Stickhandling: Why You Shouldn't Slide With Your Bottom Hand

A lot of players let their bottom hand slide up and down their stick while practicing stickhandling. Why? Nobody really knows. Their coach problem told them that that's how it's done. Did the coach explain why? Mostly not, or maybe he said that it's because "the bottom hand needs to stay loose."
There is however a gigantic difference between "loose" and "sliding". Have you ever seen a highlight reel goal in the NHL where the goal scorer slid his hand up and down his stick? I haven't...
In this video I explain why you should mostly NOT be sliding your bottom hand while stickhandling, and where, in special situations, sliding may be of help to you.
I'm tired of hearing: "slide your bottom hand", when it hardly ever occurs in a game.
It's time to start stickhandling like you're in 2023, not 1990!

I applaud critically reexamining techniques to move the game forward and I agree with you. I think it is beneficial to practice bottom hand sliding to practice awareness, that the stick isn't glued to your hands and to train the top hand. One area that you didn't mention specifically is receiving pucks close to your feet. You can either use your feet to receive the puck or slide down the bottom hand for help. I find for one timers and chips it also helps to move my lower hand down. Thank you for your videos.

Thank you! Yes for awareness sometimes, it’s definitely ok. For training the top hand I would just do drills with only one hand on the stick. Yes taking passes close to the feet I forgot👍I would slide and go into a hip-opener to take those. The hip-opener allows the stick to be brought further back.

@@MarcelsHockeySchool I would love to see one or multiple videos on that topic. How to receive and control "bad" passes. Feet, air, behind etc

Love all the videos Marcel! Watched one in English and realized you did them in German also. I moved to the US from Germany and enjoy the videos in both languages.

Thanks all lot! Yeah I used to do them all in German, now I usually switch up each video. In the summer probably more English videos because my inline skating videos have a more worldwide reach than my hockey ones.

I have a brother that lives there in Landsberg. He left our home town of Hof to go to school in Fussen and now lives there. Maybe one day we will run into each other either in the US or in Germany. Keep up the good work!!!!

I think that sliding the bottom hand is taught particularly at the mite levels, because those novice players are generally gripping their sticks primarily with their bottom hand rather than their top hand (especially if they were taught to hold a baseball bat before they were taught to hold a hockey stick). As you point out, advanced players figure out, that the hand sliding is not generally natural nor effective.

Yeah I agree, and with those kids gripping their sticks like they’re trying to crush it, it’s maybe ok. What annoys me is the generic approach, also in a lot of tutorial videos, where everyone is sliding. I never tell the kids I coach to slide, but I do make sure that they stay loose.

Connor Bedard is known for his brutal "Toe Drag release" (Coach Chippy voice). But I am not sure if he is moving his bottom hand or not... Connor Bedard ist für seinen "Toe Drag release" bekannt in der NHL, ich weiss aber nicht ob er eine untere Hand bewegt oder nicht.

Auston Matthews was one of the guys who made that release super popular before Bedard. He doesn’t slide. You simply can’t slide while doing it because you wasn’t have enough strength while doing it.
