For someone like me who was a kid in the 1980's, when you hear "snooker" you automatically think "Steve Davis". He's a real legend of the game.

Steve Davis had a 41-4 win/loss at the Crucible between 1981 and 1990 world championships. Hendry had a 41-4 win/loss at the Crucible between 1990 and 2000 world championships. 2 incredible records by 2 incredible players.

I was 13 years old in 1978 when Steve turned professional and I grew up watching Steve play. Steve is a brilliant snooker legend who has done so much for the game. Steve knew how to behave like a professional snooker player on and off the table. Steve's record for career tournament wins around the world is just incredible. Steve has such a funny sense of humour as well. I have seen some of his exhibition matches on KZfaq and he is so funny. I hope Steve continues to be in the studio and in the commentary box at snooker tournaments. Brilliant player, fantastic ambassador for snooker, total legend. Thank you, Steve.

The best tactician of the game I've seen. A credit to the sport and his parents. How he hasn't been knighted is beyond me. Good luck Steve, you'll be missed.

Amazing man and amazing snooker player. Simply gold and I always enjoy listening to his commentary post matches .... Ronnie o Sullivan looked up to Steve Davis as his role model and still always pays great tribute and admiration for Steve success even as his life has gone into doing dj's at music festivals

I think that's more to do with Hurricane Higgins rather than Davis.

@@gaywest4298 I think it was both of them. Davis appealed to a lot of people that Higgins didn't. Basically, Steve was the Beatles, Alex was the Rolling Stones.

@@Treviscoe they were both great players in their own way. I a true pro, the other a true showman. Both were great for the game with their contrasting styles. Both legends for different reasons. And steve davis was and still is a snooker legend.

In 1979 I went to a holiday camp in Rhyl..he did an exhibition and I had no idea who he was...he was great..and nice..he gave us autographs : )

I got to play Jim Meadowcroft at Pontins once. Had a drink with him afterwards. He summed it up when he said that Davis, in the early 80s, was so dominant that everyone was scared of playing him. I don't think anyone has matched that aura since... maybe Ronnie at a stretch, or Hendry. But Davis was proper frightening.

Yeah he was like Tiger Woods was in 1999-2004, unbeatable except for maybe one rainy day a year or so. I mean all one gotta do is look at the World Championship in the 1980s, Win, Crucible Curse, Win, Win, RunnerUp, RunnerUp, Win, Win, Win - 8 finals in 9 years, winning 75% of them --> 38-3 record over 9 years, or 38-2 over 8 championships if we forget 1982.

A true sporting hero and I will never forget the days when he ruled the world and people funny but true switched the tv over because they new if steve pottered a ball he wasn't going to miss lol..Bless him thankyou for all steve Davis gave in the 80ts..

Did you know he was the first to just sip water + no smoking during games? And in fact John Virgo said in an interview that "they were all curious about this new player who didn't stay late drinking with the boys, didn't smoke or drink & no girls". I think that also won him the image of the "good son" and "family man". Doesn't time fly :"-(

He said himself that not only was it his style to go for results, but Barry Hearn told him to do so, and be Steve "No nickname" Davis, as there was a metric ton of sponsors in the clean image which he could then take full advantage of.

Definitely in the top 20 of all time since 1990 when he was still #1in the world, Until he lost the semi final of the world championship to James Warren White 14_16. And as a consequence lost his world #1 spot to Stephen. But Steve Davis is the greatest ambassador in snooker. He's definitely not the greatest like Shaun Murphy says. But when we look at all the tremendous champions since 1990. I would put Steve Davis at #20 on the all time list of greats since 1990.

Every pro I’ve ever seen and met are so kind and humble and have great personalities. Most of the players and people I meet in clubs aren’t as friendly.

@@a.tanner8524 Exactly. I’ve seen in many times regulars getting envious of the talented kid in the club who has potential. It’s not right, some people just need to accept that if they ain’t good enough than that’s no one else’s fault but their own.

@@a.tanner8524 It is but those players would never get anywhere without the hard work on the practice table, and you get that a lot in snooker clubs the one that works harder than everyone else makes improvements, so instead of some players being jealous of others you just have to put the work in yourselves.

Lots of people talk about whether or not “Steve Davis in his prime” might wallop or not modern players. Steve Davis was the pioneer of the modern professional player; he was the first to truly professionalise consistent precision, percentage play, cool demeanour at the table and being the “Ice Man” of the felt by creating tension and pressure (i.e. “don’t make a mistake or he’ll punish you because he never makes ‘em...) He is the birth of the modern age of “clean” professionals... he may or not be “as good as...” but he was the first of a new age...

Steve Davis gets a wondetful send off even though hadn't won the world championships for 26 years. Will Hendry get the same wonderful send off when he decides to retire for good in 2025 without without another world championship title at the Crucible? It was impossible for tte same man to completely dominate in the 2000's, 2010's and now in the 2020's and also without appearing to be under too much aignificant pressure the way it was previouely in either the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's, certainly up until about 1996 anyway.

Mr Davis would never of lived with the great players after his pomp I'm afraid. I watched alot of his best championship wins and he wouldn't of been strong enough for any great player of today. I'm stating a fact. He missed more and he wouldn't of scored heavy enough either.!!

Why wouldn’t he be ? Clothes , tables , cues all better today. Young players have countless hours of material to watch and learn when practicing. Davis was a trail blazer. His cue ball control would still be top 5 today, break building would let him down now but if he was born after hendry changed the game he would have learnt that on the way through. He would be pretty much the same player as mark Selby
