Steve was a brilliant jockey, he won me plenty on all those winners he rode for the late great Henry Cecil. I used to love lumping on that Cecil/Cauthen combination! Slip Anchor's derby win was magnificent.

totally agree with you best combo in racing ever, one bookie from the past called me the cecil cauthen bookie basher, here he is again the cecil cauthen bookie basher, loved their newmarket maidens especially in april and may used to get odds prior to betting shop prices golan heights was offered to me 11/10 i snapped his hand off opened 4/7. old vic sandown derby trial 6/4 goes off 4/9 those were the days

@@BradyPires7 Yeah, I remember also Reference Point winning the Derby at 6/4 in 1987. I'd backed it that year at better odds just before it won the Dante. Then it won the King George and the Leger. Amazing rides by Steve in all 3! I think it came 7th or 8th in the Arc but returned lame and was found to have a foot abscess. If not for that I think it would have won the Arc too. It was some horse.

@@Sunburst75 exactly I can recall nearly all those races like it was yesterday, my wife says it's amazing I can remember horse races from nearly 40 years ago but not one thing I say to you 5 mins ago, my reply is that those races interested me😉

One of the greatest to ever sit on a horse. His rides on Slip Anchor and Reference Point in the Epsom Derby are legendary.

That must have been great. Sad about Henry, always up front about his horses chances and seemed such a nice guy. Definitely a legend of the game.

@@Sunburst75 when we met and chatted about horses he used to speak in riddles which was quite funny, I backed brush aside for the derby ante post. One day early in the season I asked Sir Henry when will he run again the reply was I'm young you're young he's young, one day. In 1988 he took me on a private showing of his stables unbelievable the horses the legends that were there. But he was always a gentleman like Steve. He was just such a pleasant guy the best jockey in the world and was always happy when I chatted never ignored his fans. Sandown park one night I met Henry and Charles st George and was saying if old Vic met Michelozzo (st Georges horse) old Vic will win easy as they were talking about running both horses in the same race maybe the king George but Michelozzo went to at Leger instead. St George wouldn't have it and Henry was just laughing, those were the days
