Looking for a fantastic all-around hat? This is my take on the famous Stetson Open Road! This time in 6x Silverbelly. Most of what you need to know about it, all in one place.
Patreon:

(affiliate link)
stagprovisions.com/pages/sear...
My size: 59cm / 7 3/8" / 23 1/8" / "Large"
CLARIFICATION 12-6-2020: this 6x version is technically not a fedora, as referred to in the video (the “x” designates firm western felt as opposed to the soft felt a fedora would be identified by). The other versions which do not bear the “x” designator are indeed classified as fedoras (soft felt).
Content was not incentivized by Stetson or mentioned vendors in any way. Products were purchased at market value.

Corrections: 1. It's Henry Ford, not John Ford 2. This hat is a western felt, not a fedora (which would be a softer felt such as their Royal Deluxe line) Thank you to the viewers who offered these corrections. Feel free to suggest any other edits that should be clarified.

I enjoy the Content, I'm on the Fence, was going to get a "open road" straw cognac, but they don't have my size, could wait but they have the "Silver belly", and I've been considering one. It looked good on, but thought it looked a little Cream. The light it's under does make a difference. I like the way that looks, kind of grey cream.

It’s a great color! And it goes with everything. Also, it is way easier to keep clean than you might think. It definitely does pick up some spots, but the hat powder repels a ton of grime that would otherwise stick to it.

Hi Jeff, I'm having a hard time deciding between Natural color and Silverbelly color. I have seen neither in person. But I'm just afraid the Silverbelly will be too white for my taste. I prefer it to be a little grey. The Natural color is darker in the pictures which looks better to me, but I notice that the color does not seem uniform in the picture. Is that right?
@MOJONIXION
@MOJONIXION 2 жыл бұрын
@@QVL75 Silver belly is definitely very light but it is not white. If you want to light colored hat but not too light, I would go with a natural. The open road hat style is timeless and a good investment for your wardrobe. I prefer Silver Belly. But that sad I decided to buy both and now I realize I will probably buy the Caribou , and black or navy blue. If you look good in an open road then there’s no reason not to have two or three. Buy one now and budget for another one next fall. Just like a quality pair of boots if you take care of it it will last you for many many years. Pro tip. You can buy cedar chips on Amazon to put in your hat box when storing your hat. This will keep the moths out.

Open Road is NOT a fedora. It is a western hat with a smaller brim. There is a protocol in cowboy hats for real western people, varying by geography, social status and age. The very first Stetsons had this size of brim because they are less likely to get blown off your head. Montana cowboys had small brims initially. Then brims got bigger. Buckaroos in Nevada still have huge brims and flat crowns. As a general rule, older southern punchers in Texas (look it up) revert to an Open Road as they become more distinguished. Same with law enforcement, judges, politicians. A smaller brim rides better in a patrol car or most vehicles; easier to get in and out of. Always silverbelly. Good guys wear light hats, unless they have a big brimmed hat, then you want black. Big brimmed cowboy hats in black are also standard for older gents. Stetson’s El Presidente is standard for big bosses who prefer a larger brimmed hat.

steve robertson ah! Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate the post. The regular Open Road IS a fedora, but not the 6x version that I have- you’re right about that. I’ll change the title of the video and clarify in the description. The video as a whole is still useful to people considering buying the hat and not knowing details of it, but I definitely should have been more accurate on this particular detail and differentiation. Thanks for stopping in👍🏽

True silver belly is the belly of the beaver which is naturally that color. Companies try to imitate that color by dying it and using powder. A custom hat maker will use only the white or silver portion of the belly of the beaver for the true silver belly color.

I ordered a Carson online, and I have a question -- I measured my head and came up with 22” exactly, so I ended up settling for for a 6 7/8 hat since that was the biggest size I could find online, since it seems they don't mass produce the Carson anymore? I could only find one seller on eBay, and then another one on some store's website. So my question is, is 6 7/8 gonna feel tight on me, and will I need to attempt stretching it?
@mblackmon7191
@mblackmon7191 2 жыл бұрын
The Carson is an awesome hat I have a couple of them. Mine has the cattleman crease like the open road. I believe that the Carson isn’t as tight as the open road and you should be ok. You can put a hat stretcher in it but when you sweat on it the leather sweat band conforms to your head and let it dry naturally. What looks awesome on a Carson is if you take it to someone with a trimmer and trim the brim down to 3 inches because it’s bigger than an open road but smaller than a cowboy hat and it’s very much custom to you

It handles the rain fine. It’s dense enough to keep the water out. But it’s not good for the hat. It won’t destroy it, but it will mess up the brim and crown shape a little. A little drizzle is fine, but not more than that. Better to use this in dry weather and buy an all-weather hat for downpours.

Amigo I think that nice hat is a little bit big for you!

Thanks for the opinion! What part is big? The band size? The crown? The brim?

The band size, the hat looks to way low on you, I have a couple open road different color, it looks better wearing bit higher, my personal opinion!

@@josehmoreno7685 oh I see! Yeah, I like it better this way. I feel like it looks funny when the hat is perched up high on someone’s head. But who knows, maybe the look you’re describing will grow on me. Thanks!

@@josehmoreno7685 thanks! I appreciate the input and the kind words! I’ve learned so much from people who have a different perspective than mine. I will try on some other hats next time I buy a hat and see if I like the fit your described. Thanks! 🙏🏽

Wrong , the open road is a western cowboy hat , the Royal Deluxe on the other hand is a fedora hat . The difference is on the felt , the fedora is softer .

Why does every dude wear it the same way. They all look like LBJ 😂. Bring down the brim and you’ll be apart from the mundane pack

What is a modest hat you would reccomend for the sun instead of the open road? I'm looking at the stetson range 6x, but there's no photos online of regular people wearing them.

The Stetson Stratoliner is the go-to for that. Looks amazing on most people, has a smaller brim, and has the more palatable center punch front instead of the more polarizing western low cattlemen’s crease that the Open Road sports as its crown. The Strat comes in Panama straw in addition to the felt version, if you need more of a summer hat, but I live the felt and wear mine even in summer at times.

@@thevintagefuture6567 well I really like the way some of you KZfaqrs are sporting the Open Road, part Fedora, part western. But I wonder if maybe the range 6x is better for me, since I want some sun protection, for walking around town. I'll probably get one and then the other, if I like the whichever one I get first.
