You are reminding me of the experience I had some years ago when I bought some ancient Goodmans Magnum K 3-way sealed box speakers with all-paper cones. I had always had modern Kef and Mission speakers but tried retro in another room. The lightness of the paper cones and their sound was a revelation causing me to question what advances had we actually made. The sealed-box bass was so pleasant but obviously not deeply extended.

Kelvin, I've just noticed your channel and recently watched the video on the Sansui AU-101 amplifier. In late 1975, my wife and I bought a small system from a well known Hi-Fi shop in Southampton. It is a Sansui SR-212 turntable, AU-101 amp and a pair of KEF Coda speakers. We still have it, it is used frequently as I managed to retain my vinyl collection through several house moves and it still sounds brilliant !

a Very nice comparison between the Rogers and the Tannoy and not easy at all because they seem really pitched against each other. If I had to choose, I would probably go for the Tannoy because they look fantastic and for what you can see the build quality is superb.

Tannoys are the quintessential British speakers. Unfortunately, some Brits consider them only good enough as PA annunciators at railway stations. Speaking of playing Led Zep on the smaller Tannoy Golds, if I were Andy Johns mixing John Bonham's fat sare to perfection at the middle of the night, I'll probably use these as the ideal monitors. Lastly, Tannoy were the first to highlight pace, rhythm and timing in their loudspeaker designs before Naim. Weird fact - I've yet to hear a bad sounding Tannoy.

I had a pair of these but sent them back after 20mins of listening. For reference my main speakers are a set of Tannoy super red 15s but built onto open baffles rather than the cabinet. I think i was hoping for too much from these. We were looking for something as second system. They sound great but when things got busy (not necessarily loud) the image fell apart and lost all that lovely detail and imaging. If you avoid more complex busy music they are great.

One thing I don't like about them is that the binding posts are in vertical setup. The weight of the speaker cable may pull the top banana plug loose over time. The spade plugs are not easy to hookup with vertical binding posts.

They look like they are meant to be put in corners but I guess they're not with that bass port in the back. Pearl Acoustic Sibelius also have a speaker (driver) like it, but it doesn't have a crossover. Don't know whether that is the case for the Tannoy or not.

50W speakers doesn't mean they are designed for amps rated at max 50W per chanell cause it doesn't working that way. The more power the better. You just dont crank it all the way. When speaker have enough you can hear it with a sound of driver reaching maximum throw and coil make a hit sound. Connect them to a 100W amp and at low level listenig they will sound better than with 20W. Just that simple.

Yes I don’t know the answer to that but what you’re saying wouldn’t surprise me every trick is done to make out things are made in the home country
@scrambaba3 жыл бұрын
That would be surprising bc the label says manufactured in the UK. If portions of a component are made elsewhere the label would say “assembled”.
@donjohnstone37073 жыл бұрын
@@scrambaba It could be the case that the label ''Manufactured in the UK" means the whole item was designed, engineered and assembled in Great Britain but it might not be the case, depending on the type of legal regulations that applied at the time the item was manufactured. There are certainly gaps and loopholes in labeling regulations generally and a decreasing number of products are entirely made from start to finish in the UK, Europe, America, Canada, Australia and other first world countries. Who made what and where has become very complicated, with China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and other third world countries doing much of the engineering and/or assembly of well known brand name products, that may have been designed by companies in their original home countries. Most brands are actually owned by large multinational companies, who simply stick brand names on new generic products that are made in the same big factories from components that may be locally made or sourced from other countries. They often use some design variations to create a range of essentially similar products, for more efficient and cost effective mass production, making them more affordable. It is also common these days for companies in the UK for eg. to make their high quality, high price items in the UK, their mid price items partly at home and partly overseas and cheaper items entirely made overseas. That's the complex modern world of globalised manufacturing and we don't always know what is going on with all the products we see these days and what the labels really mean.
