Description:
This is a lesson that will prepare you for your (flesh) color sphere painting project. Super important stuff- Color mixing is a whole different ball game (yes, that is a sphere pun).
Full disclosure, these colors are mixed for a caucasian skin type- the same system can be adapted to all skin tones that I have encountered. Time permitting one day I would like to produce a video that explores this topic further.

Seeing you mix the paint and getting the changes that the theory implies will happen is amazing. The concept of memetism in learning really applies here, where monkey sees and thus understands and proceeds to do. Whereas if you show charts and tell people, ain't nobody really get wtf is going on.

Hi Stephen, thank you for great content! In some of the videos you start painting on an already washed or glazed canvas with a similar hue as the brown yellow paint you are using here. Can you please make a video about staining a canvas prior to painting. And of course, are you using that tube for it? Eva

Excellent video. Can you explain why some instructors teach to not mix with black or grays, but instead the compliment to desaturate? I've also heard that black can deaden the mixture and must be used properly, but what does this mean? If you're color matching properly, I don't see why this would be an issue. What would be an improper use of black?
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork Жыл бұрын
It's complicated but the simple version is that desaturating with complimentary colors will tend to lead to a more colorful grey. But really this depends on the color context of the painting. There are no guarantees in either direction- it's about the big picture really.
@ericsnowsucks
@ericsnowsucks Жыл бұрын
@@stephenbaumanartwork Thanks for the response. It sounds like youre saying it's subjective and there's no reason to avoid black if you maybe want a less colorful gray, but using compliments can allow you to more easily modulate how desaturated the color is? With black being cool i guess it would also always cool the mixture.which may not be desirable. Would you use black to paint an object that is locally black?
@sketchartist1964
@sketchartist1964 Жыл бұрын
@@ericsnowsucks I understand Sargent used black all the time. He is quoted as saying he wouldn't know how to paint without black. I suppose each painter finds his own uses for it.

Hey, Stephen! I accidentally bought a large tube of Flake White (instead of my usual Titanium White) and I had such a hard time using it especially when mixing colors. May I ask why you prefer Flake White (at least for this demo) and/or it's pros compared to Titanium White? Thanks in advance :) PS. Thanks for all the great videos
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork 2 жыл бұрын
Transparency and low tinting strength. For some effects this is VERY useful.
@4h844
@4h844 2 жыл бұрын
Use less colour to mix with flake white, less tinting strength = colours tint the white more. (In contrast w/ titanium white).

I use some really cheap paint. I got paint that I can still use from 7 years ago. If stored properly and has a good sealing container it can last. The paint I have is acrylic though, im not sure about oil but I would think it's the same thing
