My Spanish was confined to a semester or three in junior high. All I remember was that our teacher was muy caliente, dressed in leather skirts and jack boots. She drove a Ford Fiesta, lol. Years later, I acquired the textbook on Spanish my mother had used, and it was old when she got it. I looked through it, and almost nothing connected to what I recognized as Spanish. It still has to be satirical or have truth in it; especially for a comic like Colbert whose ENTIRE persona and purpose is using comedy as a way to champion truth. So you can't be dismissive by saying, "It's only a joke." It's not the purpose of HIS jokes. So it was surprising for him to make two "jokes" at O'Rourke's expense that were utterly false on the face of it - and would possibly mislead millions of people who don't know O'Rourke at all.

Personally, I don’t take the Late Show’s opinions (if you can call them that since they’re just jokes playing off the synthesis of the social psyche) seriously. At the moment, there is barely any support for Tulsi compared to the front runners. A joke digging into that perspective is perfectly reasonable and amusing, even if it may turn out untrue. The show’s bias is only reflective of the opinion of the crowd, and most people don’t see Tulsi as a viable candidate at the moment. It’s not practical and certainly not humorous to view every candidate as a potential winner. 2016 wasn’t normal and should never be treated as such. Just because a crazy underdog made it through the slip gates doesn’t mean it will happen next time. There is a perspective that the late shows should be accountable for shaping public opinion, and so should not favor any candidates, but the problem isn’t with the shows, but the people who view them as legitimate news sources.
@patricioansaldi8021
@patricioansaldi8021 5 жыл бұрын
@@CharlieQuartz they're not responsible but de facto they do shape opinion and it is unbecoming to deride people's campaigns despite the facts (ie that 40% of viewers thought gabbard was the strongest in the debate). If they talked positively of gabbard and set her up better, then the same audience would have a positive response to her, but they don't do it cause they are playing political games, which is the problem with the dnc and American voting in general. Trump shows us that an underdog CAN win, and that should give us hope for a brighter future where we have candidates with higher potentials, candidates that actually represent the values of their constituents and the nation at large. I expect the president to do the right thing, not the political thing, and gabbard is a step in the right direction so we should be taking her and others more seriously otherwise we will end up with another political puppet like every other potus. This just shows how the media machine is working together to manipulate opinion and shape our politics, and it is unsightly to say the least.

Patricio Ansaldi I agree that the Late Show failed in underestimating the excitement people had about Tulsi after the debate (which I sympathize with), and that celebrating her success on this stage could have made for an entertaining part of the monologue. I must disagree, though, that the media institutions are working together to alter public perception. I suspect it’s merely the effect of hundreds of writers expressing their own biases and those of the crowd to appeal to their audience. Shows will talk about the candidates that they think most people will like hearing about (whether positively or negatively). It’s like how the MSM talks about Trump. There probably isn’t some conspiracy set up by all the news organizations to talk about him only negatively and shape public opinion, but showing a negative perspective is what each of them thinks their audience wants to see. It’s also easy.

I thought Gabbard and Warren were the only good candidates at this debate. I don’t really like Booker’s approach and I don’t know of any positive plans he has that differentiate him from the other candidates. Castro was the mayor of my city for a few years. His twin brother, Joaquin (a US Congressman) is much more intelligent and eloquent than he is. I wouldn’t trust Julian to run a PTA, let alone the country. I also don’t really care about “the new generation” (I’m in my twenties). An ideal President for all times, I feel, should be in their fifties or sixties. Any younger, they are too naive/hot-headed/inexperienced/immature and much too driven by ill-conceived notions like ideology or the Good. Any older, and they risk being disconnected from the changes in our society and falling to the illnesses of old age. Tulsi and Elizabeth seemed like the most reasonable, committed people in this debate, though I find it hard to forgive Tulsi for her past anti-LGBTQ, but she has the most impressive foreign policy history of any candidate besides Biden, and that is absolutely necessary for the US right now.

@Mike well, they were already there. Saudi Arabia and CIA just armed and trained them. Sunni Islam has centuries of 'extremist' history, especially when threatened by foreign powers. It's not like they listen 100%. IS and Al-Qa'eda both are Saudi products, yet they fight each other, like all the rest of us human factions... It's all one big geopolitical skirmish between Russia and the US and their proxy armies, in countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Israel. A similar thing is happening with China (Vietnam, Japan, the Koreas, etc.). North Korea is to China, what Iran is to Russia (though Islam makes the latter relation a bit different). The odd thing to me is that this never reaches a high level of public awareness. It is in fact sometimes mentioned and even if it is broadcast it get's very little attention - making it less likely to get exposure from the media again. I suppose it's like with Trump... There's not much you can do about it. On top of that it's all quite complicated and interconnected to a bunch of geopolitical organizations, laws, armies, governments, etc. People that grab on to power like madmen, are hardly ever effectively stopped by 'stable geniuses'... You need a combined effort from society, or congress in case of Trump. But that basically only really occurs when shit hits the fan for a majority of the people. I guess US foreign policy is only affected when it hits home, like it did in Vietnam: Growing tired of death with little gain - though you didn't get publicly outraged for getting screwed over in a war that was about China, where napalm, agent orange and cluster bombs were massively deployed. Similar stories for Iraq, Afghanistan, but also Yemen at the moment (fighting Iran proxies, because everyone adapted to that strategy of indirect warfare). Iran is the enemy, but why is Iran no longer Persia? Why did you support one side in Syria, while Russia sided with Assad? And why did Trump change his mind there, also loves Russia, yet still opposes Iran? How come your politicians blindly support Israel and why was Israel created, based on what plan and who where involved in making the plans. When did this occur and why? Isn't it odd that Afghanistan was invaded for Saudi crimes from a 'rogue' mountain area in Afghanistan? Or that Iraq was invaded for WMD that didn't exist? Both countries coincidentally surrounding Iran... Or that Iran keeps shooting US drones that fly over or near Iran (like the sentinel in 2011, which initially was claimed to be flying over Afghanistan)? The answer to such questions is often pretty clear if you ignore the narratives and just look at the actions taken over a period of time. The problem in the middle east isn't a problem at all. It's chaos for profit. Russia now is indeed the product of the USSR bankrupting itself on the US and Saudi led proxy war, or resistance in Afghanistan - mainly by providing them with man-pads in order to close off the airspace to the Soviet forces, which was the beginning of the end. After that the US moved quickly, along with NATO which they basically headed, but now faces a Russia where the strongest thug rose from the ashes. He uses the same strategy of funding, supporting and intervening in politics. Just look at the orange of your President. Greed and pride, I guess. The US keeps creating its own worst enemies.
