I agree, Martin had a few games that blew up his Save average, but he had some big saves late in games to win games too. He suffered when Seattle lost some of their D-men mid-season. But Seattle is paying Gru a lot of $$$$ and he was going to be the man in the last quarter of the season and playoffs. Go Kraken!

It's weird with Martin Jones, that .887 SV% feels a bit misleading, because he had many games last year where he played very well (had 3 shoutouts &, like, 15 other games where he only gave up 1 goal), but he also had a few games where he was utterly terrible, which dragged that number down. As a 3rd choice, he's fine, I guess, he's probably getting claimed tbh, but it's OK for a 3rd option.
@soulessshadow5356
@soulessshadow5356 Жыл бұрын
@scottstenlund4431 I wouldn't have been mad had Dallas picked him up as a 3rd option, but ONLY as a 3rd option/emergency goalie. Swedge and Otter are more than sufficient in net, but we do have Matt Murray as a 3rd which honestly Murray or Jones would be a ok 3rd option. That being said, if I'm Toronto, I wouldn't have signed him because Woll and Sammy are good tendee's and Keith is young and has a lot of room for improvement at only 24. Jones just feels like an unneeded addition.

Goaltending in the NHL is wild. You just never know what kinda performance you’re gonna get from a guy and they rarely get much leash when it comes to getting better when in a rut. And trying to figure out what to pay them and then actually getting that moneys worth is such a crap shoot. Save percentage doesn’t always tell the whole story either. You might make a lot of tough first saves but get scored on cause of bad defensive play on the rebounds

Jones has the most playoff experience compared to Samsonov/Woll. It’s a smart move considering Leaf’s goalies have not been healthy going into the playoffs of late.
@scottpressnail543
@scottpressnail543 Жыл бұрын
This is a good move as it has no bad side to it. Best case scenario for The Leafs is he clears waivers and go to The Marlies. Worst case scenario is he is claimed on waivers. If that happens the team just has to go find another third string goalie. Not easy but not catastrophic. The one-way contract should help as not every team has unlimited cash to spend and some won't want an AHL goalie making that much money.

At first I was wondering what on earth the Leafs were planning. But honestly, he's great depth. He hasn't played for a defensive minded team since LA. So considering he can win you that amount of games with little support means if you have to throw him in a handful of games he makes for a perfect second or third stringer that's more than capable of stealing the odd game. Besides not many teams have two more than viable options for under a million each. So not a bad pickup at all

@thejmichaelk
@thejmichaelk Жыл бұрын
@@TorontoMapleLeafs-yt2xv no, Toronto isn't defensive minded at all. I think they have better defense than the Sharks did when Jones played there, but the Leafs are certainly not defensive stalwarts. What I meant was if he can win you almost twice as many games as he loses while only putting up a .899 save percentage then he'll fit right in in Toronto. Good enough to get the job done, the score is going to be 6 - 4 at the end of the game, but he'll make the saves he needs to. Which for a second or third guy for $800k is pretty good for this team imo

I really don’t understand why people care so much about a third stringer. Worst case scenario you put him on waivers for cap shenanigans and he gets claimed - in which case this doesn’t matter - or he plays for the Marlies, which I have no issues with whatsoever. The tandem is Sammy/Woll, we lost Kallgren and Jones is here to fill the third role. It’s not complicated.

It's important for the Leafs to give themselves more options in net, when they haven't had a legitimate number one goalie since Andersson was between the pipes. The Leafs being a strong puck possession team that limits quality chances means that they can get away with "good enough" goaltending better than most teams, except when they're up against top teams who also have top tier goaltending.

This doesn't surprise me. Treliving said he's liked what he's seen from Woll, but he's seen players, including goalies, have hot runs at the end of seasons who never duplicate it again. So getting Jones fits into his belief that having an experienced goalie to battle Woll isn't bad to go into training camp with. I do believe he'll be placed on waivers before the season starts. I was under the belief he would be claimed but seeing that his NHL & AHL salary will be the same may keep other teams away from him, especially if other goalies are on waivers whose AHL salary is less than his NHL one. He'll definitely be claimed if another team's 1 or 2 goalie gets seriously injured in their camp/pre-season.

I'm kinda surprised it wasn't Jaroslav Halak because for so long I've wanted him to be a Maple Leaf but I digress. So, here is my thinking on this? Jones will be the 1B to start off the NHL season alongside Samsonov while Woll starts in the AHL. I know Woll seems like he has earned that 1B behind Sammy and he has but you can't expect Woll to go into this NHL season and play 30+ GMs as a backup. Samsonov will likely shoulder about 40/48 GMs this season while Jones gets the odd start here and there and maybe tops out at about 15GMs in between the October / November Months in the schedule. Woll will get the reps in the AHL and if he has a repeat performance in the AHL like he did last year then the Leafs front office will know that it will be his time to be called up. Yes, Jones would then be placed on waivers and most likely claimed but if properly done you can give Samsonov rest and still give the team a chance to win on his off days with a serviceable vet goalie and in the meantime, you continue to develop Woll into the ideal, young 1B to Samsonov and then you ride both goalies hopefully to a lengthy playoff run

So let's consider a few things that have not been talked about. I'm not a stats guy so let's consider a few other things . Where exactly did the team finish in the three seasons stretch where his eight percentage was so poor. Exactly what type of emotional status did the goaltender have and what might the emotional set has been had they played they played high level or top level hockey. Suspect that Martin Jones may just be exactly what the doctor ordered.

So lets say he clears waivers so his 875 goes down to the A, that leaves you 2,068,750 over with 13 forwards signed and only 2 forwards with AHL moveable contracts that don't add up to 1.8. So who still has to leave?
@Leafsbetter

I know the numbers are bad but there’s just no way a nearly 30 win goaltender goes through waivers right? not a single team will want a 27 win goalie as a backup?

I like Jones for the Leafs, especially at that cap hit. Their problem in the playoffs for the last ~5 years or so has never been goaltending, they can get by with someone who plays average/above average. Good pickup for what the team needs to be competitive so far.

Though, it has to be said: Jones posted one 4 game losing streak (his only losing streak of more than 2) and multiple winning streaks over three. So he's like.. any other NHL player. He gets streaky. If I were the Leafs, I'd rather have a guy that doesn't get into ruts, who can bounce back after a bad game. They haven't had that in the playoffs, and they desperately need it.

Martin Jones has a month of determination and two weeks of godhood in him. After that he will become as playable as a game of Russian Roulette with 3 loaded chambers. He will have some back to back shutouts for no reason, followed by letting in 4 goals on 13 shots. Rooting for him to shut the Bruins out again tho lol
