Nice video. Regarding Blue Jackets, you can’t call Panarin a bad breakup since he was a UFA. I believe that most Blue Jackets fans will say that Jeff Carter was the worst breakup in franchise history. He is still hated and booed every time he touches the puck at Nationwide. If you look at the Jeff Carter trade tree, Columbus gave up a whole lot (Voracek, and picks that became Courtier and Cousins). Carter had a TERRIBLE attitude from day one and was traded at the trade deadline. He then went on to win two cups with LAK. All the makings of a bad breakup. A second option would be Foote.

Matt Duchene being traded worked wonders for the Avs, maybe Eichel being traded will do the same for Buffalo.

I was playing chel while listening and as soon as I heard Messier the hate instantly came out . I was a huge fan of him back in the day being born and bred in Edmonton and a diehard Oilers fan but what he did to Linden and the Canucks was despicable, he gutted that team.

Jeff Carter for Columbus. That whole situation was ugly. Some Jacket fans would say Jack Johnson and Adam Foote too but I don't seem them as ugly because one went to his original team to retire and the other one was trying to increase his value because his parents screwed him.

The Roy breakup was perhaps the most shocking bust up I'd seen in sports. Tremblay had spent years from the pundits desk saying Roy couldn't tie Dryden's skates. And then he deliberately set about trying to prove himself right. How management ever could have thought him a good idea still escapes me. As far as the Duchene trade goes, at least you didn't say Joe Sakic should be fired, like a certain KZfaq pundit... And my addition: Bobby Smith from the Minnesota North Stars

I don’t remember Panarin being a particularly ugly breakup. He just wanted to live and play in NYC and gave his all for the Jackets while under contract. Jeff Carter who apparently immediately treated the org, city, and teammates with contempt jumps out. It’s rare to have a player arrive and immediately make it clear he thinks he’s better than everyone else and won’t play for the team. Columbus lost Voracek, plus, plus to acquire Carter (the top center they’d never had) and his arrogance and unprofessionalism forced them to trade Carter for Jack Johnson who was at least from the Midwest and not so concerned about his 24/7 access to beaches. Adam Foote would be next. He’s notorious for bagging on the Jackets while captain and secretly instigating his acquisition back to Colorado - he had a private plane waiting to fly him to Denver. Columbus was so desperate for veteran leadership then and while one can understand Carter preferring to live on the beech and Foote wanting to go back to Colorado, it’s the way they handled it that was so low. Kristof Oliwa might be next. He got into a couple ugly fights with then captain Lyle Odelin and was apparently an unhinged unpleasant presence. As soon as he was shipped out, the Jackets new they needed a legit enforcer if nothing else to absorb some of his dirty play and get him off the ice. Thus, the NHL career of a very green Jody Shelley began. Good thing for Columbus. Shelley was not only a match for Oliwa, he of course began a fan-favorite, and is now a sold color guy who’s gotten some national gigs. He’s also regarded as a really nice, down to earth human being. Even Rick Nash was subject to some passing ire from fans after he finally asked to be traded. But it’s hard to blame him: he was a great offensive power forward, but was probably miscast as captain at too young an age and given too little support, both in talent and leadership. But no one really thought Nash was a bad guy. It was clear that with some time he’d be welcomed back to the organization with open arms.

As a jets fan the Dustin Byfuglien situation came out of nowhere and got really ugly. It’s too bad because I really loved his time as a jet.

The Kovalchuk situation was such a dumpster fire where everyone looked bad, and was one of the moments that caused me to sour on Lou Lamarello.

I believe that Jagr leaving Pittsburgh had more to do with money than anything. The Penguins were struggling with cash and could not afford him anymore. There may have been some tension internally with him, but definitely money was a big player.

Getting out of that Kovalchuk contract was a blessing for the Devils. They'd be in even worse shape now with that on the books.

Sundin leaving the Leafs was HILARIOUS and showed exactly how he felt about the franchise. Refused to be a trade deadline rental, became UFA, sat out half the next season, then signed in Vancouver. Classic.

Lots of bits here I didn't know. As a long time NHL fan from the UK it was much harder back in the early 2000s to watch hockey or get news about it. Really interesting about the Ted Lindsay stuff, I didn't know any of that. (Should have a sub list called the Hockey Historian :) ) I think theres already a comment but I remember the Sundin breakup being a big one at the time. The fans didn't necissarily blame him as he wanted to stay a Leaf but he got upset at management tryin to trade him. At any rate, keep up the awesome work

It shows how loyal Detroit is to its players when you have to go back 70 years to list an 'ugly breakups' player, but Lindsay and Detroit were never on bad terms. He was traded by an autocratic Jack Adams to Chicago, on the orders of James Norris and the fans knew it was punishment for organizing the players. Norris and Adams were the hated ones for their union busting and mismanagement. Ted came back to Detroit after 4 years retirement in '64 to finish his career with the Wings and the league (Smythe & Ballard) was mad at him for organizing and denied him a comeback on his terms. Ted was an excellent broadcaster, competent GM, coach, fan favorite, all-around team supporter and tireless fundraiser for charitable causes, especially autism, the rest of his life, and his number 7 will be in the rafters as long as the Wings exist. The man was more than a stud, he was a pioneer to whom every player owes thanks. The documentary "Net Worth" shows the struggles players went through to establish their bargaining rights.

