Stephen Searle dialed 999 and told the operator that he had killed his wife. He didn't say why, he just calmly confessed and it was up to investigators to figure out the motive.

Part of the abuse pattern is often to tell the victim that they have nowhere to go, because they won't be able to make it on their own. Once you've heard that enough times over years and decades, you start to believe it. Because the first thing the abuser takes away from their victim is their sense of self and the idea that they're worthy of a better life. It's infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time.

“Well it’s just the one of us now” for some reason that sent a chill down my spine. It’s not necessarily how calm he is that’s bothersome, it’s how…comfortable he is. He just killed his wife and now he’s cracking jokes with the dispatcher and asking the police officers how they’re doing. Appalling.

He's proud of it, & showing off - desparately trying be noticed for daring to commit such a heinous act. In his mind he's a daring rebel, standing firm against anyone who dares to cross him.... an anti-hero in his own little mind, no doubt. As he can't comprehend anyone having another perspective, he likely presumes the world also sees him this way... He'd be mortified if he was capable of understanding that actually, others see a cowardly, selfish & egotistical bully with a 'victim' complex, who was so threatened with the mere idea of another humans' autonomy that he destroyed not only her life, but his too. A high price to pay, merely for the sake of avoiding responsibility for his own self-serving actions.

@@SpecialBlanketAutism has nothing to do with lacking empathy in such an extreme way that one feels ok to make a joke after committing a murder. I know many autistic people and my husband is also autistic. None of the autistic people I know would say something so callous. If you're autistic, you should know how often people misaligned autism with lack of empathy. You making this comment is just reinforcing the false idea that autistic people don't have feelings.

The attitude of 'well I'm too old to start again' really crushed me because that is what so many of my female friends in subpar relationships have told me, even though they are only in their early 30s.

And it’s like who cares if she never got married again? She’d be free from control and able to live however she wanted. That sounds like a complete upgrade to me. I want women of all ages to know it is okay to just be alone sometimes. It’d release them from so much. Sorry about the mini rant~

Early 30s?!?! Most of my friendship group didn’t even get married until their early to mid thirties. That’s both crazy and sad that anyone would think they’re too old to start over at that age.

Oh my god, that’s tragic - early 30s is NOTHING. Relationships in your 20s are notoriously garbage, I can’t imagine having only experienced that and thinking “Welp, this is all there is for me, guess I’ll just settle for mediocrity (at best) for the next 40+ years”. 😣

That part hit me deeply as well, because my father has the same opinion of himself thanks to my mother (a long-time emotional abuser to him, my two siblings, and myself). He's wasted 28 years with her and doesn't seem to be willing to leave her until my sister and I are completely financially independent, and has also expressed that he thinks his love life is over as a 60 year old man (despite the fact that numerous people have told him he looks like Pedro Pascal, to the point of some of them asking to have pictures with my dad just to show to their friends.)

To anyone wondering, Gary & Anastasia are still together. She gave a whole shpeal about how she was “disgusted the whole time,” “regretted every meeting immediately after,” “had to shower after sex every time” (which is uh, relatively normal?). Pulled some lame excuse that she was vulnerable at the time cuz her grandmother had just died. Like lady…talk to your husband, get a therapist, cmon. There’s no need to risk your entire family for that. You ask me it’s all bs that she has put up within her own mind to defend herself from the fact that this horrible situation is partially her fault just as it is anyone else who enabled the abuse & didn’t speak up. Idk how Gary can still love the woman, especially given that this is her explanation of the whole thing. I guess that just because Stephen is the clear cut villain here it’s easy for others to blame their actions on him.

Just foundthis piece from a local paper, which sums up UKIP attitudes quite well "Following the verdict, former UKIP politician Bill Mountford told BBC Suffolk he felt "equally sorry" for both Searle and his wife, adding "these things happen". Mr Mountford, who was UKIP group leader on Suffolk County Council when Searle was a councillor, said: "I'm not condoning it in any way but I still regard Steve as fundamentally a decent man who has found himself in circumstances beyond his control."

My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to Ann, her sons, their family and friends. No matter how much attention that we give towards domestic violence, sadly it’ll never end. We NEED to start treating domestic violence as a serious felony, and not some lesser crime. This does include men who are victims of domestic violence! It’s absolutely heartbreaking that Ann, as a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul, thought she was “too old to start all over,” because she wasn’t. She deserved to be treated with respect, dignity, honor, and compassion, but she was treated like a punching bag; physically, mentally and emotionally. I hope that Ann is resting peacefully in her eternal slumber.

same with school "bullying", which is bizarrely not treated as felony assault when it so often is. we have to stop using that word, it's too abstract.

Long time listener first time comment. I've just noticed lately you've left it on the screen. Just not saying it for the crisis line has made me feel better. I work nights at a hotel and when that plays across there I get paranoia that of guests thinking what I am listening too. I just wanted to thank you very much.

@@michellegera8238 NO DUNKINS?! How?! Their friggen slogan is ‘America runs on Dunkin’! I’m a Starbucks girl myself.. I haven’t been that far west but I hear Oregon has many great vegan places which I would like to try. Boston is great. The pizza here in N.E. is my favorite. Come visit again and get some of the food you miss! Enjoy your evening and thanks for the comment.
