight away. Thanks for saving my day.

Thank you for this simple fix. This happened a lot in my wife's Cruze 2010 SRi-V, and it's most common with the push-start remote that the SRi-V had as standard. She did get the steering pin repaired or replaced after 4-5 years for ~$300. My son has the car now and it got to a point we could not start the car, without this simple fix. The steering lock error has happened once since, but he just managed to start straight after. maybe low voltage in the battery is causing the issue?

Had a similar issue but ours ended up that the steering lock module (the internal solenoid was intermittently seizing) giving it a tap would temperay fix it but once we replaced it havnt had the issue happen again, been over a year now still going well

My 16 Cruze with 1.4 turbo has died on me while driving. I disconnect the battery for about a couple of minutes and now it even won't start! The message indicates that the car doesn't recognize my key asking to put the key in the try holder. It does recognize when I do so but there is message coming about service the power steering and ABS! It did once asking to roll the drivers window up and down. You mentioned something about that very briefly. Could you explain it more?

I have a cruze 2011 turbo. Sometimes while driving the gauges on dash start flipping around and lights come on and stereo turns off then just goes back to normal.

It is a common problem in these cars 2011 to 2015. It is the negative terminal cable, is a GMC problem ,the crimping on that cable doesn't have good connectivity any more after some years . GMC has an extended warranty for this problem here in Canada and the USA, repair free of charge. I just had mine fixed. Symptoms are radio coming on and off, blinkers don't make the click sound, check steering warning lite on dash. And finally car wont start anymore. Regards from Canada

@pandagarage. I have a 2010 holden cruze, was driving one afternoon and car completely died, key locked in ignition and zero power to the car and gear selector locked in park. Key released after a while and was able to be restarted and driven. Next occasion, zero power to vehicle and couldn't even use the key buttons. Manual unlocked worked then same issue as above. No power and key got stuck in barrel once again. Hot water on positive terminal gave power back and could be started and driven. Got me stumped. Any help please. Thankyou

Had the service steering column lock error come up on our car randomly and we then couldn't lock the car. Holden diagnosed it to the drivers side door handle assembly.

I've had the issue three times the whole.time.ive had my 2014 malibu, same solution fixes it but it's such a pain and happens more frequently. Would be great to find a permanent solution instead of having to unhook the battery all the time, currently I've switched to my spare key and I put it in the centre console to tell the car I'm not stealing to so it doesn't lock.

So I'm off to NCAT today in the city, to fight my case against holden and this 2013 cdx 2ltd lemon cruze i got(second hearing in 2 weeks) and i trained it leaving my car parked down the road from station. Came back from the city..get in car, try and start it and it didnt. Electronics work, but start didnt. Just died and locked my break. A lot of watning lights of all sorts came on a few seconds as it tried to start but the just dies, leaving radio and all working. Now i'm no expert, but i think if the battery was dead, the electronics wouldn't work right? But with these cars nowadays, i think the battery is not completely dead but also not strong enough to start it, am i right or would this problem be worse than i think? I have a video recording. Yess, I've had this same issue on my 2011 cruze before, I disconnected and recharged the battery and away it went again. My battery has just died and needs replacing and it has just displayed service column lock system. Definitely a very confused system 🤣

This has happened to me with both my first and second Cruze. They fixed it on the first car and said it had something to do with the driver's side door and or window but now with my second Cruze they want $1025. They will replace the unit and will have to order it in. Not happy!

My Holden Cruze SRI - V 2013 yesterday started fine but no instrument panel lights and power steering wasn't working. Not locked but really heavy.. got AA out ,who said to take it to Holden... I have had steering lock message also. I will get my partner to disconnect the battery to see if this helps me...

I've got a Holden Cruze 2014 SRi-Z that's come up with this problem. It's currently with Holden now. Hopefully they can fix. Have you come across this model encountering the issue?

Hey mate, doubt you'll see this but I have a 2012/2013 Sri-V and I've been getting the service steering column message on the tachometer screen intermittently (maybe 3 times - car has never not started though) but sometimes the little electronic noise the wheel makes when the car starts / engine stops is slower than usual, sometimes it's instant and other times it takes a few seconds. Also wondering whether this might affect the transmission (auto) as I've been having some slow gear-changes sometimes... think I might take it to Holden? Have you had any similar issues?

Chev cruze 1.8. Gives a small crank but wont start. Have to kick start and when she warms up she will crank fine. When she cools down...same story just a small crank.

Ok people, try this , after resetting car with battery off , run a extra earth wire , from body to motor , alternator bolt , to body again . Find all earths on car and re tightened clean them all . Further more if you are keen, go over all electronic connections, clean , and make sure they are in good condition , i also put small amount of electronic grease in and on connections. Very minute amount, with toothpick . Do this at own risk of course. Good luck.

Hi Mate - my wife’s car has the same problem. Tried disconnecting battery for 1 hour but it dint do the trick. As soon as I connect the auto lock theft functionality makes that annoying sound. Will try and leave for couple of hours and again try. Holden cruise SRI. My mechanic once said this is one the worst cars Holden ever made.

My partner has a 2010 cruze. It's been a dud from day one. He paid $15000 for the pos like 3 years ago and now trying to trade it in for a Subaru.. but the cruze is only worth $3000 now. He got ripped off big time with that car especially with all the issues. Hope u got rid of your cruze! Or if not better asap.. or u will be stuck with some expensive problems :/

My wifes Cruze 2012-2013 has been playing up for the last 6 months. steering column service notice, car wont start unless you disconnect battery dashboard flashes on and off radio and gps turn off and on and most Dangerous of all whilst driving the power steering turns off and pulls you to one side while you fight not to hit the gutter what a joke of a car cant wait to get rid and Holden claim this is not a common fault there should be a re-call before someone gets killed but eh thats too exspensive. meanwhile we just keep disconnecting battery until we can trade in.

This happened to me today. After a new attempts of trying to start it, I think it's short circuited the whole car

My root cause was that the Battery was going bad, slooooowly and painfully, and without overt warnings that meant anything... What was happening was that the computer goes into an unrecoverable state, requiring a hard reset. Software tracing was attempted, and no fault found. I tried your method more times that I want to count, and it seemed to help; for a while, before reappearing a small amount of time later, and usually in the most insane places. I ended up keeping a spanner with me in case a hard restart was needed... Monitoring the Batt voltage, over time, I noted that battery charging was inconsistent, Batt voltage was not holding up after cranking the engine over, and in some cases took quite a while to recover, which was not consistent either. Eventually, I did a Batt Load test, and discovered that 1 cell was on the border of being completely SNAFU. The issue being that the Battery was simply dying, and the only thing that was identifying this was the Computer and its lockdown's. Doing a Hard Reset (Disconnect/Wait/Reconnect the Batt) did NOT always clear it, and on occasions it took several attempts to do so, alongside opening and closing Bonnett, open and close Power Windows, leaving driver door open when attempting to turn engine over, and lots of other insane things. The issue that was identified was that the computer was identifying what it interpreted as being a security issue on its data buss, resulting in it going into a lockdown condition, manifesting through Steering Locked warnings and car simply failing to turn over (not even a click of a solenoid)_. This was ultimately caused due to a Low Volt condition occurring. Once the battery was changed over, the computer and Buss security was completely stable. Either way, the Steering lock and I became good friends for a while... 😐 For what it's worth...

I have a problem with my chevy Cruze (Service Power Steering) I did unplugged the battery and still runs the same problem. now I need to buy the Module or the whole Rack & Pinion with module and will cost me more to fix it at the dealer. $5,000 for 2013 Chevy Cruze.
