The most impressive thing about Steinitz is that he was the oldest player to ever win a World Chess Championship at the age of 58. He was also the second oldest at 55, third-oldest at 53, fourth-oldest at 50 but he has to tie that with Botvinnik who was 50 himself.

A great game to revisit time and time again. Of course, the legend of "Von Bardeleben storming out" is one of those classics of chess literature. Great that you took the time to explore it, and the article of Winter (probably the most respected authority in chess history nowadays) is very interesting to put things in full context. Regarding the game itself, it's another of those sad stories in chess in the catalog of "One side didn't castle". Poor Von Bardeleben probably thought that he could hold the position by trading everything and keeping the King on f7. But, it turned out that White's development was overwhelming once the rooks got into the game. A true classic game, and thanks for reuploading it: it is indeed the bravest rook in history.
@PaulDeCamp

Had he castled then Steinitz could have time to make an escape square for his king. And both sides go on. It's a whole different game. Might interesting, might not.
@elasiduo108
@elasiduo108 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulDeCamp Indeed. It was the XIX Century, and the chess principles weren't completely discovered in those days. Von Banderleben was a decent chess player, but he botched the opening. Steinitz, one of the main founders of Modern Chess Theory, grasped the chance and took him to town.

It's brilliant how you study the history of these matches. That's a great story about Steinitz. Btw, "betimes" is archaic, it just means early. The word appears often in the King James version of the Bible & has a bit of a literary feel to it. It's just a little more exact than early, with a slight extra connotation of eagerly, perhaps. Love your videos, I'm catching up on them, only recently having come across your channel.

Agad, "betimes" is archaic English and means before the usual or expected time, or early. So she woke up earlier than usual that morning. And in case you were also wondering what was meant by "I was waiting with a buttonhole, which I pinned on his coat", a buttonhole is a boutonniere, or small flower or bouquet worn by a man in the buttonhole of the lapel of his dinner jacket or coat.

I don't even had to pause the video, I know this game by heart! I love this game, especially the forced continuation (after black resigned) leading to a beautiful mate!

Can you imagine an OTB game taking place on the field where Boston Red Sox fans or Philadelphia Eagles fans can yell "encouragement"? And because they'd be in the centre of the field, it would be perfectly okay to throw beer cans at the contestants, as they would fall short of their targets.

It's 2023 and it's still a beauty and it will always be. First recorded rage quit in chess can be traced way back to 1895.

I know where Steinitz is coming from. In some tournaments that I played, there was an old guy who would keep making slurping sounds constantly throughout the game and was really annoying. When I met him once, I even played a move and resigned because it was so bad. (and because I was out of the money by then as well).

I still like the thrumbnail of the original video with the rook dressed in a superman cape, but this video was pretty good. Thanks for the update. Background information good to know.

I can spot 13 opening variations associated with the players on the player list of the final tournament standings. How many can you find ? thanks for showing it. Who's this Emmanuel Schiffers maybe we can name an opening after him ? Great work.

I know it's a sideline, but at 12:33 instead of trading queens and running away with the knight, you can first play Nxh7+, then trade queens, then Nxf6+, then Nxd5. That'll make the endgame much faster.

So Steinitz outplayed Carl. But Carl outplayed the audience? Teamwork indeed from back in the days when chivalry was not dead! Great stuff as always!

I don’t know how you balance all the communication you must now receive Antonio. Perhaps you could ask KZfaq to fund you some staff? I think they’d agree given the refinement of your channel. I loved this game and think I’m only starting to appreciate the aesthetic of particular tête-à-têtes.
