In rural Oklahoma, there's an ongoing conflict between two rival groups: the Greasers, a teen gang, and the Socials. During a fight between Greasers Ponyboy and Johnny, a Social member dies, forcing the boys to go into hiding. Alongside their fellow Greaser friends, including the intense Dallas, Ponyboy and Johnny must face the consequences of their violent lives. Some Greasers strive for redemption, while others meet tragic fates. The movie "The Outsiders," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was released on March 25, 1983, in the USA. It is an adaptation of the book with the same name and was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film earned $33. million at the box office and was edited by Anne Goursaud.

"Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." Fun Fact: In the poster for the film, the Greasers are shown laughing as Johnny is smirking. This was a candid shot, taken during the photo session in which the actors were supposed to look tough at the camera. What happened was that Ralph Macchio quipped "Hey, Leif, that's for the talent." when Leif Garrett went to the table. This comment cracked up the cast and the photo was used. Authentic Battle Damage Fact: In the rumble scene, the first punch is given to Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell). Howell recalls that the hit was real and it knocked him out cold on-set. Breaking Character Fact: When Dallas (Matt Dillon) falls out of his chair at the drive-in, it was completely accidental, and Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) looks briefly at the camera while laughing. Historical Fact: In the scene where Dallas (Matt Dillon) argues with a nurse in the hospital about the whereabouts of his hospital gown, the nurse is played by S.E. Hinton. Hinton began writing the novel that the film is based on when she was only fifteen years old, finished it when she was sixteen, and the book was published when she was seventeen. During filming, Rob Lowe asked S.E. Hinton what happens to Sodapop Curtis. Hinton responded that Sodapop was drafted to Vietnam and died there. The Outsiders House Museum opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 9th, 2019.

The Vietnam thing was just a headcanon idea for Rob Lowe, as S.E Hinton later confirmed on Twitter that it wasn’t what happened to Soda in real life. (Or in the fictional world, you can say.) but those are some interesting facts!!!

I’m 51. I live in the country just outside Tulsa & lived in Tulsa through 5th grade. In 6th grade we moved to a smaller town nearby. I saw my first Drive-in movie when I was seven years old at the very drive-in in the movie & have lived in two small towns they filmed in, in addition to Tulsa. It was a big deal my 6th grade year when the movie came out. We read the book in reading class and then got the “high tech” VHS cart 😂 rolled into class to watch the movie afterwards. We were all very proud of the whole thing and thought we’d really been put on the map. You’ll still here some of us old fogies say “Stay Golden, Ponyboy, stay golden.” 😢

S E wrote several excellent books of this type. She did a great job seeing life through the eyes of a teen male. She slipped a few times with having the characters give female responses. Very few though. edit That Was Then, This Is Now and Tex were also adapted to movies. 3 good movies that were the same as the book. (which is rare) I have to admit, That Was Then, This Is Now kind of pissed me off how it ended. I didn't see the hero she implied. To each his own.

Turned 40 years old, this past weekend. The first Coppola film I had ever seen in my life. Acknowledging this perfect assembly of young actors for it's time. Sure you have many films with great casts. But this one for me was the 'creme de la creme'. The story strikes such a nerve for young men growing up in insurmountable odds. I saw this when I was 3 years old and it's understanding never left me since. Brotherhood with your peers (blood or not) means everything. Btw, I also saw the television series that aired on fox in the 1990s. It was a continuation of the movie and lasted 13 episodes.

The Outsiders is my second favorite movie and my favorite book of all time. Every young person should read or see the Outsiders(This is actually 7th grade and 9th grade reading here in Florida in the 80's & 90's)...the t.v. show wasn't popular, but I liked it(it is set the Summer after Dally's death and we get to see how all the characters are doing. RUMBLE FISH is the sequel to the OUTSIDERS and it's also in book and movie format.

Used to be obsessed with this movie and book as a 14 year old (we read it in reading class) I had a greaser phase where I’d always ask my mom for pomade and I’d slick my hair back and would wear a leather jacket and Levi jeans and boots, even if it was 90 degrees out haha. This version is the novel version. The other version is the theater version. This version shows how good of a friendship between Ponyboy and Johnny friendship a lot more then the theater version. What I liked about this version. But the music they used in the novel version is a lot different. The theater version the musical score is great it adds more emotion, when they do the rumble scene the music is way better. It is more intense goes with the movie. The music when the rumble scene in novel version just doesn't go with the film it is surfer music. You should just watch the rumble scene from the theater version I think you would like that one.

I like the Carmine Coppola score from the original "theatrical" cut, too. While the added scenes in the "Complete Novel" cut are valuable and important, the period rock tunes take me out of the story again and again, suggesting a thousand unrelated associations. I hope that one day the longer cut will be re-released with the original score restored, but until then, I think the best way to enjoy this movie is to read the book first, and then watch both cuts.

Do you remember William Smith as a part Indian, Texas Ranger, in the TV show "Laredo"? In the 60's and 70's the Drive-In was still using the old, big ass speaker's you had to hang off your window. After a while you even know which ones didn't work right, or at all, and park at a good one. Then you had the moron's who would just drive away with the speaker and cord still on the window. That would be me! In the summer we used to lay on the hood, with your back on the windshield, and just enjoy the experience. Current culture doesn't know shit about what a good time is, and there's no turning back the clock. Ask any "millennial" what happened on December 7th, 1941, or on June 6th, 1944. All you'll get is a blank stare!! I'm so glad I'm old, and out of here soon...

75% of the music and score is dif from the original . the corny generic 50s guitar score especially during dramatic scenes like Johnny killing the soc or Dallas dying makes this version almost unwatchable except the deleted and extended scenes here are kinda nice A few years later there was another really good s.e. Hinton adaptation directed by Francis ford coppola again called Rumblefish . Popcorn: I know who that is (convenience store guy) How the hell did you know that the convenience store guy was Conan the Barbarian's dad?! And all these other people... how do you recognize all these people, even when they're in totally obscure roles?

It's weird seeing people react to this version of the movie. I'm so used to the original version so I'm not really sure how I feel about it. The music is very different throughout and more scenes are added that weren't there when I saw this many, many times as a kid. I honestly prefer the original version. Just sayin'

A lot of the music in this version doesn't fit the movie at all. I wish someone would stop FFC from changing all his movies.

In the 1980's, a version of *The Outsiders* including many if not all of the "Complete Novel" scenes, but retaining the original Carmine Coppola musical score, was shown on network television. As far as I know, this version has never been made available on any form of home media.
