What was a video about watching Steven Crowder for a week turned into something far bigger. This starts off with a few quick debunks and then dives deeper into a specific video he made about drag show brunches, and the controversy manufactured around them.
Also, Steven, if you or someone on your team watches this, my DM's are always open.

I remember watching one of his videos where he went to a feminist art show "undercover". He was trying to act like Borat. He was acting like people were going to recognize him and it would be a horrible riot and everyone would burst in flames at his presence. The most hilarious part was nobody gave a fuck he was there, they answered all his little questions and then, as he walked around, he found a postcard or a picture of a topless woman dressed as Jesus on a stripper pole. He freaks out and starts getting loud. Demanding that the people there justify why they are supporting offensive artwork. Hilarious how Crowder was trying to show that feminism makes people emotionally reactive and the only one flipping out and getting offended was Steven.

It's basically just the same logic horror movies use. Showing the monster or villain directly at the beginning of the story usually makes a lot less scary of an experience, as it could break a viewer's suspension of disbelief that the monster or villain's appearance alone is a threat. Obscuring detail discourages a viewer from nitpicking and finding flaws, or from humanizing the thing that's meant to be scary.

I've seen dozens of people who genuinely read the sources as supporting their position. They're adept at taking individual sentences out of context and ignoring the "In conclusion" summaries that show they should re-interpret how they're taking those sentences. A recent example I had was someone linking a Snopes article to prove Nazis are socialist. The article itself quite definitively states in no uncertain terms that Nazis are not socialists and that they're name was a smokescreen, that party members either had no earthly clue what socialism was or were purposefully twisting the term to hijack the popularity of the movement in Germany. But it had a lot of quotes in it that could be summed up as "Yes comrade, we are the socialists. You can trust us and vote for us to get your socialism" and sentences that correctly stated Nazi was short for "National Socialist" therefore it proved they really are socialists. It didn't matter that the final paragraph literally said "Nazis were not socialists, but pretended to be to gain power" the quotes and name of the party proves he's right.

I'm surprised that Hilary Crowder didn't end up pulling a Susan Wright on Steven. In case you're wondering who Susan Wright is; she is also known as the Blue-eyed Butcher because she tied up her violent and abusive husband Jeff Wright in their bed, stabbed him 193 times, and buried his body in the backyard of their Houston area home in January of 2003. During her trial; lead prosecutor Kelly Siegler reenacted the stabbing of Jeff Wright using the Wrights bed for the reenactment, bloodstained mattress and all! Susan Wright was convicted of First Degree Murder and sentenced to twenty-five years in prison; but her sentence was reduced to twenty years on appeal due to ineffective assistance of counsel. In December of 2020; Susan was released on probation after serving sixteen years of her sentence.

Random side note I always found tipping odd. I've never tipped in my life because my country doesn't tip and we discourage it upon entry. I'm just surprised an entire nation has being gaslit by companies to pay the wages of these staff. I know, I know "but then the worker gets more". Yeah, then you pay significantly more aswell. Doesn't add up. The business should be doing it, all they are doing is taking more of your money to give it to their workers. Edit = Speech to text typos. I'm lazy and I don't proof read
@FatedHandJonathon
@FatedHandJonathon Жыл бұрын
@@-Gax- I think I can shed some light on the story. It started during the Depression, when many establishments were no longer able to maintain their staff. Rather than leave their jobs for an absolutely abysmal job market, it became common practice for servers to take whatever the restaurant could afford to pay, then supplement that by accepting bribes from wealthy patrons to give them preferential treatment. As the economy picked back up, more and more customers fit into the category of wealthy, and they wanted that treatment, too. By the time the Depression was over, it was basically established practice that everyone would bribe the servers at a restaurant in accordance with how well they were served. With this as an accepted tradition, restaurants could afford to continue paying their servers lower rates, even as they no longer needed to. Fast forward to today, and you see the power of tradition. It no longer makes any kind of sense for servers to work for tips, but it’s a holdover practice from a time when it did make sense - and habits like that can be hard to break.

@@FatedHandJonathon I'm certainly not against tipping as an option... But I am definitely against carving exceptions to minimum wage legislation for jobs that are traditionally tipped making certain occupations dependent on tipping in order to make what we've decided is the minimum amount someone should make per hour. (Also most places don't have that minimum amount nearly high enough given the increase in cost of living but that feels like a separate issue to tipping)
@politicallynonbinary
@politicallynonbinary Жыл бұрын
The part that really gets to me is that we have a whole different minimum wage of tipped labor. And it's like 25%ish of the actual minimum which is already about half what it should be. I'm not against tipping (but also is an indoctriated american) if it's a genuine reward for what you see as exceptional service/performance/etc but it should always be a supplement to a proper wage, and not something one must rely on to get by.

