There's a text card that notates it, but it did in fact run into thermal limits with the cooler -- go figure. Thought it would when I looked at it, but hoped they had accounted for an actual Adobe Premiere 100% utilization scenario. Regardless, it's overall good and I'm happy with it -- but I will be swapping the cooler when I have a chance.

Long but related story: Needed a relatively powerful PC for a university hosted research project to drive 6 main OLED TV displays + one console display with a custom 3D app made in Unity. Given that building a PC when every single item over ~$100 has to be okayed with a paper trail due to Uni overhead, I just went with a Puget Systems PC as it was only one invoice to push the paper on. Anyway, the PC was for the time, top end for our use case: 9900k, 64GB RAM, dual 2080 Ti with Nvlink (needed v-sync across cards/displays...) Well little did I know, but one company made a three connector (1 HDMI, 2 DP) 2080 Ti, and it ended up in our build. It wasn't until the PC was delivered did I discover this was even a thing on a top tier GPU in modern times. Quick call to Puget Systems, explaining the situation and they said effectively, "okay, bring the PC by and we'll swap the 2080 Ti cards with four output port cards." Quick 40min drive (gotta love the PNW) and within an hour or so they had the cards swapped out, tested, and I was on my way. Icing on the cake is days after getting the GPUs swapped, my coworker dropped (!!!!) the PC from roughly chest height onto concrete while moving it. The case front panel was f%3c'ed, but due to all the custom bracing on the heatsink, and the GPUs from Puget, nothing else was damaged. The PC still runs great today.

Very happy with Puget, being a Gov contractor I have to use specific vendors but every time I spec out a new system for my group I email Puget and tell them what I'm doing and they give me a short list of areas to concentrate on for our application to make them last 5yrs in a high performance environment. Never steered us wrong despite not making a dime off of us.

I believe this GOV contracting and big business is their real bread and Butter and if you are buying with government money you can bet Psystems will make good for the Gov,,, but as a small time buyer with limited cash these builds are excessively priced. The surprising thing is that Steve paid the price(as far as we know) and the thing did not operate successfully as it comes recommended from Puget Systems. I wanted to do a build with this board for sometime until I realized there were certain drawbacks. Drawbacks ,I might add, that have worsened with the Intel refresh being even hotter than before. I no longer trust ASUS boards.

I'm a 3-time Puget customer at this point and your experience matches the kind of experience I've had each time. I've had minor issues with each machine but it's generally been a good experience with them doing things like pre-wiring GPU cables for me and installing extra fans in the right places as needed. When I had a full system failure out of nowhere they did a quick warranty repair for me at no cost and were able to do some additional maintenance (installing a new SSD and swapping the case) during the warranty repair at-cost. When I've emailed them about the minor issues I have they've been good about providing troubleshooting advice and in one case overnighted me a replacement fan. I can't recommend them to people who are trying to save money since as you mentioned there's a mark-up, but compared to my past experiences with companies like ibuypower you definitely get value for the markup from puget.

@Lishtenbird Жыл бұрын
@@Sgt_SealCluber I honestly do wonder how many of the "better coolers" will have fans that'll last as long as Noctua's, which is sort of a selling point for a system like that. @Sgt_SealCluber
@Sgt_SealCluber Жыл бұрын
@@Lishtenbird You can always replace or upgrade fans on a good cooler with meh fans, but you can't upgrade the size of the cooler on an cooler with a good/best fans. So spending $40-50 on a better performing cooler and replacing the fans with Noctua Redux only puts you in the $70-80 price range, or the same as the under performing cooler that is in the build. Lastly, I think fans these days (minus the complete bottom of the barrel) last a decently long time. I think someone is far more likely to replace fans because of new tech or aesthetics than because they failed, even on $40-50 coolers.
@Lishtenbird
@Lishtenbird Жыл бұрын
@@Sgt_SealCluber Except everything you're talking about only applies to DIY space. If you expect to "replace fans because of aesthetics", you're not getting a solid-panel prebuilt where all of the current (and some of the future) work is included in the price. Not touching the system is literally the point - you even have the option to ignore the "spare parts". Yes, if the cooler is only marginally acceptable on day 1, that's not great, and there should be other options available where you indeed can buy and just straight up start using it at its full potential. But a "cheaper" cooler with unknown QC and unverified long-term reliability, with the caveat of "well, they can just replace the fan later if it fails", is not the solution for a product like this.

