Songwriter and Performer Spencer Bohren stops by to visit his old pal, Dan Erlewine. Spencer’s Gibson Southern Jumbo guitar plays in tune but it won’t stay in tune. Dan’s got a way to fix that and in return Spencer teaches him how to play “Canned Heat Blues” a 1920’s song by Tommy Johnson.

This is so great! All these years, I've had a patent-pending StewMac dowel maker and didn't even know it. My dad taught me the toothpick trick when I was a kid and I just never gave it a second thought--filling holes with toothpicks, then touching up with paint to match the wood color, faking any grain that might show now seems so crude and amateurish compared to making your own dowel of the correct size and wood. Thank you so very much!

I love that he mentioned Tommy Johnson, and played one of his songs! Tommy Johnson was from my home county, the next town over from me! He was from Copiah County, in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. And there's a Blues Trail marker for him in my hometown of Crystal Springs (which is 10 minutes north of Hazlehurst). Another great blues legend from Copiah County, is Robert Johnson. He was from my hometown of Crystal Springs! 😊 Robert's son, Claude Johnson, opened a small museum in Crystal Springs called the Robert Johnson Blues Museum, taken care of by the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation (which I believe Claude is the founder of). It has some of Robert's guitars, record albums, and paintings and pictures of Robert. Our town is very proud of this! :) And I got to meet Claude once, shortly after the museum first opened. He was really nice! If you ever get a chance to visit Crystal Springs and Hazlehurst, Mississippi, if only for visiting the museum in Crystal Springs, and the music museum in Hazlehurst, do yourself a favor and do it! You'll enjoy it! And don't leave Crystal Springs without getting a homegrown Crystal Springs tomato! Our town proudly holds the title of "The Tomato Capital of the World"! We have the best tasting tomatoes anywhere! Look our town up on Google. And a visit here isn't complete without a stop by Wilson's Meat House for some great fresh sausage, and a yummy ice cream cone from the Dairy Freeze (a small ice cream stand that has been around since the 1950's)! Yes, I'm proud of my hometown and county! There's a TON of history here, with some historical people from here! 😊

@jamesthe-doctor8981
@jamesthe-doctor8981 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, because all of my guitars and basses get treated to some pencil graphite on their nut slots during every string change. It's one of those "luthiers' tricks" that never leaves you once you've heard of it. Secondary tip: get yourself a mechanical drafting pencil at Office Depot, as well as a pointer, along with some 4B or 5B replacement leads. The pointer is what you sharpen the lead with on a drafting pencil, and the higher the number (4B, 5B, etc.,) the softer the lead. Now you can either rub the pencil into the nut slots, or sharpen about half of one lead with the pointer and use the powdered lead inside of your pointer and apply it right onto the nut slots. 2B is the same hardness as a No. 2 pencil lead. 4B is plenty soft enough. 9B is WAY too soft, and the "H" leads are too hard. Have fun staying better in tune!

I always enjoy the vids and tips. So those are 16:1 gear ratio tuners, replacing what are probably 14:1. Personally I've replaced all my old tuners with 18:1 ratio tuners because I really believe the higher ratio helps slippage more than anything. I'm a little surprised gear ratio isn't covered more in the video. I did hear "finer ratio" - but no specifics. But hey, that's just me and what works for me. Thanks again.

Wow! He has a great and original sounding voice; plus he can actually play! So many times, when someone in a video goes to play and sing after fixing or talking about something, he or she is bad. He has a great voice and guitar chops! Sorry to write a paragraph about it, it's just that I am rarely surprised when I see someone sing in a video (even studio cuts). I would love to attend one of his classes Also, funny, the open to that song is def where Berry stole "Maybelline!" Actually makes sense, as it was a popular Forties tune and def would have been in the air around the time that Berry was working to find his chops and style.
