He always puts some duck-tape on his neck humbucker (High E string side) to avoid the string from getting under the pickup bobbins when he dives with his tremolo. All of his guitars have that and he write KONX on the tape of some of them, remembering the sound that the high E string makes if it gets under the pickup and he tries to return to pitch..."KONX"

~Thanks for the video! I was not aware that the "GEM" guitar had a sustainer pickup on it! (thought it had PAF Pro's)~ Someone should invent a sustainer pedal, that uses your current humbucker, on any guitar, that works the same way as the Fernandez sustainer pickup! instead of electronics being in the guitar, have everything work through a pedal! that way a person does not have to make internal changes, to their current guitar.

@RaF630 That's the guitars names. EVO is his "main" guitar, so to speak. IIRC, he installed the evolution pickups into that one. FLO is a floral guitar, that he simply painted over white. You could go over to Vais site, and read about the actual guitars. :)

@csg0dlike Well I have and have had plenty of stuff, and can get more than decent sustain, but the attack of the sustainer and the Ebow is something you sadly can't quite emulate, to my knowledge. And I don't want to learn to use an Ebow. But if you have any tip for a sustainer alternative, feel free to tell mme and the world about it, I'll be thrilled.

Mr.V you are awesome ! I didn't think you would care for this sort of thing so I'm a little supprised. I'm talkin about the progression not the melody. 3:20 to 3:34 it bring up things in my mind like the song TIME Can I draw your attention to "The jets - all over him" ? I'm still confused as to why you don't do buckethead type licks , is that a taboo in your universe ? I can tell you it sure sucks not to be able to ask face to face.

Everyone repeats themselves. People find their niche and they stick to it. They stick to it because they have a connection to it and it appeals to them. Clearly we have a different outlook on what the role of a musician is and what a musician's inherent goals should be, so I don't think we're going to agree. I'm not a fan of Malmsteem's at all, but I recognize he has a connection to his music and he sticks to his niche for more reasons than just to hang on to those last few fans he has.

@suncreation66 steve vai is not at all overrated, he uses the whammy bar alot because thats his style, and one of his biggest influences was eddie van halen, u cant overuse the whammy bar, its there to be used......and he isnt a rock guitarist, hes a guitar virtuoso, so he uses the digital effects to add dimention to his music, and despite all the effects and stuff he uses hes a VERY skilled player, and he puts alot of emotion and feeling in his playing.