Dadonov is another one that comes to mind. I feel so bad for the guy like imagine not being wanted by your team but you’re forced back cuz of a technicality and then shipped off anyway. That might be the start of more players including Vegas in their no trade lists

The Kovalchuk situation was so weird. As a Flyers fan, I actually felt bad for the Devils. They even let Zach Parise walk so they could afford Kovalchuk. It was an unbelievably bad situation for NJ. And at the same time, I was a big Kovalchuk fan until this happened.

Let's not forget Kovalchuk came out of "retirement". Also NJ was paying him 250k a year for 12 years after he left

It seems like we can get mad at players for leaving pretty much regardless of reason. Like ppl mad at Gaudreau right now for taking less money to go to Columbus asking why not go for money, but then be mad at some other guy who leaves a team only for more money, calling him selfish. This just isnt a sport you can get too attached to players in. Thats a lesson i had to learn way back when i was a kid when Bure left Vancouver. That Roy stuff tho, thats a completely different beast. U probably never see anything like that ever again in your life.

The Sundin exit from Toronto looked like it was going to get ugly. But the guy is too classy and humble for people to have stayed mad at him. His number got retired pretty quickly after he retired. I'm glad it didn't end up being tainted. But I do wish he would have stuck around and or the Leafs offering him a contract after his year in Vancouver.

I don't recall how ugly it was, but when Scotty Bowman took over in Buffalo, one of his first moves was to break up the French Connection line, trading Rene Robert to Colorado for John Van Boxmeer (?) of all people. For the rest of his life Rene had nothing good to say about Scotty Bowman and always said that trade was the reason the Sabres never won a Stanley Cup.

Yashin's final year in Ottawa was fun to watch. Every time he'd score at home, the crowd would cheer (because the Sens scored), then they'd realize who had actually scored the goal (the guy who sat out the entire previous season), and immediately switch to booing.

Dany Heatley with the Trashers came to my mind. While the breakout itself wasn't that ugly, the circonstances that led Heatley requesting a trade in the first place certainly were.

Speaking as a lifelong Flyers fan I can tell you that there were no winners in the Lindros/Flyers drama. For starters, his parents were thorns in Clarke's side since day 1. #2, the issue with Lindros always being hurt is 100% true. He never played a full season. Never got close to playing a full season. The closest he came was only missing 2 games in the shortened season of 1994-95. I'm convinced that if he was healthy in 1999-2000 the Flyers moonwalk their way to the Cup but sadly the season ended choking away a 3-1 series lead and Eric laid out on the ice. That was his last moment as a Flyer. Now, the good news is that the team and Lindros reconciled and he's in the Flyers hall of fame and even has his number retired. If we're counting coaches the way Fred Shero left the Flyers has to be up there.

All The Hockey Guy content is worth watching, but this one was great. Looking forward to seeing a part two to this!

As a Blues fan I remember Hull, Oates and Pronger’s breakups weren’t exactly amicable. Shannahan and Gilmour might be worth a deep dive.

Off the top of my head for another video on messy break-ups: Hoffman/Karlsson & Ottawa - while don’t think anyone ever resented the players instead blaming management, the whole thing was a mess. Fedorov & Detroit - wasn’t the rumour that the was a contract in place and then Detroit tried to change it at the last second? Pronger and Edm - most of the animosity went to his wife but a lot of hurt fans. Dubois & Columbus - though way things are going he’s going to have a few teams with this😅 Richards & LA - seemed LA jumped on an excuse to shed salary getting the NHLPA involved. Could probably also do Kane w/ Winnipeg & Buffalo😅

Good concept for a video. A good concept for a future video would be the restricted free agency arbitration hearings. The obvious one is St. Louis signs Shanahan and loses Stevens. A not so obvious one. Hartford signs Steven Rice, offers Edmonton Robert Kron, but the Oilers get the Whalers just fired coach Pierre McGuire to provide them scouting reports saying Kron wasn’t very good, Edmonton presents that to the hearing ends up with Bryan Marchment.

Has to be Brendan Shanahan with Hartford. He gets voted to start the All Star game while playing in one of the smallest markets in the league then demands a trade before his 2nd season. It wasn't the final nail in the Whalers coffin...its what convinced Karmonos and Bettman they could buy the coffin, the burial plot and the head stone!

Ryan O'Reilly's split with Colorado is worth a look too. Contract hold outs, being looked over for the captaincy in favor of Landeskog, and I remember hearing a number of tantrums before being going to Buffalo.

Being a habs fan in my 20s, I've had the misfortune of watching Marc Bergevin alienate many a player from the team for various reasons. Galchenyuk, Pacioretty, Subban, Radulov, Markov. Andrei Markov leaving for Russia stung a lot.
