That is one cool stirling engine! I wonder if this engine design could be powered by focused heat from the sun (using any variation of the old sun light through a magnifying glass method), in place of the clean burning fuel & flame? Though I may just be a google search away from finding out the focused sun light powering method has already long been tried & tested a thousand times...

If this cylinder drive could be weighted more as a flywheel and mounted higher to accommodate the space for the weights, then maybe there could be an inductive heat source. If 6 to 8 of these engines were around a circle and a common inductive heat source, I wonder what the offset would be to make at least enough energy to drive itself plus a pulley system with at least 10-12 pulleys to make any load ratio almost nothing to torque?
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 3 жыл бұрын
You are basically proposing free energy or a perpetual motion device, which is unknown in science. Notwithstanding the above, the connecting rods and master rod are of such light material, any additional (or external) load would cause them early failure. This is not an economical example of a heat engine. Far more energy is consumed by the fire than could be produced by the engine. i.e. If this were in an airplane it would never get off the ground. :-) Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. @@RonaldWalters2010 Engagement is actually how KZfaq's algorithm pushes videos to the top actually, so let me ask you another question if it's not too much trouble. Is there a way to moderate the heat then? Basically I live in Arizona and my energy bill is crazy high. It's hot all the time and one method I've been considering is using a steam engine and fresnel lens to generate power to lower my energy bill. But this seems like it might have more potential, possibly?

I am a Mechanical Engineer and I built my own house and workshops… the house a little over 20 years ago. The metal roof of my house is absolutely perfect for solar cells or solar hot water panels. I looked at several different ways to generate electric with solar panels and the cost just was not justified. The cost of installation is one thing. Pumping the electric back into the grid is another. The electric company here does everything it can to put stumbling blocks in your way. Batteries have a limited life and replacement is expensive. Storms, hail storms, etc. can damage or destroy hot water panels and solar cells. Both need to be washed frequently to keep them clean and generating to max capacity. A layer of dust or smoke drastically reduces their efficiency. I have a video on a radiant heat snowmelt system installed in my sidewalk and driveway. That would not be of interest to you… except possibly in reverse. During the summer the concrete gets incredibly hot. The hot fluid inside the tubing in the concrete could be used to generate electric. Most of these systems work well while the sun is shining, but we (also) need the power when it is not shining. This is another type system that is interesting… and there are other thermoelectric type systems out there… do a Google search. A thermocouple is basically a junction of dissimilar metals which, when heated, generate electric. This is how the thermocouple on the pilot light of a gas hot water heater or furnace works. miriam-english.org/projects/steg/index.html And to be most efficient, the panels should track the sun. Sounds like a government project. Stirling engines are interesting and can be made to run for longer. Way back there was one that was made for farmers, who did not have electric, to run things like water well pumps, milking machines, etc. As a personal way to generate electric to save money, it just isn’t worth it GE made a small unit to generate enough electric to power a tube-type radio and it ran off gasoline or kerosene. When the pocket transistor radio powered by a 9VDC battery came out, that pretty much ended the market for the device before it had a chance to become popular. A google search for Stirling engines (Wikipedia). Stirling engines have been made to power submarines and satellites traveling out through the solar system. Once again, government projects. :-) European countries have had success with people installing solar panels because the governments have largely subsidized their installations. Use of a fresnel lens would most likely also require tracking. Watch this video and set up an experiment for yourself using a pair of binoculars to project the sun onto a piece of paper. This will show you how fast the sun moves. Solar Eclipse Binoculars Projector - Safe Viewing kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpyci9KbzM7XY5c.html Don’t get me wrong… I am not trying to rain on your parade. It boils down to cost vs reward… and how much time do you want to spend fiddling with it. The fewer moving parts the better. Solar panels (electric and/or hot water) are probably your best bet. Vertical-axis helical wind turbines are the best way to generate electric as they automatically track any change in wind direction (again, google search and Wikipedia). Cheers! Ron

Also, ideally this generates more power than the average person would need during the day, and the extra energy is stored the same way that electric companies store energy- batteries or pumping water into a well or compressing air. I understand it wouldn't be very compact to store a well on a backyard, or safe to have compressed air cannisters around, but maybe there is a way to turn the extra power into something else. Batteries maybe? Maybe the air cannisters have potential?

@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 4 жыл бұрын
That is a hard one to answer. Mine ran initially just as you see in the video. Make sure the glass pieces inside the engine are not broken or cracked. Be very very gentle with the glass. Cylinder heads need to be snug but not overly tight, which could break a piece of glass. Silicone tubes properly fitted. The engine should spin very freely by hand without a fire and you should hear all of the displacers clicking just like in my video. If it does not spin freely the support shaft, which holds the radial engine part and the Gatling barrels part onto the center support ring, could be just a bit too tight. After a while my engine quite running altogether and I had to take the hot end apart and clean out a bunch of crap, which should have been cleaned at the factory prior to assembly. If all else fails you may need to look inside. Be careful with the silicone o-rings and try not to damage them. You can find replacements on eBay but then you will need to wait on them to arrive from China (around 3 weeks). One other thing... that glass tube breaking has probably put tiny bits of glass into the crankcase area. So do spin the engine or anything which could break the piston glass tube which currently has no liner to run in or get bits of glass into the silicone tubes leading to the displacer tubes and/or into the bearings. Also, bits of glass (or glass dust) could get up into the other cylinders and break more liners. At some point you will need to take the whole thing apart and flush out the crankcase, cylinders and bearings to make sure all glass particles are gone. I will let you know how I do with obtaining replacement glass tubes.

I have been working with the engine supplier and Banggood and have finally gotten them to produce a repair pack for this engine. It comes with both pieces of glass and two o-rings. Banggood assured me today that this repair pack will be listed fairly soon. As soon as I find out the part number and description I will let you know. Sorry this has taken so long but finally I have results. This is a repair video I made and it shows how bad the breakage can be, the Repair Pack I hope they list on Banggood (with no changes) and replacing a liner on my engine. I will not make this video Public until the Repair Pack is actually listed on Banggood. I had to take the whole engine apart in order to clean out all the broken pieces of glass and glass dust. If the engine is running when the glass breakage occurs, glass particles and glass dust can also end up inside the displacers. I don't think it's irrelevant in with direction it spins since the cooling fan only works in one direction. I assume for tese short runs the cooling fan is totaly unnecessary and over all it is a bad designed cooling fan anyway. More and bigger fins would cool the engine but this fan does near to nothing. Edit: also the shape of the fins is pretty bad. There should be no flat part between the fins on a fan

A lot of the hot end parts for Stirling or Hot Air engines are made out of Pyrex tubes (like test tubes) as they are heat and fire resistant. This engine does not come apart easily and I was not going to pull it apart as long as it was running. But then it quit and I had to take it apart to find the problem. That was when I could verify the displacers were aluminum and not glass as shown in the following video. Gatling Stirling Engine - Hot End Repair kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZqSmbqcxLm3lok.html The pistons and liners are made out of glass tubing which are lapped together to provide a tight seal between the two. They also get quite hot and the heat resistant glass is used along with silicone o-rings. Thanks for watching.
