Your videos show patience and passion, that you understand the psyche of your customers and have the patience and generosity to focus on them. Keep up the good work. Kevin, from one hat lover to another: I love these videos man. I'm a southern boy from Texas and I work a job that requires me to wear western hats, so I have a large variety of them. However, the Open Road is what I consider to be my "hat of all hats" and my most prized hat, so much so that I almost feel uncomfortable when I'm wearing a different hat. I have the 6x "harder brim" version in caribou color and another one in black that's shipping in on Saturday. I get nothing but compliments on it and a customer said to me "that hat makes you look like you're in charge." The one shipping in is also the 6x version. I heavily prefer it over the royal deluxe version. I agree that the 6x is the working man's hat as I move around constantly at work. The harder brim also keeps its original shape when I bump it into a wall or drop it. The royal deluxe seems like it's more made for dressing up or to wear for a night out on the town, but they're both beautiful hats and I can't really tell the difference other than the difference in softness. I strongly recommend these hats to anyone that's shopping for a good hat. And you can't go wrong with a Stetson.

Lol they are the same felt, they just have different finishing, maybe fine sanding and less shellac? Lol idk but you can always restiffen a hat and reshape it if it gets distorted

Guess I just got lucky 🍀 I got a Stetson open road 3x beaver Estes tan in 7-1/8 that fits like a glove as the saying goes. Now it’s got some moth bites ( more than I could see in the photos online) yes I watched your video on buying vintage hats and the gamble that it is , however I watched the video too late as I had already purchased the hat . But I came to this realization as I was shaping it up a bit . That in reality I scored a awesome hat , it’s moth bit and slightly discolored around the base of the crown and it gives it a distressed royal deluxe feel. Considering it’s from 50-63 years old and has the original box from Knox hats of New York it’s not a low end 3x beaver either. Has a black sweat band as opposed to the brown, with gold crest and open road written on it. I’m a little self conscious about the height of the crown being closer to 5 inch than the 4-1/4 / 4-1/2 inch height of today. That said my oldest son said it was his favorite and looked the best on me , over my open road straw and Route 66 in mushroom. So I’m going to rock it till I wear it out or it out lives me .

This is actually a throwback. I bought a mid '50's (based on the logo) Open Road Royal Deluxe from an antique store in upstate New York for about 40 bucks. along with the box a few years ago. It has the softer felt and is blocked as as a high crown Stratoliner fedora-- teardrop, pinch in front, snapped down in front and up in back. It is an impressive hat. Per the band, it came from the Wilson Clothing Co. in Rutland VT. I'm guessing that either the original owner or the store decided that here weren't too many Texas cattlemen in Vermont and decided to reblock it.

Hey Kevin: I was a long time Bates fedora wearer, but the hat was lost somewhere overseas. So I bought a Royal Deluxe Open Road per your advice as I wanted a little softer hat as the top of my head is a little taller than is right for the 6x. I also tilt the front of the brim down for the fedora look. I went with silverbelly, as it is a Stetson, you know, and that is THE Stetson color. I also followed your advice and went with a little larger rather than a little smaller. (There is no exact fit for my head.). The Stetson box comes with nice foam padding it it that can be repurposed for making a better fit as you describe. The hat works well when playing my 2007 Gibson 339 or my 1913 Gibson F-4. It makes be a better player. Thanks for the video. You sold a hat for Stetson.

Hey brotha! You’re one of the reasons why I’ve gotten back into wearing my hats again…especially vintage Stetson westerns. I have a newer OR 6x, a OR Deluxe and OR 10x straw, a vintage James Dean edition, a couple of vintage Gun Clubs, and just I just scored a 70’s era OR which has a slightly higher crown slightly curved brim. Keep doing your thang man! Hopefully this Philly cat will make his to your store in the Big Apple. Peace & Chicken Grease!

Well, years ago I was a hopeless workaholic and I was overdosing on caffeine, so I’m a way, u were right, I was drinking way too much coffee and it gave me the jitters, these days I rarely even have one cup of coffee, so I’ve mellowed..

Honestly I think it's the best looking hat around. I like the distinguished look of a cowboy top but I digress a little in that I'm actually not a fan of the big, wavy look of the traditional cowboy hat. That looks too busy and clunky. I prefer the clean, neat look of a straight brim. Pair that with a rustic color like brown or beige? Mmm. That's a good lookin' hat. 😊

Hey Brother! A year later, a follow up: I reshaped the Silverbelly Royal Deluxe Open Road back to the original shape. I have been wearing a straw western had since Memorial Day, but now that Labor Day is past, it's time to go back to felt. I just added another Royal Deluxe Open Road in black to the closet to wear with my black suit. I was told that old guys with gray hair shouldn't wear dark suits, but I like dark suits, so with a black hat, I suppose I can stay with the darker colors. I'll keep wearing the Silverbelly hat when I want to go full-on cowboy. I'm playing my Gibsons and my old beater fiddle I got for free.