Thing is family friendly drag queen entertainers aren't really anything new. In Britain pantomime plays are considered traditional family entertainment and by tradition include a drag queen in the form of a pantomime dame and nobody bats an eye. It came from women not being allowed to preform on stage back in the day. Pantomime dames have been around since 1806 and often pantomimes are full of sexual innuendo to make it entertaining for the adults while there's lots of slapstick humour for the kids. Drag Queens reading storybooks or doing events like in this vid actually seems more tame in comparison lmaoo. A lot of people's concerns about kid friendly drag queen shows seem to come from their own sexualisation of drag queens whereas a kid just sees someone wearing a costume.

I grew up in s much more constricted age, and yet dressing as women and a certain amount of drag was exercised in mainstream media, and i don't recall much backlash or concern, even if it was often the humor was quite derogatory at the expensive of those who are lgbtq, or were deeply misogynistic. I grew up watching things like monty python, Benny Hill, robin williams with roles like mrs doubtfire, saturday night live, in living color, dame edna, tootsie, and on and on, that were for kids or adults, or both, and all had men dressed as women, with most not sexually fetishizing the practice of the drag, but usually had tons of adult humor and often the adult humor was sexual, but normally a humor aimed at being funny to the straight members of the audience, and even more so i believe, to the straight male members. Perhaps the big difference now, that has brought out the outrage, besides media whipping up and fomenting the hate, would be that, it's not always a joke anymore, and is even less done in ways to strictly amuse the straight members of the audience, as well as being a lot less at the expense at lgbqt. It ties it to the feelings of replacement theory - " male entertainers aren't putting on dresses to make me laugh, and I'm not in on the joke, so it's on more situation where me and my worldview isn't the actual center, or at least central concern, of the world. This all make me feel less important, included, and unneeded, or maybe unnecessary, or lost in an ever increasing foreign world; so my loss, confusion, sadness, shall boil up unto anger and hate, and don't care to research these topics, if i can find someone who sounds both intelligent and very sure of their "informed opinion" that matches with my ill formed bias, to just show me where to aim this boiling hatred an anger. This way my ego van feel better sooner than later, by getting this yelling at the enemy, out of my system. To take their information and research and continue to look at all sides and figure out why behind the world and my hurt feelings about it, will make me live with this pressure build for longer and longer, and possibly make me feel worse, so no research on these opinions needed if i get told who to blame" - and this is part of the problem, we need to understand from loud and angry, is that the root is often a personal pain not properly being dealt with

@@khill8645 Came here to second this. One could argue that their very existence is political, and their name is carefully chosen, but their stated purpose is community defense and mutual aid, not engaging in electoral politics. It's just not what they're for. AFAIK, they don't lobby, they don't endorse candidates, and they don't do anything directly related to government or elections. Most of the chapters are focused on enabling marginalized people to use firearms safely and easily (think something like the early Black Panthers) and/or general mutual aid actions like protecting the drag brunch. I think maybe the point was that she was wearing something short, so the people sitting at the table potentially could have seen up the queen's skirt? Not to say that's a legitimate argument because if you look closely it seems like she's wearing some kind of outerwear/possibly leotard thing under there anyway, which shouldn't be construed as a provocative item of clothing to wear. Despite this, Crowder's editing team seems to be hyperfocused on looking at these queen's asses like there's somehow an issue. Or just because they think those queen's butts are sexually provocative, which... I mean, 🥴 for an adult, they might be, those queens are really attractive. Point is, there was nothing wrong with what they wore to the show, no matter what angle you were viewing it from.

It implies a blatant attempt to lie to people for nefarious reasons. The distinction is necessary. Someone who lies because they are just repeating what they heard is not the same as someone intentionally misleading people with lies. This is why there are different categories for manslaughter/murder. Accidentally running over a bicyclist is not the same as getting into your car with the intention of running over a bicyclist out of hate for them.

Ah yes, the solution to a horrific stabbing incident in Canada was guns. If guns were more common in Canada perhaps it would have been a shooting instead... On a less sarcastic note, this was a horrific tragedy and an instance of gross negligence on the part of Canada's Parole Board. It was also a result of how Canada has failed it's Indigenous communities. Dragging American gun debates into it is pretty unwarranted since the conversation should focus more on critically examining Canada's justice system. Steven Crowder's commentary is not welcome here.

