Recently saw Steve Vai on tour with Joe Satriani (his former instructor...who has certainly thought,' you have done well, my son!'), needless to say, it was a fantastic concert! When I need my occasional total metal fix, I like to watch this, so weird and cool! Vai emotes sounds out of the guitar that no one else can! Kind of in a class by himself, in concert, he literally melted my brain with his whammy bar, LOL! But seriously, this tune is a heavy metal/rock masterpiece, it really sounds too cool! You really feel the power!!! Bravo to Steve, you're a total monster!

How does one get such a brutal distortion on bass?
@tommylight1312
@tommylight1312 5 жыл бұрын
@@metalhead532 Well I've got no idea how they did it particularly for this song. But Darkglass makes a lot of great amps and pedals with amazing distortion. Darkglass is becoming one of the top names in bass equipment nowadays and for good reason. Also the EQ settings of how the bass guitar sits in the mix with the other guitars is really important for this kind of tone. It's just something you have to play around with yourself and figure out what works best with your equipment. Search around KZfaq. Hope this helps!

@@metalhead532 lots of bass players use fuzz pedals to get tones like that. The electro Harmonix big muff range of pedals is a common one, especially the Russian type (they're usually called "sovtek"). Honestly just try lots of guitar distortion/overdrive pedals with your bass until you find one you like. And probably having humbucking bass pickups would help as well

What I love most about Vai is his expression on stage. You can see all he's ever wanted to do is play badass guitar and he's kicking arse and knows it. Can see the passion for his art in his face, even covered in gold paint. All the best artists do what they love the most- so many guitarists play but seem robotic, almost like they don't even wanna do it. Vai fucking loves his job.

Love the heaviness of the opening riff and how it was played on slide guitar. The rhythm section just grooves on this track!

It's definitely possible to do both, but unfortunately, exceptionally few guitarists actually do. The thing that sets guys like Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson, and ESPECIALLY EVH apart from all the other shredders is that they have a deep understanding of constructing an interesting melody. Far, far too many shred guitarists focus solely on impressive fretting and picking technique for its own sake. If you slow down something like Eugene's Trick Bag, it's still good musicianship. If you slow down most shred guitar, you just get boring scale exercises.
