What I love in your style is the way you explain art, as a scientist. You stress core principles as if you are pushing people to search more. Amazing teacher.

Thanks so much for this video, detailed and well explained. When I think I have learned a lot, then watch your videos, I realized I will continue learning even more. Excellent presentation! Your guidance and knowledge are very much appreciated. Have you ever work with the Munsell color guide? Blessings and take care.

I still don't understand why academic painters always use such small brushes to fill in bigger spaces, instead of bigger brushes that would do the job just as effectively and quicker. I suspect you must have some reason for it? I posted this question to Cesar Santos but he just said it was "personal preference". I tend to think, however, that it's the way he was trained to paint because it's something one sees many academically trained painters doing.

It gives you better control. Oil painting is somewhat similar to charcoal drawings. One doesn't take a block of charcoal and paint a head do they?... They hatch to bring a tone to their drawing. Same with oils. Hope this answers your question.

@@soumyadipdey426 Correct, I use big brushes only when painting the background or a big area, otherwise, I stick to the smaller brushes. You have more control of what you're doing
@sketchartist1964
@sketchartist1964 2 жыл бұрын
@@soumyadipdey426 Better control? That might be, but when I look at photographs of painters like Sargent or Bouguereau at work, among others of that time, they're holding regular hogs hair bristles. At least that what it looks like to me. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering how the small brush thing started. Bouguereau painted over 800 large paintings, besides many other smaller works, (he painted around twenty pictures per year) and it seems unlikely he would have accomplished it all with tiny brushes. Just sayin'. My guess is he used the medium sized brushes to fill in the larger masses and only used the smaller ones on the details such as hair, eye lashes, or what not, but of course it's just my opinion.

My teachers always told me to use bigger brushes- after school I opted out. I like the visual texture that all the marks make rather than 1 big stroke.

@@stephenbaumanartwork Ok, thanks for that response. I suspected there was some reason for it because so many other painters work that way too.
