Steinitz has an even more beautiful and romantic game, played against non other than the legendary Lasker, way after he beat Steinitz as world champion, when Wilhelm was already an old man. Steinitz actually sacrificed a bishop at the beginning of the game, just to get some strategical advantage against Lasker's castling. It's definitely worth seeing.

I believe he is a Croat. Most of the young people on the Balkan speak more than decent English, due to influence from movies, tv shows, video games, and the fact that we start to learn the language since we are 8-9 years old :)

A lot of hate for Steinitz, but some of the biggest legends in the game thought very highly of him. He might have been the guy who made Chess more boring and positional, but if he didn't make positional Chess popular, then someone else definitely would have as a way to counter all of the gambit-heavy romantic styles of the day. He was a great player too, he dominated his opponents and honestly if he had access to the knowledge and everything else that players after him did, I see no reason why he still wouldn't be a great player today. Maybe he wasn't as good as Morphy, though.

3:02 12. Nd2, Nd7 13. Bg3, c5 14. Qxd5+, +7.6 advantage for taking pawn and forking king and rook with control of the most powerful squares on the board. I felt immense pain as you suggested this.

William Steinitz recognized the importance of positional play. Eventually, someone was going to figure it out. Positional and tactical play are both important. Although, according to Kasparov, chess is mainly about tactics and I won't argue with a world champion.

He was quite old and had been the top chess player in the world for about 30 years by the time Lasker managed to dethrone him in 1894. He was a great player who changed Chess forever, ever if his games are considered boring.

I love modern games more and more these days because they are simply better chess. The beauty arose from better chess is supreme than those games that seem a bit beautiful geometrically but in actually fact are just because of the weakness of the players.

It's really hard for me. I think a lot on a move and still do it wrong. I suppose the time will make me better, but I really think that some good books will be really helpful. Thanks advance!
