RLLRRL is one of the most fun to play, most swinging, most grooving rudiment there is, and it is incredibly musical and fun to listen to when played properly. Today we break down how to learn and master this pattern, and we cover all the troubleshooting to help you get this under your belt if you run into any trouble with doubles or paradiddles.

By the way, that gray kit you saw me play briefly there is a Ludwig Breakbeats kit. Super cool kit! Check out this recent video showcasing this kit and comparing it with two others.

Been drumming for over 40 years. I play by ear and was never taught. I am working on this with fingers sticks and snare. Slowly but surely getting faster. Thank you so much for helping me become a much more versatile drummer. Look forward to learning more Chris "B" Heard

Same sticking, but if all notes are the same meter then it’s not a six-stroke but rather this pa-diddle-diddle-ra.

Myself personally prefer to think about this phrase as six stroke roll played in sextuplets

THANK YOU FOR NOT CALLING THIS A SIX-STROKE ROLL! It is indeed a variation on a paradiddle-diddle. A 6-stroke roll is made up of 16th and 32nd notes in this same sticking pattern, NOT evenly spaced notes. Everyone who thinks this is a 6-stroke roll should revisit their list of rudiments and pay special attention to #8, The Six-Stroke Roll. Unfortunately, there are many videos out there calling this a six-stroke roll which adds to the confusion.

As a member of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers and a P.A.S. certified rudimental instructor, this is what we would call a "swiss six". Basically meaning it has a swing to it. its is a six stroke roll. there are 6 strokes.Also, Stephen watch your hands, you tighten up when you do the rudiment on the kit.(and yes, I know and can play all the 40 P.A.S. rudiments and some that aren't on that list...)

@@ts4gv the only difference is accent pattern... A six stroke sticking can be diddles, singles, triplets... Doesn't matter it's all the same just displaced with different accents. I think if they understand that orchestration as a six stroke then it's fine, no?
@silvermineband2719
@silvermineband2719 3 жыл бұрын
@@willyfleming999 Either patterns have a name that means something or they don't. A six-stroke roll is defined a specific way and includes 16th and 32nd notes. Although the sticking pattern is the same, when phrased with even spaced notes, it falls under the paradiddle disciplines.

So, I've looked into this and it's NOT the actual six stroke roll rudiment because the 6 beats are equidistant here. Apparently on the rudiment chart the doubles are played as 16th notes sandwiched in between 2 eighth notes. I have always used it as triplets so...I guess the takeaway here is that you can take any rudiment and assign a TON of different note values to the beats contained within.
@silvermineband2719
@silvermineband2719 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertthompson5568 Actually, it becomes a different rudiment if you change the ratio of the note values. This is true even if the sticking pattern is the same.
