In 1971 at Hayward field in the spring I was in a track meet with Pre but thank God I wasn’t a runner, I threw the discus. I must have thrown against Mac Wilkins that day but I wasn’t in his league but did throw. In my off moments of throwing, I watched this young distance runner, Steve Prefontaine destroy his competition in the 5000 meter. He lapped several runners that day, setting a new American record. I know just where I was standing as he flew by. It was as if there was only one person running that race and he was running after the person in front of him, himself. He left such a mark on me that day in Eugene; I would never give up in my life when it got hard, I would run on guts, like Pre. Thank you Steve, I wish we could have met but at least I was able to see your heart.

Still makes me cry. I used to walk by his house. It was up the hill from Blossom Gulch where I went to elementary school, where he went as well. At the Football stadium, I can remember hanging around refreshment area as a kid where there was a big track meets going on and someone pointing out that Steve passed right through there on his normal run - "a shortcut." I looked at the area like it was sacred. Everything about that stadium and track felt sacred. I think every person from Coos Bay would say that. My grandmother and his mom Elfriede were very good friends. They died within a month of each other in 2013. The inspiration yet sadness never ends. And I never even met him.

"Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run. I like to make people stop and say, 'I've never seen anyone run like that before.' It's more than just a race, it's a style. It's doing something better than anyone else. It's being creative."

I learnt about Prefontaine a few years ago and his attitude to life and running is something I carry with me today. There are no limits. No one can tell you how far you can't go. Go as hard as you can and be the absolute best you can be. Your destiny is exactly that: Yours.

@Richard Milliken in all fairness, he shouldn't have been DWI but it looks like another driver came into his lane coming around a bend. That driver got off because he was the son of a connected doctor in Eugene. The whole investigation is tainted, according to several sources. Pre did like to drink too much, in my opinion.
@shangrila73eldorado
@shangrila73eldorado 3 жыл бұрын
@Richard Milliken not drinking is definitely better for you, but after '72 is when Pre broke all those American records. He dropped Viren in the 2 mile in 1973, and the following year got his time down to 8:18. Some of your drops in time could be attributed to physically maturing, which is what people like Bill Bowerman were saying about Pre. He was just starting to physically mature.

Your attitude and mentality determines your performance. Yes, training, diet, and rest are all extremely important. However, when you’re up on that line, about to race, nothing but positive self belief in yourself will carry you to the end. Having absolute, full belief and confidence in your ability to do your best is the ultimate factor. That’s magical… “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” -Steve Prefontaine

@Richard Milliken My Original comment should have said "In My Opinion" I know all the Runners you have mentioned are world class but they didn't hold a torch in my eyes to the passion that pre brought to Running. Every Sport there comes a "Once in a Life time person who changes everything" Pre in my eyes did that for running. It's just a shame the Regulations and Authorities all changed after he died but thousands of Runners and the Sport benefited as result and life goes on. If Pre had the same level of support and Training Viren had history back then could be different, guess we will never though. Im inspired by the underdog and the individual who shouldnt be able to do what they do.... But they do, that to me makes a difference to the field they are in and the reason they are spoken about long after they are gone with or without Medals. 👊👍

He wanted to run the mile when he first came to Oregon but Bowerman put him in longer distances like 3,000. Pre said that no one watches the 3,000. Bowerman told him give them a reason to watch and that he did. It became the prime event whenever Pre was in the field.

The finalists waited anxiously in the room. Then, five minutes before they were to go out on the track, . . . we realized we were all thinking exactly the same thing - Lasse Viren wasn’t there. Just then, in walks Viren, like the imperial king. Officials checked his hip numbers and his spikes, and then he sat down, all by himself. He put his elbows on his knees and just slowly looked around at everyone in the room, one by one, as if to say, “I’m here guys.” And the race was over then. I’ve never seen a presence like that. --Garry Bjorklund in From Running with the Legends

Watching that 1976 5000 metres finish, I can imagine Prefontaine right in the thick of it, or maybe even a few yards ahead, and this time holding on to the line, as he had been working on his finishing speed throughout 74 and early 75. That would have benefited him in the 76 Olympic year.