A bit embarrassing but back when i was about 12-15 I actually bought crowder. I found the whole "change my mind" videos "eye opening" at the time because he seemed really logical, which in hindsight is obvious because he's ready to go in there with nitpicked facts and argues with people who arent used to that stuff. That very easily turned into me becoming quite polarised just because thats the stuff i was consuming. The only reason i stopped watching his videos and a couple of people similar to him was just because i got bored of trying to keep up with it. Like i still believed in all his bs but then because i inadvertently took a step back i just slowly stopped being polarised. I like to think now that i actually think logically about all my opinions instead of just listening to whoever sounds the best. I dont regret watching crowder as dumb and idiotic i think he is now, i think its an important thing that happened to me.

From fifth/sixth grade to eighth grade, I was a Steven Crowder fan. I would always argue because “debate is cool” and I’d spread some seriously awful shit. It wasn’t my best era. In what I consider my lowest moment of this era, I saw a magazine cover that had a headline about a gay bar being shot up by some religious extremist. I mumbled under my breath “serves them right”. I was a bad person. I only started to see the error in my ways when I was exposed to gay people. You see, in my middle school, I was a social outcast. You know who else were social outcasts? Gays. Yeah. They took me in. They probably shouldn’t have. I was a seriously bad dude. But they saw something In me I guess. It only took a few months to radicalize me, but the de-radicalization took YEARS. Over quarantine, I realized I was queer, and when I came to terms with that side of myself, I was finally able to become a good, more accepting person. That’s my story, though. I got lucky. Some people don’t have the fortune I did. Steven Crowder and his other alt-right homies are dangerous people who say dangerous things, using their platforms to radicalize people and spread hateful messages. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

Don’t know how you got the idea crowder hates gay people. He disapproves of there actions on religious grounds, but gets along fine with them (live and let live). You just replaced your fervor for one ideology( which it sounds like you didn’t understand) with a new ideology.

Steven Crowder first popped up on my radar when he was talking about Emma González; a survivor of the tragedy at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida back in 2018. Steven published an article on his website when Emma admitted during a March For Our Lives rally that she and her classmates stayed away from the gunman Nikolas Cruz. Steven's article was titled "Emma González Admitted to Bullying Nikolas Cruz and she's not Sorry!" Steven went so far as to compare Emma to 90s rock icon Sinéad O'Connor due to the fact that they both have shaved heads and are angry young women. Steven Crowder like many others shamed and belittled the Parkland survivors by claiming that they bullied and mistreated Nikolas Cruz to the point where he snapped and felt the need to lash out at his former classmates. In response to the March For Our Lives movement; a middle school teacher in Virginia established the Walk Up Not Out movement. March For Our Lives focuses on getting tougher gun laws passed as well as calling out federal and state level politicians who accept donations from the NRA. Walk Up Not Out focuses on getting students to be nice to the kids like Nikolas Cruz by emphasizing compassion, kindness and understanding. Parkland survivor Isabelle Robinson dispelled the idea that Nikolas Cruz would not have committed the shooting if the students at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School had been nice to him in an op-ed piece for The New York Times which she titled "I Tried to Befriend Nikolas Cruz, but he Still Killed my Friends."

It's not going to be a worse place for them, at least in the short-term, because they occupy privileged groups. Actually it used to be fairly common in the US as well. Drag was especially popular in the 1940's. The whole dragshows as a guise for pedophiles is actually something that came up mainly as a response to the acceptance of gay marriage. Depicting gay people as pedophiles is very old but overtime this became less and less acceptable. So trans people and drag shows are kind of serving as a substitute for the homophobia they want to say but can't.

As an aside, I appreciate your examinations of the media landscape, as well as specifically criticisng Jon Stewart in the intro. Not because of any “Both Sides” thing, but because it puts the discussion in the right perspective. A lot of KZfaqrs I know, all of whom are intelligent and well-spoken, try to use individual people as jumping off points for greater discussions. This isn’t bad, but whenever I read the comment sections of those videos, I often see people focusing on the flaws of the individual person, not the greater ideas. Big Joel’s dissections of conservative media figures are a notable example, like, the difference in topic between the last thirds of his videos and his comment sections are interesting. And I’m aware that a lot of those comments are just people being witty, but I do think that’s somewhat missing the forest for the trees a but. So, basically, by starting a Crowder-themed conversation by deconstructing Jon Stewart, I have hope that it helps orient people’s perspectives a bit. Sorry if this was rambling or incoherent.