To be perfectly honest, I want to recommend them to a friend who is saying cost isn't a problem when he gets his first PC. I love their support and their attention to detail otherwise.
@pearly1789
@pearly1789 Жыл бұрын
Does your friend need a workstation PC? Is it for a hobby or professional work? The premium you pay for with Puget is for the support and warranty. If those things are a concern then self-building isn't really a viable alternative, and if they're not a concern then no reason to look at Puget or any other builder. Even if price isn't a concern, you can always get better parts then, or even 2 PC's for the price. I can't comment on this particular model as I work with completely different solutions from (which are actually much more performance and thermals intensive, I'm not sure why they slacked on this one) but their support is what I pay for. I've had GPU's fail and they send me new ones without having to return the old one first, for instance, which allows me greater uptime.

You probably wouldn't want to 3d print a part like that for the sake of rigidity. Looks like laser cut acrylic to me would be interested what kind of thread is on that (M8?) bolt going into the fin stack or if they drilled out a hole and used a clinch nut or perhaps just slid a thin nut between the fins? Anyway I think it would be a terrible product for them to sell from a support cost and compatibility stand point it makes sense as a nice extra when they control the selection of cooler and case and not over-torquing anything but as a retail product it wouldn't be worth the hassle imho

@evanlagergren8736
@evanlagergren8736 Жыл бұрын
It would be! Unfortunately each motherboard has slightly different CPU socket placement which means that a different CPU brace is needed for each motherboard, and due to it mounting to the case top fan brackets, for each case/motherboard combination. The differences between each isn't large, but even a small difference in the size of the bracing can start flexing the CPU cooler, which both looks bad and can cause bad mounting.
@thirdenvoqation7735
@thirdenvoqation7735 Жыл бұрын
I can remember if it's HP or Dell, but they had similar for their coolers for a limited set of workstation A number of years ago, mostly their dual Xeon configs where the bracket was mounted to the case to reduce stress on the motherboard. Their GPUs (both HP and Dell) have rails on the front of the case to hold the weight of the card and have had this for over a decade now, and something I'd like to see on PCs instead of the ridiculous supports we are getting now.

i bought one from microcenter, the parts werent great but it was built really well. everywhere they went cheap ended up an issue. the all in one cooler was noisey, motherboard wasnt great, and power supply was a 750w. either the power supply or motherboard seemed to like killing cpus since it killed 2 in 18 months (one under warranty around 10 months) and the gpu was a cheap model that was underwhelming but functional

@@bradhaines3142 Im glad you said that. I use to work in the Microcenter service department. The Power Spec PCs were a hit and miss. They had their own brand of power supplies and they had a high failure rate. They would take out components like the motherboard etc. I use to recommend the Prebuilts with the Corsair PSUs. They didn't have problems like the Power Spec PSUs did.

@@gnextras what are the chances that you buy an actual bulldozer, and somehow incorporate it.. would that free you up to finally upgrading? Don't get me wrong, I still have my 4930k on x79.. but that's because it's still good at doing basic tasks.. It's impressive how much work Puget puts into a single build, though like others mentioned, the CPU cooler not being good enough and the bare memory sticks are two things that stood out negatively. I'm curious as to why and a bit surprised that it arrived like that given the apparent high standards they set for themselves.
@sliceofmymind
@sliceofmymind Жыл бұрын
You must be new to enterprise workstations. For a workstation, bare memory sticks are more than sufficient, yes even for DDR5. Puget (and other quality SI's) builds for stability over everything else. Those sticks are likely rated for 4800MT to 5600MT max and likely never reach temps to cause data corruption and/or system instability. Case fans are more than enough to keep them cool.
@evanlagergren8736
@evanlagergren8736 Жыл бұрын
@@sliceofmymind We do run into issues with high-density (128GB) DIMMs on our 8-channel boards, and, depending on the case/rackmount, either add additional top fans or a custom fan bracket to keep temperatures down. But in general, yeah, DDR5 doesn't need additional cooling over bare DIMMs. Our DIMMs are currently 5600 Mbps JEDEC B spec rated (they do cap out at 5200 Mbps on AMD 7000, though) and we don't have issues with lower capacity and density. Heat spreaders can look good, though!

Surprising that one afternoon of building something like this yourself was worth the extra cost/time over getting something slightly unknown. Especially because you know exactly what cases/PSUs/coolers are at the top. Now you'll have to spend time to put the GPU in and replace the cpu cooler anyway.

Well, they wouldn't be my choice for pre-built gaming PCs, but that said, gaming PCs are not their focus. Agreed, not sure what the real story behind this is. It's surprising to me the overlooked it on this one but I wouldn't take that to mean that all their computers are that way. You can always shoot them a message asking about it and/or tell them what you're planning to do with the machine. They have knowledgeable humans that are actually helpful, even the sales guys. If you really need the support and warranty then it's worth the effort to talk to them. If you don't need all that then ofc it doesn't really matter.