You have it, wear what you like, personally the black and the caribou make a firm statement and have a powerful air about them. The cognac is another color that adds a softer touch and goes with anything. 6x times or deluxe they are all great.

I got a Ken from jj's.The top of my head hit the hat was wondering if I should still wear it , because it make a bubble now definitely will wear. Thanks for answering with this video.

That’s natural, it’s almost impossible for the top of the hat NOT to touch your head. BUT..If the hat is sitting very high,then it’s no good, the way to tell is to look at the sides, if the hat is near your ears, touching the ear, or maybe a pinky’s width away from your ear,you’re fine, that’s a perfectly normal fit. But if the hat is positioned really high on your head, like a couple of fingers away from the ears, then u need to make that bubble on top of the crown to allow the hat to sit lower. The Ken is soft, there’s probably no issues there. Your head will soften the top naturally and the bubble will form. Usually it’s an issue with stiff,hard hats like a western hat, the top of the crown is hard like a board, so there’s no way for your head to naturally make the depth it needs, so we steam the bubble crown in. I’d just ignore it, the fact that your head touches the top is a GOOD thing, it allows the hat to stabilize and not blow away, like a tripod, the more legs touch the ground, the more stability u get, same concept..the more areas touch your head, the better it’ll stay on in the wind, Just push the hat down on your head a little, it’ll deepen by itself,

What is it about hats? When I was a kid, the old sitcoms would invariably make some reference to hat shopping/buying as one of a woman’s main pastimes. I always thought “who would care that much about hats”? I get it now.

Like I Love Lucy, she’s always hide her new hats in the closet,and when Ricci Ricardo would discover them she’d say,”what, this ol thing??” Classic! The funny thing is, I get tons of men hiding hats from their wives, they do the exact same thing, they take them home in plain ,unmarked boxes, or try to have us mail the hats and receipts to their workplaces, it’s exactly the same, just flipped around..hilarious😂

So I have a royal deluxe, and now a pure open road. They are both great , but definitely different. The pure is overall a much lighter hat, weight wise, the sweat band is taller, yet thinner and much softer, the liner in the pure is embroidery, not a silkscreen type logo. In the hand they both feel like great hats, just different, the deluxe actually feels smoother, the pure softer, and much lighter weight wise. The differences are slight, as compared to the 6x. The 6x feels like a typical cowboy hat to me. Stiffer , a bit less refined? Perhaps. A more rugged feel. For the same size, 7 1/8, the pure is slightly tighter. I like all three, for different reasons. But still do not own a 6x. Probably take a good sale, to make that happen. Both are grey in color, and gotta admit I actually like the deluxe caribou grey a bit more than the pure phantom grey, the former is a bit darker grey the latter much lighter and a more traditional grey. All that said, the pure being 100% beaver, will probably outlast all the others over time. Just my take.

Hey Kevin! I just received my first Stetson Open Road Deluxe and noticed the Inner satin linear isn't attached to the sweat band it just kind of free floating. I heard this normal and curious why these hats are made that way?

😎 they’re unattached so that when it becomes soiled u can throw it away and replace it with a clean one

First of all they’re never really attached to the sweatband, they’re either held in with a tiny dab of hot glue or just floating free. In older vintage hats they have a few easily removable stitches securing them

I own both in different colors. The 6X version is better for rain or snow. However I have a plastic cover to cover the hats to keep them dry.

Hi Kevin, can you tell me if both the Brims on both hats snap both in the front and back. Also does one hat snap better than the other. You mention wearing them in the snow so can they both handle a little weather without disfiguring the hat. Thank you for the help. Hope you're having a great day.

Weather and rain? VERY bad. On both. I will tell you to definitively avoid rain , especially on the 6x. I don’t even steam them, the steam alone makes the brim curl. Snap on the 6x is atrocious, it has no flange and doesn’t snap most of the time. The Royal deluxe is a little better, i guess. I’d go with that. But no rain,these are some of the worst hats for rain, no rain at all. And no steam at al. They’re both supposed to have a snap in front and back, the 6x comes flat these days with barely any flange or snap at all. The Royal deluxe is a little better felt. I’d avoid the 6x if you’re at all pickup about the snap or brim. You can’t snap a 6x any more, back in the days, they had flanges, these days?..no snap. I’d say the deluxe is a but better w the snap and flange though

So should I go up a size in an open road? I usually wear a 7 1/8 but I noticed a stratoliner I bought recently was a little tight and had to get it stretched slightly. I also have a gun club series stetson that's a 7 1/8 and fits perfectly.

Ok, here’s the deal.. Stetsons are erratic, u never know EXACTLY how they will fit. Most westerns are consistent,like open roads run the same as a Dune or Gun Club, but they all are unpredictable, I can find one that’s too big, and before u get too disappointed, try a second one, a carbon copy,and that one will fit perfectly, or even too small. U never know, that’s why I always suggest going larger when you’re in doubt. Stretching a firm, western hat like a Stetson doesn’t really work, just go large if u Re doing mail order, and tighten the hat to your liking, pad it in back, under the sweatband. How did that stretch work out? Most of the time, they shrink back, I don’t suggest buying tight and stretching, that’s like an old salesman trick,u get home and it feels tight as shit again, big red line on the forehead and it feels horrible. Just go big. I think all Stetsons westerns basically run the same, or are supposed to. and dress hats like a Stratoliner is softer, more flexible, so they tend to run a tiny bit bigger, but.. don’t always count on it. They’re all different,some of them are just way off..it’s been this way for decades.not much u can do but go larger.

The color.. "of the clear one?" I don't understand. You mean what color is the lighter one? It is fawn,like a very light beige or sand color. It also comes in a much lighter shade called silver,which is like eggshell,very light.

Stetson runs accurately, I’m not familiar w Brixton, but u can measure your head, I have videos on how to measure your head, try watching one, it should be helpful. Stetson runs true to size though

I’ve never seen one yet, they haven’t shipped us any felt hats from Stetson in over a year, The deluxe is a softer felt, but it is much more reliable than the 6x version which is thin, stiff and has a bad flange, the brims are never straight. The deluxe is nice, it’s softer, the all beaver one is Stetson responding to too many complaints about felt quality, I’d imagine it’s better,but honestly, I’ve never seen one yet,

I bought one in black but I guess cause im used to 3"+ brims I feel ridiculous in it. Im 5'9" husky and round face and only way it looks ok on me is turning down the brim in the front or both front and back. Or maybe its gotta fit lower idk. just doesnt look as good as other hats on me.

They soften up, like cowboy boots,the break in process takes a while, but if u wear it more,it’ll soften up really nicely.. the more time it spends in storage,the stiffer it feels, the leather sweatband slowly dehydrates from the heat in your home during winter months.. and the more u wear the hat, your body heat and perspiration will actually soften the leather up,making it feel better to you, it’s uncomfortable at first, but after about a year, they feel way,way better.. it’s hard to do if u wear it infrequently, but they always soften up...keep it in the coolest place of the house, away from your radiators and hotter rooms..that’s what makes it feel stiffer.

So, here is a question. Would the 6x be more durable than the royal deluxe? I work in forestry, when I'm not wearing a hard hat I'm wearing a hat hat - I live in the bush 6 months a year, hat is subject to the elements, I'm outside 16 hours a day regardless of weather (5-6 hours a day with a hat hat, 8-12 with a hard hat) - not the ideal situation for any felt hat, but would this be a reasonable assumption? I realise abusing felt hats is heresy to most, but hey, I like good hats and I don't like babying them

The 6x is stiffer and slightly heavier, it'll probably be a little more durable,there is a difference in the felt. The royal deluxe will require less of a break in, and feels a little better to some, the 6x seems more rugged, but they'll both probably be fine, store it in the box, hung up,or upside-down..I'd just get the one u want, they're both rugged, on is more light and flexible maybe, I can't promise either one will hold it's shape, every hat wearer has different habits, but for the most part,they're both similar,the 6x is stiffer,maybe thicker..hard to say.

6x will loose it's shape after enough rain, I was out on a 3 hour walk in light drizzle and it soaked through. Unless you're lucky to get a thicker felted batch maybe but otherwise like Kevin said they're both dress hats but one has more stiffener

Love the look but the deluxe I got has a web looking finish under the liner, I have 2 of the 6x and the finish is much better under the liner.

Urban Style that doesn’t really mean anything, even the finest felt can be rough on one side, it just depends on whether the hatmaker used double sided or single sided hat body, some hat styles come with fancy finishes like velvety velour or sueded finishes, when we buy the raw felt to make the hat, we can buy it already finished, with a velvet or furry finish, or without, depending on whether u want to buff out a fancy finish yourself or not, there’s really no reason to buff out the finish under the lining if nobody ever sees it, it’s usually unfinished there underneath the liner, that’s pretty normal.

@@quadrogong1111 This particular hat hat a thin spot right in the middle of the center dent, I had to spray the hell out of it to stuffing it back up, the the 6x hats I have are 100 % better quality, still use the deluxe as the everyday thrasher, I may just rough it up a tad to give it that distressed look, heck I may even add a little pistol lapel pin, I make them. Lol

Your hat videos are the best out there. Quick question for you. I own a SIlverbelly Stetson Open Road. Love the hat. Reshaped it a bit to make it look more like Raylan Givens Justified style hat and put a leather band on it. Same kind used on that show. Love it so much i want to either order a Sage Royal Deluxe Open Road or a Pure Blue Open Road. The Pure is a bit more money. Could you talk about the Pure a little bit? I understand the Royal Deluxe is softer. How is the Pure line? Hell I may get both the sage and the blue just cause I love the hat so much. By far my favorite.

They were supposed to launch all that pure stuff this year and w covid,barely anything arrived, we never got any, not sure if anyone else did, but I, sorry, I have never seen one or felt one. The Royal deluxe is somewhat softer, yes. And the 6x classic version is very hard, kind of thin and has somewhat of a flat brim.. the beaver/pure one I can’t comment on, because we never got them this year. Maybe 70% of the stetsons we ordered never arrived this year, they’re very behind in shipping and production, and working on a skeleton crew all year, due to covid.. The 6x is hard,the real deluxe is softer but has less of a western feel, the colors look less western.. but the felt is better I. The royal deluxe, I’m not a huge fan of the felt on the 6x open road, it’s okay, but nowhere as nice as the felt on the 6x rancher, totally different..it’s much thinner.

@@quadrogong1111 gocha, thanks, was able to buy both of em. Paid 200 for the Royal Deluxe in Sage and 350 + 25 shipping for the Pure Blue... Now i have the whole line of Open Roads... Only hat I really like. Fedora's make me look like a rabbi or Italian gangster, pure cowboy hats feel pretentious as i'm no cowboy, but the open road is perfect. Not to big and doesn't get in the way when i go shooting at the range.

The 6x is very thin felt, it's overly stiffened and thin.. I'd guess the royal deluxe is a little bit higher grade felt.. who knows? They designed the line to be priced that way, it's all marketing.. they figure out how much each demographic would pay for a hat,price it accordingly.. I'm sure they figured it's somewhat of a finer,softer, more comfortable,every day hat,rather than a western Hat,which is essentially a working hat

Kevin , ok . I've come across a Stetson stratoliner in black ..quick question to be sure . Do they make Them in wool ? I don't think this is wool as it has the white liner and the black leather sweat band . I don't want to make the mistake of getting some rare wool version Hope you are baring up ok ,?

They make these things in wool occasion, the Stratoliner I don’t know about, I know they make a temple and a Whippet wool, never saw a wool Stratoliner, but they have another one that looks exactly like it, has another name, but it’s essentially that.. it’s in their catalog now, go to hatco, then to Stetson fall catalog, u will see it,

If u wear a 7 1/2 in a Como , u will be a 7 3/8 in a Stetson, Borsalino run tight, Stetson runs a little large. Just go down one size from your Como.

It can be done, but it’s hard, I doubt u will get much results. U would need to spay the felt w hairspray, a few coats, let it dry, then steam it real hard and flatten it immediately, lean on it w your ams, or put weights, books on it, use a cloth or bandana first,otherwise the books will leave marks, after its dry u can repeat it,. It won’t be flat, but..flatter,

Teflon, anything exported from California has a sticker if it has one of many hundreds of chemicals on the list, boots,shoes,bags,hats may have the sticker, I researched it, it’s a Teflon coating,basically a liberal California governor made a law where those stickers must be on anything exported from CA, don’t eat the hat or lick it a whole bunch,you’ll be ok, same ol Stetson as always, just an overly liberal CA political thing..

true, they used all these dress hat felt bodies instead of western bodies, which is why they’re softer, but they should have included black and silver belly, that was dumb, agreed .. next winter you’ll see a large expansion of the flat brims, we ordered a lot, maybe we’ll see a few new colors in the royal deluxe open road too

Yes, there’s a whole series of the open road straw.. they come in around late April or may 1, in a light oatmeal color, a darker whiskey color, and chocolate brown

Kevin, do you know what hat Bradley Cooper wore in A Star is Born? I’ve googled it and it always pops up the Stetson Sturgis hat but it’s hard to tell from just pics on the Internet

It’s close,the Sturgis or the Bozeman are cheaper,softer versions of that hat.. they are close. But it’s so,etching older, and probably a Stetson, an older Gun Club series hat, probably discontinued now.. we sell a hat called the Mackenzie that looks a lot like it, so does the Stetson Bozeman,kinda.. it’s an older hat,I think I remember it,looks like the Cetera,but I don’t remember that coming in black. It is a discontinued hat, similar to the Dune, Cetera and Pawnee.. the Pawnee is discontinued and the Cetera comes only in tan, not black.. so I’d say the Stetson Dune is dead on, but would need a band change..it doesn’t have the brown band. ,I think the Bozeman is an ok copy, it’s identical to the sturgis, just newer.. ,but the Mackenzie looks more like it,it’s waterproof too.its made in New Zealand,it’s an incredibly waterproof,rugged hat that lasts forever,rolls up.. it’s not black, it’s dark brown. www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-mackenzie Dune, Bozeman Or Mackenzie would be my suggestions, its definitely discontinued
